Ms. Liu Yumin's husband Mr. Wu Yanshui died on May 20, 2001 as a result of persecution. Immediately after his death, authorities from the Laishui county government demolished her house to widen Dongda Street.
With the house demolished, Ms. Liu Yumin and her two young children became homeless, having to go from one place to another.
During these desperate times, policemen from Laishui County Police Department in Hebei Province, with policeman Dai Chunjie as their leader, hunted for Ms. Liu and her two children everywhere. One night in 2002, the police climbed the wall, crossed the courtyard, pried a window open and broke into the temporary housing of Ms. Liu and the children. Ms. Liu Yumin didn't even have time to put on her shoes when the police broke in and arrested her. Her little girl wailed and screamed in protest, but the police grabbed her and shouted, "If you scream one more time, we will take you too!"
Their father died because of torture and their mother was now arrested. The little boy and girl had to quit school and find jobs. The boy was hired at a store in Beijing. When the police from Laishui County Police Department found out about it, they pressured the store owner to fire the young boy. The owner complied and fired him. Now the boy had no income. The girl worked in a hair salon, but the police found out about that too. They often went to harass the girl at the hair salon, putting her under a lot of pressure. Since the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) persecution Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, the two children have been living in fear. For seven years, the young girl has been reluctant to go home. She was afraid of sleeping alone at home. She was frightened when she heard someone knocking on the door. She was also frightened to see any car parked in front of her home.
On July 26, 2006, Ms. Liu Yumin, who had only recently returned home, was arrested by policeman Dai Chunjie from Laishui County Police Department's Political Security Section, head of the local "610" Office Wang Fucai, and a group of policemen.
1. Ms. Liu Yumin Was at Death's Door After the First Round of Torture
Ms. Liu Yumin was a schoolteacher in Dongguan Village, Laishui County. She won the Excellent Teacher of the Year award several times and was well known as a virtuous wife and nurturing mother. After getting into middle age, she suffered from headaches, insomnia, cerebral ischemia [lack of oxygen to the brain], stomach disease, arthritis and heart disease. She sought medical treatment everywhere, but nothing helped. On her worst days, she collapsed and went into shock. Her ailments prevented her from holding down a job. In 1996, she started practicing Falun Gong. As she continued to study Falun Gong's teachings, practice the Falun Gong exercises and live by Falun Gong's principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance, all the ailments were cured without any medical treatment. Falun Gong gave her a new lease on life. She went back to school and worked very diligently. Her family, upon seeing this, also began to practice Falun Gong. The entire family was living a happy life.
Since July 20, 1999, the CCP and Jiang Zemin have been madly persecuting Falun Gong and Falun Gong practitioners. In April 2000, policeman Dai Chunjie arrested Ms. Liu Yumin because she persisted in practicing the Falun Gong exercises on a public square. She was illegally imprisoned in the Laishui County Detention Center. On April 7, 2000, she was transferred to a large forced brainwashing center in the Laishui County CCP School. The center was operated by Mr. Sun Guijie, Mr. Zhang Haili, Mr. Liu Yaohua, Mr. Li Zenglin, Mr. Dai Chunjie, as well as the local Procuratorate and People's Court. Mr. Cui Jikun used to be Deputy Head of the Laishui County People's Court. Cui Jikun ordered policemen to tie her up. Cui Jikun stood with his hands on his waist and stared fiercely at Ms. Liu Yumin. He shouted, "Will you practice Falun Gong?" Ms. Liu replied, "I will." Cui Jikun slapped her and shouted in rage, "Drag her to the basement! I don't believe I cannot make you renounce Falun Gong."
They dragged Ms. Liu Yumin to an old basement and forced her to kneel down. They tied her arms behind her back with a length of rope and pulled it upwards. In the past, many Falun Gong practitioners' arms were fractured or became permanently paralyzed as a result of this torture. The pain was excruciating and the torture usually lasted many hours or days. This went on from noon to about 8:00 p.m. Finally her arms were released. She was brought upstairs and thrown on a long bench. She looked frighteningly pale. Her hair was disheveled and covered with dust. Her eyes were tightly shut. Her lips were dry, cracked and bleeding.
Because Ms. Liu went into a state of semi-consciousness for a sustained period of time, Sun Guijie and other policemen released her after extorting 2,200 yuan from her family. After a few months, there were still dark purple bruises on her hip and thighs and the severely bruised skin was as tight as a drum.
2. Her Husband Mr. Wu Yanshui Tortured to Death
Ms. Liu Yumin's husband Mr. Wu Yanshui was also a Falun Gong practitioner. Because he refused to give up practicing Falun Gong, Dongguan Village Mayor Mr. Wu Shangrong, Deputy Town Mayor Mr. Wang Jinlong and Deputy Secretary Mr. Meng Xiaochun summoned Mr. Wu Yanshi to the town offices under false pretenses. They imprisoned Mr. Wu on September 28, 2000. After extorting 2,000 yuan from him, they transferred him to a detention center. On December 27, 2000, they hung signs on Mr. Wu Yanshui's front and back and paraded him through the streets to insult and humiliate him. Next he was transferred to another detention center. There he suffered psychological torture, physical abuse and long hours of forced labor. He was on the verge of physical and mental collapse.
Mr. Wu Yanshui
Mr. Wu Yanshui was a tall and well-built man. After four months of torture, he became very ill. Under the circumstances, Ms. Liu Yumin repeatedly went to the police department, demanding them to release her husband immediately for medical treatment. But Dai Chunjie told her, "I am about to transfer him to a forced labor camp." Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee Mr. Sun Guijie said, "We don't release Falun Gong practitioners like him for any reason." Secretary of the Political and Legal Committee Mr. Liu Yaohua even demanded a 20,000-yuan ransom.
Mr. Wu Yanshui's physical condition worsened. On March 30, 2001, the police saw that Mr. Wu was really dying, so they finally agreed to release him. However, they extorted 5,000 yuan as a fine before the release. Wu Yanshui had lost the ability to walk. His entire body was swollen. His legs were numb and paralyzed. He could no longer see. He couldn't eat and his heart was failing. He also suffered incontinence. Although Mr. Wu Yanshui was released, they did not stop the persecution. The police from the township government and the village committee often broke into Wu's family's home and harassed them. Mr. Wu Yanshui died on May 20, 2001. His little girl kept pulling on the doctor's hand and cried. "Please save my daddy! I am still a child. I can't live without my daddy!"
3. Their House Was Demolished; Ms. Liu Yumin Was at Death's Door Repeatedly As a Result of Torture
After Mr. Wu Yanshui's death, Laishui County began to widen the roads and demolished his home.
Although Mr. Wu Yanshui's wife and children had become homeless, Laishui County Police Department, Laishui County Education Bureau, and the Laishui Town Education Committee did not stop their persecution against Ms. Liu Yumin. Instead, they escalated their persecution. They arrested her at her temporary residence without any valid legal cause or a warrant. They climbed the wall and jumped into the house from a window they had broken. When they took away Ms. Liu Yumin from her two young children, they didn't give her a chance to even properly dress. She was taken away barefoot and in her underwear in the middle of the night. The two young children were alone with no one to look after or provide for them. They didn't release her until she was dying. She was so emaciated that even close acquaintances couldn't recognize her.
Such an illegal arrest, imprisonment and torture took place a few times after Ms. Liu Yumin's husband passed away. Each time they didn't release her until she was dying. After Ms. Liu Yumin was released in July 2003, she still had to lean on another person when she walked. But shortly after her release, her daughter told her secretly that there were people watching her outside her home. She had no choice but to become homeless again, and went into hiding to avoid further persecution.
While she was away, her children suffered much harassment. The police often went to their home and harassed the children. The police would climb the wall, cross the courtyard, pry open a window and enter the house. The police ransacked their home and scattered their clothes and personal belongings around and even in the courtyard. The police claimed they were looking for the entrance of the basement, if there actually was one. The police would put the boy's arms behind his back and press his body against the ground to prevent him from talking or moving. With no one providing for them, the two children had no choice but to try to find a job. After the police knew about their jobs, the police went to the children's workplaces to ask for their mother's whereabouts. The boy's boss fired him due to pressure from the police.
Their relatives also suffered from the police's threats. Thugs from the eduction committee and local police's Political and Security Section threatened to have Ms. Liu Yumin's niece fired from her work if she did not try to locate Ms. Liu Yumin. The niece gave in to the police's threat and went to many relatives' homes to look for Ms. Liu Yumin. The police tapped into all of Ms. Liu Yumin's close relatives' telephones and contacted all the relatives she had approached. The police also broke into Ms. Liu Yumin's two younger sisters' homes, putting them under a lot of pressure and refusing to let them live in peace.
4. Ms. Liu Yumin Arrested and Imprisoned Again
At around 1:00 p.m. of July 26, 2006, about a dozen plainclothes policemen pried open the door of Ms. Liu Yumin's home. They looted a notebook computer and Falun Gong truth-clarification flyers. Dai Chunjie from the Political Security Section and Wang Fucai from the 610 Office hurried to the scene to arrest Ms. Liu Yumin. She had just returned home to her children after having been on the run from the police. Unfortunately, she fell again into the hands of the police. Mr. Zhao Xiliang and Ms. Cao Xiaoling were also arrested. On July 27, 2006, Mr. Zhao Xiliang's wife Ms. Liu Jinhua and her two granddaughters went to ask the police to release Mr. Zhao Xiliang, but the police beat them and detained them for 15, 6 and 7 days respectively. More details are yet to be collected.
Ms. Liu Yumin is now imprisoned in Laishui County Detention Center.
Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Yan Zhiqiang was a teacher at Miuying High School, Li County, Hebei Province since July, 2000. He achieved a high position, was genuine and kindhearted and was praised by the school community. However there were many reports slandering Falun Gong on TV and in newspapers at the time, which had a bad effect on his students. He did not want the kids to be misled and poisoned so he told the students in his class the truth about Falun Gong, such as how it instructs people to be kindhearted and how it improves people's health, and that Falun Gong practitioners are being cruelly persecuted. After hearing the truth, some students shed tears and their benevolent nature was enlightened.
One week later, due to orders from the Disciplinary Secretary of Li County Education Bureau, Yan Zhiqiang was arrested by Chen Guixing and other policemen from Li County Police Department. Yan Zhiqiang was held in the detention center for over fifty days and experienced all kinds of abuse. Zhu Guoyu even notified all the schools in Li County that Yan Zhiqiang had been talking about Falun Gong to students. Because Zhu Guoyu pressed hard, Yan Zhiqiang was sent to Baoding Labor Camp for a three year term beginning in May 2001.
In the labor camp, Yan Zhiqiang was punished, beaten, and deprived of sleep. After sixteen months of detention, he was released. When he saw his mother, he found his mother's hair had turned half white. His father also had become ill from worrying about him. His father was struggling and on the verge of death.
After coming home, Yan Zhiqiang went to the 610 Office several times and tried to recover his job. The director of the 610 Office, Zhang Chunliang, kept refusing. When the head of the Education Bureau, Li Zhiyong (who has now left the post), heard that Yan's father was sick, not only did he give no sympathy, but he also said fiercely, "It serves him right!" Yan Zhiqiang has appealed to the government and the Education Bureau dozens of times. At one time he just saw a glimmer of hope when the 610 Office issued an order restoring his job, however the secretary of the Education Bureau Zhu Guoyu abused his authority and refused to carry out the order. Yan Zhiqiang has still not got his job back.
The continuous persecution caused Yan Zhiqiang to suffer a great
loss to his
reputation, his mental state and his finances. He is currently in his
thirties,
but he cannot get married and it is very difficult to find a job. He
also still
needs to tend to his older parents. He is a teacher admired by his
students and
respected by his colleagues. However he has been persecuted to such a
degree
because he believes in Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance, and
"clarifies the truth" to people. This is the result of persecution
originating with Jiang Zemin, Zhang Chunliang, Zhu Guoyu, Li Yongzhong
and Chen
Guixing, and others in the powerful Jiang clique.
On May 14, 2006, four Falun Gong practitioners, Chuai Cuijun, Zhang Guilan, Chen Baihe and Wang Xiuhua and a driver, Liu Yunjiang, were reported to authorities by villagers who did not know the truth about Falun Gong, in Yuhuzhai Village, Qianxi County. Village policemen and those from the National Security Team in Qianxi Police Station, arrested these five people. Chuai Cuijun, Zhang Guilan, Chen Baihe and Wang Xiuhua were illegally tried. Chuai Cuijun and Chen Baihe are still being detained in the detention center. The other three were granted bail and await trial.
In the following two and a half months, the 610 Office in Qianxi County, along with politicians and legal system officials, threatened and interrogated the practitioners. They fabricated false testimonies, accused them of various things, and publicly tried Chuai Cuijun, Zhang Guilan, Chen Baihe and Wang Xiuhua. These practitioners were threatened with jail sentences and forced labor.
In the detention center, these five people had blood forcibly drawn from them and were photographed. The following accounts reveal the persecution of the Falun Gong practitioners:1. Chuai Cuijun was held down and had blood drawn. She was photographed in a handcuffed and shackled position. Chuai Cuijun went on a hunger strike to protest the detention. She was force-fed twice with dense brine, which the policemen said was soy milk. It is very agonizing to be fed brine when on a hunger strike. She was handcuffed and shackled for two weeks (only criminals awaiting execution are treated in this manner).
As a result of the inhuman physical and mental torture, Chuai Cuijun appeared to be seriously ill. On the afternoon of June 17, the diagnosis of Chuai Cuijun by the surgery section of the herbalist hospital (the herbalist hospital of Qianxi County has her case history) revealed kidney stones. Before this, she had experienced headaches and developed cold sweat all over the body. The policeman Li Yuantie, who took her to the hospital, did not leave her there for the treatment, but took her back to the detention center. He told another policeman that Chuai Cuijun was pretending to be in this state and said that even an actual illness would not secure her release. The people in the detention center saw that Chuai Cuijun could not bear the pain, so they injected her daily to alleviate her pain. They did not give her any medical treatment. The family members of Chuai Cuijun asked several times to meet Chuai Cuijun, but were all rejected with no reason. Chuai Cuijun's mother has been suffering from diabetes and heart diseases. She missed her daughter so much that she went to meet the deputy chief of the police station, Wang Youping, to try and meet with her daughter. Wang did not allow that, but called in the policemen from the National Security Section and intended to detain the elderly lady. This surprised and frightened her. Her diabetes and heart attacks then relapsed and she had to stay in bed. Chuai Cuijun is still in detention and her condition is unknown. Many are worried about her.
Hao Haitao of the prosecution section of the Qianxi Head Prosecutor's office said that Chuai Cuijun struggled in the detention center. Regardless whether there's any evidence, they will still sentence her to at least three years. He also said that there were political ramifications and asked others not to get involved in this matter.2. Zhang Guilan is the wife of Chen Baihe. Their two children were studying out of town. Zhang Guilan suffered from a lack of blood supply to the brain because of the intense persecution. Being light-headed, she was unable to eat or walk. This lasted for about seven or eight days. The policemen were afraid that she would die in the detention center, so they released her. However after this, the policemen still did not leave her alone but continued to instigate, threaten and lie to her relatives, who did not know the truth about Falun Gong. This was to force her to make a false testimony in getting Chen Baihe released. This coercion caused her illnesses to worsen and she was sent to a hospital for a transfusion. Chen Baihe is still being detained in the detention center.
3. Wang Xiuhua is without a job and provides daycare service to make a living. The children and their parents all trust her very much. After she was arrested on May 14, the Qianxi Politics and Law Committee closed her day-care, ignoring the pleas from the parents.
4. The policemen from Qianxi Chengguan Police Station slapped the mouth of the driver Liu Yunjiang many times when he was arrested in order to extract a "confession." They also contorted his arms behind his back, cuffed his hands, and then hung him up. This torture was inflicted on him three times. His wrists were covered with scars. He was also bound with rope and whipped with rubber tubes. Later, his family handed in money to bail him out and now await his trial. The police station continued to coerce him to make a false testimony. Liu Yunjiang and his wife did not want to frame good people who believe in "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance." They were forced to sell their grocery store, the source of their livelihood, and they became destitute and homeless.
Beginning in March 2006, the 610 Office and police department of Gucheng County in Hebei Province started another round of persecution against Falun Gong practitioners Sun Hongcai, Yao Shihui, Shang Hongshen, He Feng, Lin Wei, Shao Li, and Zhai Hongjun. Police from the detention center and each local police station illegally arrested practitioners, sent them to forced labor camps, and extorted money from them. According to an inside source: "The director of the police department assigned quotas to each subordinate section and police station. We dared not touch the real criminals, so we decided on Falun Gong practitioners to make up the numbers. It was easy to do and profitable, since we could hold them until they forked over the money. When the police department ran over budget, they would arrest 30-40 Falun Gong practitioners and get 200-300 thousand yuan. Then the director and section heads would have some money to squander for a while."
From the evening of March 1, 2006, to the next morning, the police arrested 13 practitioners; in mid April, they arrested another four; from the morning of May 11 to the afternoon of May 12, they took away at least seven practitioners. Several other attempts were not successful because the police could not give a valid reason or show any legal documents when the practitioners demanded them.
Several police dragged Qinghan Town practitioner Ms. Li Binrong from home and tore her pants in the process. Ms. Li was kept unlawfully in the detention center for more than a month and fined an unknown amount of money.
Ms. Wang Xiuzhi is in her 50s and lives in the county. On the morning of March 2, she was taken away from home by about seven officers. They put her in the detention center for more than 20 days. In just a few days, a once healthy woman was tortured until she suffered a heart attack. In addition, her body was so swollen and so painful that she could hardly walk. Even after her release for medical treatment, the police still constantly went to her home to harass her. As a result, the whole family lived in fear and pain.
Practitioners Ms. Zhou Guilan and Liu Yuanzhen asked for 500 yuan back that had been seized illegally by the Political and Security Section, but officer Shao Li simply ignored their requests. Moreover, a few days later, the Zhengkou Town Police Station told them to come to the police department to get the money, but instead, after the two ladies got in the police car, they were taken to the detention center. The police dragged them inside. Liu Yuanzhen protested, "What you are doing is illegal. You trapped me here. I have a young child unattended at home. If anything happens to my child, you will be fully responsible for it. You must release me today." However, Shao Li and others pretended they didn't hear anything and just left them there.
With strong righteous thoughts, Liu Yuanzhen was released. But Ms. Zhou was kept there for over two months, during which time, she went into shock several times. However, Shao Li and the other officers didn't pay attention to it at all and still sent Ms. Zhou to the Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp for two years. While undergoing a physical exam there, Ms. Zhou had a heart attack and fainted. According to law, this kind of critically ill patient cannot be sent to serve forced labor, yet Shao Li and the others insisted. Ms. Zhou's family was very upset because they have already paid a great deal of money without getting her back.
Wang Chunlan was arrested from home by police department officer Cui Jian and others. After being persecuted for two months in the detention center, she was sentenced to one year of forced labor in the Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp.
Ms. Zhang Guizhi is from Xinzhuang Township. Because she kept practicing Falun Gong, she was subjected to persecution in the detention center many times. In 2002, she was sent to prison for three years and was released on the 2005 Chinese New Year. Unable to stand the pressure of one arrest after another, Ms. Zhang's husband died in 2003. Due to financial difficulties, Ms. Zhang has lived on irregular work. On March 2, 2006, while she was working, a group of police officers arrested her and took her to the detention center. Two months later they sent her to Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp, again for an unknown term.
Ms. Dong Yanwen is from Gucheng Town. She has been threatened by police many times for practicing Falun Gong. Last year her mother died from illness related to the stress. On March 2, 2006, Ms. Dong was taken to the detention center by police from the Gucheng Town Police Station. She has a four-year-old son at home and was not set free until her husband demanded her release from the police department many times and paid the extortion fee.
Liu Zhiwen from Xiazhuang Township was arrested many times for practicing Falun Gong. In 2000, he was "illegally sentenced" to two years in prison. On March 2, 2006, Mr. Liu was arrested by local police. After two months in the detention center, he was sentenced to three years in prison. When Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp refused to take him because an exam disclosed an illness, he was sent back to the detention center. After extorting several thousand yuan from him, authorities released him.
Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Lanfen is close to 60 years old and owns a hotel. On the evening of March 1, 2006, Cui Jian and other police officers told her and her husband to go to the Zhengkou Police Station because they had to "investigate their hotel." Her husband was released that day, but Ms. Li was sent to a detention center to do forced labor. She suffered tremendously in both mind and body and even had a heart attack. In late May she was sent to serve 18 months in Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp. Due to her illness, the labor camp would not accept her, so the Gucheng Detention Center kept her. Her family's only option was to pay 5000 yuan to get her back.
On May 11, Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Shen Yingqin was arrested at home. Police officers Shao Li and Zhai Hongjun took her to the detention center. They attempted to send her to the Hengshui Brainwashing Center without success, so they are keeping her in the detention center indefinitely.
On the afternoon of May 12, more than 20 police officers, including Cui Jian and Sun Guoheng, suddenly broke into practitioner Ms. Ye Shufang's place to search illegally. They also took advantage of the situation to get Ms. Ye's daughter-in-law, practitioner Wei Xiubian, to come home from work and arrested her as well. They put her in the detention center for one month and the National Security Group extorted over 1000 yuan from her.
In the afternoon on May 12, police arrested practitioner Ms. Fang Xinzhi and injured her arm by twisting it. Her left hand became so painful that she could not hold anything. They kept her in the detention center for one month and extorted over 1000 yuan from her. Her daughter had to live at home alone, in constant worry. Last year, Ms. Fang's husband was sent to three years in Handan Forced Labor Camp because he practiced Falun Gong.
Practitioners who were arrested and detained in May also include: Ning Liying from Juntun Township and Yang Fuyun from Caokou Village of Jianguo Town, as well as Wang Changgen and Zhao Zanhuan from Sanlang Township.
Mr. Zhang Guofeng, around 40, is from the Nanguan District of Changchun City, Jilin Province. He started practicing Falun Gong before 1999. After losing his job he made a living by selling popcorn on the street. At around 10 a.m. on September 27, 2001, he left home to go out and sell popcorn. He never returned.
Ms. Shao Guiling from Hengtou Town, Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province, went missing around March or April 2003. To this day no one knows her whereabouts.
