Ms. Kang Ruiqi was a journalist with a keen mind. After she was arrested last year and injected with unknown drugs in a forced labor camp, she became mentally disordered. She does not recognized her family or friends. She is no longer literate and she does not remember her home. Most of the time, she stares blankly off into space, smiles without any awareness of her surroundings, or utters nonsense.

Ms. Kang, 60, lives in Xipai Community on Pozi Street, Changsha City, Hunan Province. She is retired from Changsha City Household Appliance Company and was also a reporter. After she started practicing Falun Gong in April 1996, her leukemia disappeared.

During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, agents from the local 610 Office, Pozi Police Station, and the community committee arrested Ms. Kang and subjected her to 18 months of forced labor. She was in Baimalong Forced Labor Camp. Because she refused to be "transformed", guards in the forced labor camp secretly injected her with unknown drugs. As a result, she became mentally disoriented.

Ms. Kang lives alone. After she became mentally affected and was released from the forced labor camp, the communist party members at the local 610 Office, police station, and community committee would not allow her family or friends to take her in to care for her. Instead, they hired people to keep Ms. Kang under surveillance.

Prior to 2008, Ms. Kang had been arrested twice for her belief in Falun Gong. In 2002, she was sentenced to four and a half years in prison and in 2006 she was subjected to a year of forced labor in Baimalong Forced Labor Camp.
