Mr. Lin Zehua was sentenced to one year of forced labor in 2001 for his belief in Falun Gong. In September 2002, he was sentenced to three years of forced labor but was released on bail after three months in a detention center. In February 2004, Mr. Lin was sentenced to three years of forced labor in Anshan City, Liaoning Province. This time, he was held in Haicheng City Detention Center for three months and in Anshan City Forced Labor Camp for three months before he was released for medical treatment.
On September 12, 2007, Lin Zehua was arrested by Shuangyashan City State Security Bureau. During the arrest, the police hit and kicked him in the head. At midnight, Mr. Lin was taken to Youyi Detention Center, where he was detained for almost seven months. During that time, Director Cai Yongde (male) took him to Youyi County Hospital to be force-fed.
On April 10, 2008, Mr. Lin was taken to the "intensive drill" ward of Qitaihe Prison, where inmate Liang Guangcheng forced him to stand and walk in military formats for a long time.
On July 10, 2008, he was transferred to Jiamusi City Prison. At the time, due to the abuse he had already been subjected to, Mr. Lin was quite weak. Although he could still take care of himself, he could barely walk was not able to do physical labor. He was assigned to the 2nd Section of the 5th Ward. As soon as he arrived, he was pressured to write statements to give up Falun Gong. He refused.
To exert more pressure on Mr. Lin, Section Director Lai Baohua (male) and Political Instructor Wang Lianyu placed him under strict monitoring--no phone calls to family members or family visits. After September 7, 2008, they no longer allowed him to buy daily necessities.
On October 16, 2008, Lai Baohua assigned inmate Li Yansong (male) as Mr. Lin's personal monitor, and restricted others from contacting or helping Mr. Lin. Mr. Lin had difficulty walking but was forced to walk to the prison's labor shop.
From October 17 to November 6, 2008, Mr. Lin worked in the labor shop daily. It took him 45 to 50 minutes to walk 500 meters (about 0.3 miles). On the morning of November 7, 2008, Li Yansong dragged Mr. Lin because he was moving slowly. Mr. Lin was thrown on the floor of the hallway. After hearing what happened, Lai Baohua came and asked, "Are you ready to write the Three Statements? What's the big deal? Once you write it, you can whatever you want. No one will restrict you."
Mr. Lin replied no.
Lai said, "Then you have to do the labor everyday."
Mr. Lin moved another 50 meters along a wall, then he stopped, because he could not walk any further.
Since then, Mr. Lin has no longer been able to move his legs. Once he lay down, he could not sit up or roll over. Lai Baohua ordered Li Yansong to threaten Mr. Lin, saying that if he did not write the statements, they wouldn't send anyone to help him.
After his frequent requests, Mr. Lin was finally taken to the prison hospital in December 2008. Although he was paralyzed and could not take care of himself, the prison doctor had the audacity to say, "He is all right, nothing usual."
Later, Li Zehua's family paid for him to be examined at an outside hospital. But the Ward Deputy Political Instructor Wei Mengjun did not allow any of his family members to be present during the exam. He refused to disclose the hospital's diagnosis to his family, but claimed that the doctor did not find anything wrong. Despite there being no "diagnosis," Mr. Lin was paralyzed. The guards accused Mr. Lin of pretending and denied him any medical treatment or special care.
Before he was transferred to Jiamusi Prison, although Mr. Lin had difficulty walking, he still could take care of himself. But when the prison forced him to work in the workshop, within just 20 days, he was paralyzed.
