The Fifth Phrase: Strength in the Face of Oppression

“The persecution of Falun Gong, the most horrendous persecution against millions of innocent practitioners in China, has been ongoing for 12 years. In this darkest decade in Chinese civilization, the Chinese Communist regime campaigned to persecute, intimidate, imprison, and torture practitioners with means that are unheard of in human history. The live organ harvesting, reported and substantiated by international community, further attests to the evil nature of the persecution.”

This is one paragraph of the proclamation issued by the Atlanta City Council, in which they proclaimed the 13^th day of May 2011, as World Falun Dafa Day in the City of Atlanta.

On June 10, 1999, under the despotic direction of Jiang Zemin, the 610 Office, an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems, was established in China. Beginning on July 20, 1999, Jiang Zemin ordered the 610 Office to start a systematic persecution of hundreds of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners who remained resolute in their belief, implementing Jiang's genocidal policies against Falun Gong practitioners: "Destroy their reputations completely, ruin them financially, and eradicate them physically" and "the death of Falun Gong practitioners from beating is nothing and shall be counted as suicide; the body shall be directly cremated without investigating the person's identity."

In international society, the communist regime claimed that it had reduced the use of torture in prisons, and it “invited” reporters from overseas media to visit the detention centers in China, which were touted as maintaining “very civilized environments.” At the same time however, more and more persecution accounts were exposed and published on the Clearwisdom website. As revealed in these reports, the regime has been extremely ruthless in its persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

The torture methods used include:

• deprivation of sleep for many days
• shocking with multiple high-voltage electric batons at the same time (the body parts shocked include mouth, head, face, chest, breasts, as well as other private parts, and other parts of the body)
• various kinds of handcuffs and shackles to be worn and also used to suspend the victim
• different kinds of sticks, clubs, and whips including rubber clubs, spiked sticks, leather whips, copper wire whips, steel bars, etc.
• hammering bamboo sticks and metal nails into the practitioners' fingers so deeply that they touch bone; pinching the practitioners' flesh with pliers
• force-feeding pepper liquid, concentrated salt water, and feces through a large-diameter plastic tube
• pouring cold water all over the practitioners during the winter; stripping them of their clothes and throwing them outside in winter
• forcing them to stand exposed to the sun in the heat of summer
• burning them with heated iron rods
• denial of restroom use
• injection of various drugs to attack the nervous system
• etc.

Methods of torture used on Falun Gong practitioners

The deaths of 3433 Falun Gong practitioners have so far been documented in the CCP's campaign of persecution. In addition, more than 6000 practitioners have been illegally sentenced to prison, more than 100,000 practitioners have been put into forced labor camps, several thousand practitioners have been sent to mental hospitals and injected with psychotropic drugs, countless practitioners have been locked up in brainwashing centers and subjected to mental torture, and countless practitioners have suffered beatings, physical punishment, and extortion at the hands of the authorities. In addition, the number of practitioners whose organs have been harvested by the regime is still unknown. Millions of practitioners' family members, relatives, friends, and colleagues have been implicated and brainwashed to varying extents by the communist regime.

The Sixth Phrase: Commendations and Best Wishes

In the past 12 years, practitioners have constantly and peacefully explained the truth to the world's people, bringing the beauty of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance to almost every corner of the world. In return, people have shown their support for human rights and justice by their actions.

In September 2006, the European Parliament passed a resolution condemning the persecution of Falun Gong, making particular mention of torture, detention, and imprisonment. It was especially concerned about the organ harvesting of detained practitioners. The European Parliament demanded that the Chinese government immediately stop the persecution of Falun Gong and release all detained Falun Gong practitioners.

Prior to the 60^th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (CIPFG) asked the United Nations to take effective action to stop the Chinese Communist Party's persecution of Falun Gong. Political leaders, including members of Congress, state and local council members, county magistrates, and city mayors from 18 countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, jointly wrote to the president of the UN Human Rights Council and UN Secretary-General to express their support for the global "Millions of Signatures" campaign launched by CIPFG and to call on the UN and the international community to take effective actions to stop the Chinese Communist Party's persecution of Falun Gong.

In addition, the Australian Senate Passed Motion No. 127 on the afternoon of June 24, 2008, urging the Communist regime to stop the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

House Resolution 605 passed by a vote of 412 to 1 in the U.S. House of Representatives on March 16, 2010. With this resolution, representatives expressed their empathy with Falun Gong practitioners and their family members who have been subjected to the Chinese Communist regime's continued persecution for the past decade, solely for remaining steadfast in their personal belief. The resolution called for an immediate end to the regime's campaign to persecute, intimidate, imprison, and torture Falun Gong practitioners, and to release all imprisoned practitioners.

On November 29, the Spanish court ruled to indict five high-ranking Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials for their roles in crimes of torture and genocide committed against Falun Gong practitioners. Among the defendants are former CCP head Jiang Zemin, widely acknowledged as the chief instigator of the campaign to “eradicate” the spiritual practice. Other accused officials include Luo Gan, the head of the 610 Office; Bo Xilai, current Party secretary for Chongqing and former Minister of Commerce; Jia Qinglin, the fourth-highest member of the Party hierarchy; and Wu Guanzheng, head of an internal Party disciplinary committee.

Since 2002, 36 CCP officials have been charged with persecuting Falun Gong in overseas courts. In addition to Bo Xilai, former Beijing mayor Liu Qi, former Liaoning Province deputy governor Xia Deren, Hubei Province Public Security Bureau deputy director and Hubei 610 Office head Zhao Zhifei, and former deputy Consul general of the Chinese Consulate in Toronto Pan Xinchun were found guilty for their roles in instigating and carrying out the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

In the past, some lawyers considered the persecution accounts of Falun Gong practitioners to be sensitive cases and thus avoided defending them. But as the truth is spread more and more widely, many Chinese lawyers have dared to stand up, defend Falun Gong practitioners, and uphold justice.

In November 2006, the book Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party was published. As of May 2011, more than 9400 millions Chinese people have withdrawn from the CCP and its affiliated organizations after understanding the evil nature of the CCP.

During the meeting of the New York State Assembly on May 10, 2011, Eric Stevenson, New York State Assembly member, read a proclamation recognizing May 2011 as Falun Dafa Month in the State of New York and to recognize the twelfth annual World Falun Dafa Day celebration on May 13, 2011. He also invited Falun Gong practitioners to attend the meeting and accept the proclamation. In the assembly hall, members of State Assembly applauded them warmly.

Mr. Stevenson affirmed that he felt that good will always prevail over evil. He said he was sorry to hear that the persecution is still going on for those who practice such a peaceful movement, and he expressed his wish that the persecution will soon end. He hopes that practitioners will be allowed to practice and live in peace and respect.

Conclusion

The brutality of the CCP sharply contrasts with Falun Gong practitioners' compassionate and peaceful hearts. In the past years, the proclamations given to commemorate World Falun Dafa Day have witnessed both the beauty of Falun Gong and also the brutal persecution the practitioners have suffered. We hope more and more people can understand the truth of Falun Gong and that the words “brutal persecution” never appear in proclamations again.
