  • Practitioner Mr. Xu Jishan Drowned by Five Inmates under Orders from the Prison Guards at Daqing Prison

On June 7, 2005, Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Xu Jishan from Daqing City died as a result of fatal abuse in Daqing Prison. It has been confirmed that five inmates drowned him, pushing him into a pool and holding his head under the water. The prison guards ordered them to do this.

    Xu Jishan and his son

Those in Daqing Prison who participated in persecuting Mr. Xu Jishan include:

Jiang Shuchen, the deputy prison head; Guo Chuntang and Wang Debo, prisons guards from the 610 Office; and Li Fengjiang, head of No. 7 Prison Ward.

They ordered inmates Li Liancai, Wang Anhui, Bo Chong, and Guo Liyang to torture practitioner Xu Jishan without restraint in a cell of the No. 7 Prison Ward. Beginning May 13, 2005, they attempted to brainwash him and force him to write the so-called Three Statements to give up Falun Gong practice. They physically tortured him for seven days by forcing him to stand, beating and verbally abusing him, depriving him of sleep, dousing him with cold water, and tying him up with ropes, as well as other cruel methods. The political head of the No. 7 Prison Ward Zhang Dezhi led the inmates to tie Xu up, put him into a pool and pour water over him. Then they forced him to stand on the floor of the laundry, deprived him of sleep, and cruelly tortured him for eight days.

At 8:00 a.m. on June 7, 2005, inmates Li Liancai, Guo Liyang, Wang Anhui, Bo Chong and another one tore off Mr. Xu's clothes, dragged him into the laundry, and poured over 100 basins of cold water over him. As they were pushing Xu Jishan into a pool, many inmates in the cells heard him yell "Help!" He died at about 1:00 p.m. on June 7 as a result of this torture.

After his death, Mr. Xu Jishan was taken to the No. 4 Hospital of Daqing City. His body is being kept in the hospital's mortuary. So far, those responsible still dare not report the death to their superiors and are trying their best to cover up their crimes.

Brainwashing Methods used in Shiliping Forced Labor Camp: Beating, Torture, and Psychotropic Drugs

Police officers in the Shiliping Forced Labor Camp, Zhejiang Province persecute detained Falun Gong practitioners using various torture methods, including injecting them with psychotropic drugs. A major increase in the cruel tortures occurred after the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp (a notorious camp with a reputation as "hell on earth" for Falun Gong practitioners) sent a group to teach the Shiliping Forced Labor Camp the evil torture methods they use. To carry out their "lessons," the labor camp seeks to brainwash each newly arrived practitioner. The tactics they use are solitary confinement, beatings and drug injections. The police set the standard for determining that a practitioner has been "transformed" when there is a visible mental collapse. If a practitioner isn't affected mentally, the police would not consider the practitioner to be transformed.

The police fear that their evil deeds will be exposed, so they take advantage of the Falun Gong practitioners' kindness, and tell each practitioner they release that if they reveal to others the horrors they have experienced, the unreleased practitioners will be treated twice as harshly!

Some practitioners, not realizing that these threats were just a ploy, and worrying about the safety of the other detained practitioners, didn't expose the merciless behavior of the guards right away. Thus, the guards continued their terrible deeds unabated. Now, it is important to expose what I experienced and saw during my two years of imprisonment in Shiliping.

Shiliping Forced Labor Camp used to be the largest forced labor camp in Zhejiang Province for criminals undergoing drug rehabilitation. After the persecution started in July 1999, it was turned into a concentration camp where Falun Gong practitioners are detained and tortured. Under the command of the Zhejiang Province 610 Office, from 2000 to 2001, local police stations and detention centers sent all of the steadfast Falun Gong practitioners to this forced labor camp for brainwashing. If the brainwashing failed, the practitioner would be immediately sentenced to forced labor. Around 2000, the 610 Office held many brainwashing sessions in Zhejiang Province. Zhu Zhizao, a police officer at the forced labor camp, is very insidious and deceitful. He traveled all over Zhejiang to teach others his brainwashing methods. He was appointed Associate Head of the Fourth Division at the labor camp for teaching others to be so cruel.

    Forced Brainwashing Sessions

Every newly arrived practitioner who refused to give up his or her belief in the principles of Falun Gong was detained in a small, isolated room, and exposed to intense anti-Falun Gong propaganda. The "session" might be as short as one week or as long as a few months. The police did not allow practitioners to sleep for more than 5 hours a night. Sometimes we were not allowed to sleep at all. Whenever our eyes closed, inmates who acted as monitors would force our eyelids open. The police even allowed the prisoners to use toothpicks to prop open our eyelids. Every day, from morning to night, we were tortured by the repeated playing of videos slandering Falun Gong, and played at an extremely loud volume. Meanwhile, two prisoners held each practitioner's arms to force the practitioner to stay in the chair without moving. While watching the slanderous videos, we were repeatedly coerced to write down our "new understandings." In the little room, which was less than 10 square meters (about 105 square feet) in size, the windows were covered with very heavy curtains. The air inside was stale. Frequently, the officers would rush into the room and start belittling and swearing at us. Each meal consisted of rice with a little bit of pickle. We were not allowed to have any other food. Only when a practitioner wrote a promise to stop practicing Falun Gong (against his or her conscience) would the practitioner be allowed to take a shower and have a full night's sleep. Due to the torture, some practitioners became mentally disoriented and were sent to the hospital for treatment.

    Confinement Room

After the police failed to "transform" a practitioner, they would put the practitioner in confinement. There were 4 confinement rooms. Each room was about the size of a double bed and it was totally sealed off from the outside world -- without so much as a tiny opening. Inside, it was hard to breathe. In one corner of the ceiling was a surveillance camera. In the middle of the ceiling was a huge light. When it was turned on, practitioners experienced feeling very uncomfortable all over their bodies. When it was turned off, the room was totally dark. With the metal door closed, the police or other criminal inmates were able to beat practitioners without fear of detection. Electric batons were also used to shock the Falun Gong practitioners.

    "Stewing the Eagle"

In the coldest winter temperatures, some practitioners were forced to take off their clothes, socks, and shoes and stand on the cold, concrete bed. They were not allowed to move. When police officers torture a practitioner using this "stewing the eagle" method, they don't allow them to sleep. If the practitioner closes his or her eyes, an officer, or the prisoners who are monitoring the practitioners, make a loud noise such as knocking a stainless-steel cup sharply to frighten the practitioner awake. The huge light is on all the time, day and night. Even those who were monitoring the practitioners were frightened to stay there. After being tortured in this way for an extended period, the practitioner would be close to mentally collapsing and may appear to be in a trance.

    Nerve-Damaging Injections

Those who refused to be coerced into renouncing their beliefs in Falun Gong were injected with psychotropic drugs, and then locked in the confinement room. The police used the surveillance camera, or opened the little window on the metal door, to monitor and/or frighten the practitioners.

One practitioner who was injected with such drugs described the experience this way:

"After I woke up, I felt indescribable fear. Every face I saw was distorted and looked like a ghost. I felt that I was in hell and was alternately cold and hot. I felt like a laboratory rat. When I heard the mewing of a cat outside, I thought that the cat would immediately become as big as a tiger and would be released inside the cell to tear me apart. Shadows on the walls were alive and looked like snakes and other poisonous insects that jumped off the walls. The dark purple traces on the floor looked like blood marks left by those who had died there. Every pore of my body gave off the terrible smell of the drug. My saliva and urine also smelled like the drug. The guards and prisoners watched me rolling all over the concrete bed and struggling. Sometimes I cried uncontrollably. I couldn't tell how long I was in this state. At the end I couldn't tell time any more. Every second seemed like it was thousands of years long. Every time I blinked my eyes, it felt like a few hundred years had passed. My mind and heart were totally exhausted. My brain was so tired that it was beyond the limits of my endurance. My spirit was struggling to stay alive and was on the brink of collapse. The torture seemed endless.

Every day, my food was a tiny bit of pickle and some rice that had sand in it. If I couldn't eat it, I was sworn at. When I was thirsty, and asked for some water, I was given only a little after repeated requests. Sometimes, the water was laced with some powdered chemical too.

The police frequently rushed in to the room to swear at and ridicule me. My mind was under constant pressure."

    Intense Labor

After the practitioner was mentally weakened, he or she would be endlessly told to report what they were thinking, and had to study the brainwashing materials. The inmates around them would also be asked to report everything about the practitioner. Meanwhile, one had to complete long hours of intense labor, and was told, "If you can't meet your work quota, your term will be extended." They used all these means to force us to work faster and faster. In fact, the police wanted the prisoners to be more productive so that they would be paid extra bonuses! The working and sanitation conditions were very poor. Some practitioners' legs became edematous and lame because they stood up for so long. Some practitioners' hands were severely chafed. The products we produced were knit sweaters, lighters, quartz clock components, toys and decorations. Some of these products were exported to western countries after officials covered up the fact that they had been produced by slave labor.

What follows are some descriptions of the tortures endured by Falun Gong practitioners who were detained in the Fourth Division:

A Falun Gong practitioner who used to be a reporter for Linan Daily became mentally disordered after being injected with the hallucinogenic drugs and being confined in the small room for a long time.

Falun Gong practitioner, Li Heping, from Hangzhou City, was injected with the drugs and beaten in the confinement room. The guards then claimed that Li went insane from practicing Falun Gong!

A retired elderly Falun Gong practitioner was detained in the confinement room for 2-3 months. After the long period of isolation from people, the practitioner appeared numb.

Practitioner, Wang Dawu, from Hangzhou City, has been confined in the tiny isolation room eight times. His last term at the labor camp was extended by six months. He used to be a very strong person. After serving his term, he was emaciated due to the torture. However, he was abducted again and sentenced to ten years in prison.

Many Falun Gong practitioners were hung up in the air for over ten days at a time. While suspended, they had no choice but to relieve themselves on the spot. Among them were Tang Jinghui, Fu Yue, Li Jiancheng and Yang Dexin. Practitioner Chen Zhongsheng from Wenzhou City was tied on the tiger bench and his feet and toes suffered frostbite. Yu Bin, a college student, was left with a lame leg because of the forced labor. Zhang Jianbo, a student from Zhejiang University of Technology, was injured when he was force-fed.

When a practitioner became mentally unstable because of the torture, the police would say he or she went insane from practicing Falun Gong. If a practitioner died from the torture, the police would say the practitioner committed suicide. They concealed the physical decline of the practitioners by not letting their family members visit them. Visitors could only see a façade of normalcy that the labor camp presented them. Ironically, Shiliping Forced Labor Camp is called the Provincial Civilized Forced Labor Camp. Because the Communist Party strictly controls the media, it is very difficult for people outside to know what happens inside the labor camps.

The perpetrators of these heinous crimes include:

Directors of the forced labor camp: Xue Yongxing and Luo Aimin

Associate Directors: Hu Jianhong, Yu (the former head of the fourth division)

Official of the administration office: Huang Zhongming (fierce and deceitful)

The Head of Education Department: Wang Zongliang

The political instructors of the fourth division: Li Hongqing (in charge of persecuting Falun Gong practitioners), Zhu Zhizao (a representative of the forced labor camp who participates in brainwashing sessions all over Zhejiang Province)

The direct team of the fourth division: Ma Jinxi (the political instructor), Gong Yuegu, Jiang Wan, Mou Zhongming, Ma (director), and Xu (director).

Eleven Practitioners Recently Arrested by 610 Office in Changyi City, Shandong Province

On May 19, 2005, between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Shandong Province Changyi City 610 Office "Anti-cult Squad" Chief, Chen Xiaodong, personally ordered the Changyi City Police Department Criminal Police Squad, and Zhangling Town Police Station Chief Ma Fusheng (Male, in his 40's), to launch a massive arrest of practitioners in Zhangling Town. Chen and Ma each led more then six police officers on raids of Falun Gong practitioners' homes. They confiscated personal property and imprisoned eleven practitioners at the Changyi City Detention Center.

Ms. Cao Shulan is 40 years old, and her daughter is 18. They live in Niujibei Village, Zhangling Town, Changyi City. Ms. Cao and her daughter both work in a spinning mill in Caoge Village. Around 10 a.m. on May 19, village officials led three police vehicles to the mill to arrest Ms. Cao. Four police officers beat Ms. Cao and tried to force her into their car. Ms. Cao shouted out, "Falun Dafa is good!" Ms. Cao's 18-year-old daughter tried to save her, but a police officer grabbed her daughter by the throat and threw her to the ground. Another police officer videotaped the scene. Someone immediately informed Ms. Cao's family at home of her arrest.

The police arrived at Niujibei Village to search Ms. Cao's home ten minutes later. Ms. Cao's 70-year-old mother-in-law stopped them at the door. She sternly told them, "You brutes! You even beat a child. Get out of my house!" The police left shamefully, and then went to the home of Mr. Fang Xide, the oldest son of Ms. Cao's mother-in-law. Since no one was home, the police broke in and seized a photo of Teacher Li. Someone videotaped the search.

Mr. Fang Xide, 40 years old, lives in Niujibei Village. He was visiting Mr. Cao Jinqi when the police busted in and arrested him.

Mr. Cao Jinqin, 40 years old, lives in Dongmawan Village, Zhangling Town. Several police vehicles arrived at his home around 1 p.m. Mr. Cao, his wife, Mr. Fang Xide and a female practitioner from Gaomi County, Shangdong Province, were taken away in a police car.

Mr. Zhou Weitain, over 50 years old, lives in Dongxiapo Village, Zhangling Town. The police arrested him and searched his home unlawfully around noon.

Ms. Gao Xiuhua, 40 years old, lives in Yinjia Village, Zhangling Town. She was at home when three police vehicles pulled up. Four police officers forcefully carried her into a car, knocking off one of her shoes as she was pushed in.

Mr. Li Shulia, over 50 years old, lives in Shangtuan Village, Zhangling Town. The police attempted to arrest him at 4 p.m. They didn't take him away, because they had beaten him so badly that they broke his leg.

Mr. Zhao Guirong is over 50 years old. A group of police arrested him around 1 p.m.

Mr. Xie Shirong is over 50 years old. Three police vehicles arrived at his home around noon. The police forced him and his wife into a police car and took them away.

Mr. Zhang Zhonggui, about 60 years old, lives in Zhangjiapu Village, Zhangling Town. He was taken to the Changyi Detention Center by several police on the afternoon of May 20, 2005.

Here is some information about the police who participated in the arrests:

Chen Xiaodong, male, 41 years old, is the Chief of the Shandong Province Changyi City 610 Office's "Anti-Cult Squad." He has actively participated in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. For several years, he has personally arrested many practitioners in the local towns and townships. Clearwisdom.net has carried reports of his activities many times. He does not feel any remorse and has become even worse. His signature has sent more than one hundred practitioners to court and/or into labor camps. Chen personally arrested five practitioners from Shibu Town and sent them to labor camps in April.

The telephone number of the Zhangling Town Police Station is: 86-536-7772005.

A The Persecution of a University Student in Guangdong Province

Ms. Chen Li was a senior student at the Shantou Art College in Guangdong Province. Because she practiced Falun Gong, she was sent to forced labor three different times. Since 1999 these incarcerations have totaled four and a-half years. Ms. Chen was ruthlessly tortured each time she was in a forced labor camp. Since she remained steadfast in practicing Falun Gong, her school didn't allow her to finish her studies. She has difficulty finding a job and has no source of income. Following are the details:

In November 1999, Ms. Chen was detained for 15 days because she practiced Falun Gong. After that, the school officials exerted pressure on her and threatened to expel her from school unless she gave up the practice. Such pressure made her unable to concentrate on her studies. Her teachers and classmates believed the Communist Party's (CCP) false media reports about Falun Gong and also gave her a hard time. The CCP's statements were far different from what she had personally experienced, which confused her. At the end of November 1999, out of trust and hope for the central government, she went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong, but was sentenced to one and a-half years forced labor. She was then sent to the Shaoguan Prison.

She suffered a great deal in prison. The guards frequently shocked her with electric batons. They handcuffed and shackled her arms and legs for over two months. When she was released in February 2001, having no diploma, she had a hard time to find a job and was forced to wander about on the streets. In April 2001 she was arrested again, in Zhuhai City, and jailed at the Zhuhai No. 2 Detention Center. She was tortured with the method "Shackle to Crosses" for over 20 days there and then sent to the Sanshui Forced Labor Camp for two years. Because she would not write the Three Statements there, the police denied her use of the toilet and continuously deprived her of sleep for several days and nights. They made her remain in a squatting position all the time and would not allow her to sit down or stand up. The object of the torture was to humiliate her to a very great extent.

After her term was up in April 2003, she repeatedly requested to go back to school. The school authorities and the 610 Office refused her request. Later on, with the help of a friend, she found a teaching position in a private school in Shenzhen City. Because her employer didn't provide her with lodging, she had to rent a room outside the school. Merely because she had a few visits from fellow practitioners, the Shenzhen 610 Office arrested her and sentenced her to one year of forced labor. In the labor camp she was physically tortured and mentally tormented using various methods. She has been locked up in a "dark room" for over two months and brainwashed daily by six police officers and four drug addicts in turn. She was allowed only a couple of hours sleep or was even deprived of sleep every day. To use the toilet or eat she needed to make an application in the squat position. When she was released in October 2004, Ms. Chen couldn't find a job and had to move from place to place.

Ms. Chen has been looking everywhere in the Zhujiang Delta area for a job with only a certificate of proof of study from the school. Because nobody will hire her, her life is extremely difficult. Although she has frequently requested permission to finish her studies, her school has always refused her requests.

Police Arrest Mr. Yu Qizhao from Anqiu City, Shandong Province - His Parents in Their 80's Are Left to Fend for Themselves

On March 15, 2005, Mr. Yu Qizhao, a practitioner from the Sangjiayao Village, Liujiayao County of Anqiu City, was arrested by the police from the Liujiayao Police Station. He is currently being detained at the Wangcun Labor Education Center for labor "re-education." His parents are in their 80s, and one of them is handicapped. There is no one else to look after them.

His parents know nothing about their son's arrest. They are mostly deaf due to old age. They only know that Mr. Yu was taken away by the police from the Liujiayao Police Station. The day after their son's arrest, the police came to get their signatures. As they are illiterate, the police had to get someone else to sign for them and took their fingerprints. Since then the elderly parents have not heard anything else about their son. They cannot take care of themselves and have no choice but to depend on their relatives. They long for their son to come home.

Mr. Yu Qizhao, 50 years old, was once illegally arrested in 2003 for practicing Falun Gong. The police told his parents that he would be taken away for 30 days. They blindly believed that the police would be true to their word. But after 30 days he did not come back, and the elderly couple went to question the village Party secretary. The CCP Secretary said that he did not know anything about it and suggested that they go to the police station instead. The police told them that Mr. Yu had been sent away for labor "re-education." His parents were surprised and asked "Why? What kind of law did he break?" The police answered, "Because he practices Falun Gong."

Mr. Yu's parents said that they were very old and needed their son to look after them.

The police replied, "You can go to the CCP Committee to appeal."

When they asked the police to accompany them to the CCP Committee, the police not only refused to accompany them but also drove them out.

The elderly couple still depends on their relatives even now.

Mr. Yu Qizhao is being held at the Wangcun Labor Education Center. We do not have further details.

After July 20, 1999, because her son and daughter-in-law were all assistants at the local practice site and her granddaughters were all cultivating, their family was constantly harassed by the different levels of the 610 Office. They were threatened and spied on. Her son and daughter-in-law were illegally detained, had money extorted from them, and had funds deducted from their salaries. Their house was ransacked. Ms. Wang was forced to go back to her daughter's home and passed away on February 14, 2002.
