EFGIC: A Call for Justice at EU-China Summit

September 10, 2006 |

Press Statement - Sep 9, 2006 European Falun Gong Information Centre

Helsinki (EFGIC) - Two months ago, an investigative report was published by David Kilgour, former Canadian Secretary of State, and David Matas, a renowned international human rights lawyer. This report concludes that organ harvesting is widespread on live Falun Gong practitioners in China.

In the wake of the EU-China Summit in Helsinki, MEP's such as Simon Coveney, Charles Tannock, and Edward McMillan-Scott have co-signed a letter to the European Commission, expressing their concerns on this serious human rights violation. They urge the EU Commission to look into this matter and raise the issue during the Summit. (link to report).

One of the main actors in this horror is Bo Xilai, Minister of Commerce and former Governor of Liaoning Province. Worse still, Bo is scheduled to arrive in Helsinki as part of the Chinese delegation to this ASEM. During Bo's tenure in Liaoning Province, the persecution of Falun Gong was among the harshest of the entire country. According to witnesses, the Sujiatun Hospital in Liaoning province was one of the major centers in harvesting kidneys and corneas from Falun Gong practitioners while Bo was the Governor. As a reward for his "contributions", the then-president Jiang Zemin promoted Bo to the position of Minister of Commerce. Falun Dafa Association in Finland filed an official request upon the Finnish leaders to bar the entry of Bo to Helsinki, Finland, and charged Bo with the crime of genocide, according to Finnish criminal law, for the criminal acts he has committed against Falun Gong practitioners inside China.

During the EU-China Summit and ASEM meeting, Falun Gong practitioners and its supporters will stage peaceful rallies to call upon China to stop this inhumane practice of organ harvesting, as well as the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. The EU leaders should take this opportunity of the ASEM summit to address this issue and help stop this modern-day atrocity. History will not look kindly at those who choose to be silent when another Holocaust-like crime is taking place. History will not only remember what we do today, but more significantly what we have not when we could. We appeal to all kind-hearted people to help us end Beijing’s persecution against Falun Gong.
