Thank you for helping to highlight the plight of Falun Gong practitioners in
China in your article "Chinese torture protest" (News, August 10).
As the China's People's Liberation Army is already here we used banners in the
"Stop the torture" parade to appeal to bring Jiang Zemin, head of the
PLA and former leader of China, to justice and not to "protest against the
visit by members of the Chinese Army to this year's Tattoo".
Few know that its leader is instigating many crimes against people who practice
Falun Gong. We highlighted just a few of the methods used to break people's
belief in the principles of truthfulness, compassion and tolerance promoted in
Falun Gong.
People in the PLA have been threatened that anyone practicing Falun Gong, and
many were before the crackdown in July 1999, can be executed without having to
tell the authorities, and so they are victims too.
The verified death toll from persecution has risen from 960, as reported, to
currently 1022 in just three months!
It is worrying what effect ignoring such crimes with the aim of "reaching
out a hand of friendship" will have."
