President Bush will be hosting China's leader, Jiang Zemin, at his ranch later
this week. Jiang's regime wants us to believe that China is serious about
cooperating with our government against terrorism and that it supports human
rights, but its policies distinctly indicate otherwise.
The transgressions of Jiang are legion, including his crimes against humanity,
which are documented by well-known human rights groups. He has moved from
implementing state-run terrorism through the brutal suppression of many
spiritual groups in his own country to terrorizing Americans here for their
beliefs.
In July, the House passed Concurrent Resolution 188 addressing the Chinese
regime's attempts to interfere directly with the fundamental rights of U.S.
citizens in our country who practice or support the peaceful meditation practice
called Falun Gong.
Since Falun Gong gained popularity here, a large number of U.S. citizens and
residents who practice and support it have been targets of hate crimes, to the
extent that they have filed lawsuits. I applaud them for standing up to Jiang's
illegal acts, thereby safeguarding the freedoms and liberties of all Americans.
What this totalitarian regime doesn't get is that Americans value individual
choice, especially regarding matters of faith. Any seed of terrorism here in the
United States should not be allowed to propagate in any form.
