As early as before July 20th, Falun Gong practitioners had already been harassed, wiretapped, tailed. However, the situation became extremely severe after July 20th and the persecution towards Falun Gong was escalated as shown in the records below.
Some Falun Gong practitioners have been sent to hospitals for mental illnesses. The police do even inform their family members. It was said that some had even been injected with medicines that would result in amyotrophy (muscle damage). As a consequence, after they are released, they will look like mentally ill patients even though they are not. Or more seriously they will have to stay in bed forever.
January 1st, 2000, Beijing
At the beginning of December 1999, Cheng-guan police station in Fan-shan District of Beijing arrested more than 50 Falun Gong practitioners who were determined about their beliefs on all kinds of excuses. Later, the police station sent all of them to a local hospital for mental patients on the excuse of preventing Falun Gong practitioners from going to appeal during the period of Macao' return.
