Teacher Mr. Ding Guoying Becomes Mentally Disordered As a Result of Imprisonment

February 09, 2008 |

(Clearwisdom.net) Mr. Ding Guoying was a primary school teacher in Xingyang City, Henan Province. Since he was released from the Xinmi Prison in October of 2007, he has not spoken a word, shown any facial expression, or been able to take care of himself.

Mr. Ding Guoying was arrested in June 2002 for advocating "Truthfulness, Compassion,Forbearance" in his school classroom. Five months later, in November 2002, he was secretly sentenced to seven years in prison and taken to Xinmi Prison.

In the winter of 2002, Mr. Ding's mother visited him in prison. This is the coldest season of the year, and she saw her son wearing only thin clothes. Mr. Ding did not recognize his mother. During her visit, Mr. Ding did not speak or look at her, and in subsequent visits, she did not see any improvement in his behavior. The family asked to take Mr. Ding to see a doctor on multiple occasions, but the administrators of Xinmi Prison denied their requests.

On June 5, 2006, two division directors from Xinmi Prison, Liu (male, first name unknown) and Pei (male, first name unknown), paid surprise visits to Mr. Ding's family, the village committee, the school where Mr. Ding Guoying used to work, and to the village education office. Wherever they went, people told them, "Guoying is a good person and a great teacher." They told Mr. Ding's mother that he was diagnosed with a mental disorder, and they were considering releasing him on bail for health reasons. They told the family that it might take one to two months, depending on the family's cooperation. These prison administrators asked the family to give a statement, stating that the family had a history of mental illness. They said, cunningly, that the sooner they got the statement, the sooner Mr. Ding would be released. Mr. Ding's mother rejected their crafty attempt, saying, "I am a practitioner. I only speak the truth. The family has no history of mental illness. Guoying did not have mental illness before he was imprisoned. Guoying wouldn't have been admitted to college if he had mental illness."

Finally, on October 14, 2007, Mr. Ding's family was told to pick him up from the prison. For the first two weeks after he got home, Mr. Ding did not eat or drink, and he did not show any facial expression. The family borrowed money and took him to a hospital. He stayed there and underwent intravenous medications until all their money was used up.

Mr. Ding is not able to take care of himself. One day, his mother brought him a bowl of rice gruel. She asked him to eat and repeated this request several times. He did not respond at first. Then he suddenly got up and poured the hot gruel on top of his own head. On the morning of December 4, 2007, Mr. Ding's mother saw her son pouring the urine from a chamberpot onto his head. She cried out for him to stop, but he did not heed her words.

A well-known and respected teacher, formerly a normal and healthy person, became mentally disordered as a result of persecution, just because he believed in "Truthfulness,Compassion, Forbearance." This is a real and very sad story, which happened during "the best time for human rights in China" and the so called "harmonious society" as claimed by the Chinese Communist Party.
