  • Within 5 Days of Beginning to Practice Falun Gong, a Woman Dies of Persecution Suffered in Police Custody

Li Hui of Weiyuan County, Sichuan Province obtained a Falun Gong exercise CD and found that the exercises benefited her greatly. Her entire body became relaxed. Therefore, she began to practice Falun Gong. But when the police found that she had the book Zhuan Falun in her possession, she was persecuted to death within five days of practicing Falun Gong.

Ms. Li Hui, 42 years old, was originally from No.11 Village, Gaoshi Town, Weiyuan County, resided at Yangliu Village, Longhui Town, Weiyuan County.

Li Hui worked in a different province. On April 29, 2005 she was informed that her mother was ill, and she hurried back home to see her. The afternoon after she arrived at home, she took out a CD that she was given while traveling to see her mother, and played it for her parents. Only then did she realize that it was a Falun Gong exercise CD. Li Hui also practiced the five exercises while watching the CD. She felt very comfortable. She told her father, "I also want to practice the exercises and I want to read the Falun Gong books. I want to be a practitioner." This is how Li Hui started on her cultivation path. For five days she diligently studied Falun Gong and did the exercise. She also got the book Zhuan Falun for her friends in another province.

On May 4th, during her trip back to her work place, the Chengdu City Train Station staff searched her and discovered that Li Hui was carrying the book Zhuan Falun, a photo of Teacher and two exercise tapes. The police immediately arrested her and took her to Longhui Town Police Station in Weiyuan County, where she suffered brutal persecution.

On May 5th, Gaoshi Town Police Station staff received notice from Longhui Town Police station, asking them to come to the No.11 Village, Xiaowan Township, Gaoshi Town.

Staff from the Gaoshi Town Police Station broke into and ransacked the home of Li Hui's father, Li Yingmao. The police arrested Li Yingmao and took him to the Gaoshi Town Police Station for interrogation. During the interrogation, Li Yingmao found out that his daughter Li Hui had died in police custody. (Details of how she was killed are yet to be collected and verified.)

Police from Longhui Town Police Station were afraid to accept responsibility for Li Hui's death. On May 5, two plainclothes policemen drove Li Hui's body in a truck to the Huang Shanqiao area, 20 miles from her father's home. They chose a drainage ditch, less than 5-inches deep, filled with water from a leaking iron pipe. It was also full of weeds. They pushed Li Hui's forehead into the drainage ditch, pulled her clothes off her back and over her forehead, and made sure that the water from the tiny water pipe dripped on Li Hui's naked back. They set it up to make it look like a drowning incident. Several minutes later the two plainclothes police jumped into the truck and drove off.

Some time later the police asked crematory staff to pick up Li Hui's body. Pictures were taken. Li Hui's relatives were not notified. As no relatives were there, they asked the pathologist to perform an autopsy. The falsified death diagnosis was "death by drowning."

On May 8, 3 days after Li Hui's death, Gaoshi Town Police Station staff notified Li Yingmao to come to the crematory. Policeman Liu Ren asked Li Yingmao to identify his daughter from a picture. Li identified the person in the picture as his daughter. The pathologist said, "Your daughter was not murdered. She died in an accident. We have already opened her abdomen and found no evidence of foul play. Maybe an autopsy of her head may show some problem. We won't know until we perform an autopsy."

Li Yingmao said, "Why did you not contact us before performing an autopsy of my daughter's abdomen. Now, since she died, what's the use to continue with the autopsy?" Li Hui's family members did not wish Li Hui's body to be further violated by the pathologist. They were forced to pay for the autopsy expense and the crematory fee. The total cost was 1,730 yuan. Only then were they allowed to take Li Hui's ashes home.

Practitioner Ms. Wang Aihua's Life is in Danger

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Wang Aihua from Qiqihar City in Heilongjiang Province has been arrested twice and tortured many times for practicing Falun Gong and following the principles of "Truthfulness, Benevolence and Forbearance" to become a better person. On March 7, 2003, she was sentenced to eight years in prison and sent to the Heilongjiang Women's Prison located in Harbin City. In the prison, Ms. Wang was tortured again resulting in several heart attacks. Her life is in danger. Another practitioner named Huang Liping from Qiqihar City was also seriously tortured inside the women's prison.

On September 13, 1999, the local community council put Ms. Wang under house arrest. On October 16, 1999, they sent her to a detention center. Around October 20, the director of Qiqihar City's No. 2 Detention Center, Li Youqui, beat Ms. Wang with a whip until her hips turned purple. Around November 10, Ms. Wang and some other practitioners were taken to the basement of a hotel where they were forced to do the exercises while being photographed. Later on, the photos were used as evidence against them. The major perpetrators in this incident were Li Youqui, Chen Zhicai, Sun Yanbin and some others.

On December 7, 1999, Ms. Wang was sentenced to one year in prison and sent to the Shuanhe Forced Labor Camp in Qiqihar City. It's impossible to recount the number of serious beatings that Ms. Wang experienced inside the camp. Later on, the camp extended Ms. Wang's detention term by more than 11 months without any reason. All together, Ms. Wang was detained for twenty-three months. The major perpetuators in this round of persecution include the directors of the forced labor camp Mr. Bai and Hong Zhenquan.

On the night of April 15 of 2002, police officers from Tiefeng Town Public Security Station arrested and tortured Ms. Wang. They handcuffed using the torture called "Carrying a Sword on the Back." They cuffed her hands behind her back with one hand being pulled back over the shoulder and the other one pulled up from the waist. Police officers then hung her up with her hands cuffed. While her whole body was hanging in the air by a rope tied to the handcuffs, some officers kicked her.

The next day, Ms. Wang was transferred to the Tiefeng No. 1 Middle Level Armed Police Unit where she underwent electric shock torture for more than half an hour. Police officers wrapped electric wires around her thumbs and let electricity flow through the wires. The shocks damaged Ms. Wang's heart and her whole body shuddered; her legs were injured and her hands were swollen and deformed. Her arms became numb and she had difficulty breathing. A serious blood shortage was detected in Ms. Wang's heart muscles. The main perpetrator in this incident was Sun Yanbin.

Two days later on April 18, Ms. Wang was put into the city detention center and sentenced to eight years in prison. On March 7 of 2003, Ms. Wang was transferred to the Heilongjiang Women's Prison in Harbin City. Certain prison guards carried out random physical abuse on Falun Gong practitioners held in the prison. Practitioners complained about the abuse to the on-site prison monitoring officials, but no one solved the problem. Practitioners were not allowed to speak to each other. The prison also asked the criminal inmates to monitor and spy on practitioners' daily activities. Falun Gong practitioners in the prison were thus tortured both mentally and physically.

On September 6, 2003, Ms. Wang was forced to squat for three days and three nights. She was not allowed to sleep throughout those three days. Then her hands were tied behind her back and she was hung up in the air again. On the fourth day, prison guards started to force Ms. Wang to run in the prison while they beat her with police batons, electric batons, whips or sticks. Ms. Wang was not given enough food to eat and no water at all. Prison guards handcuffed Ms. Wang's hands to the iron window bars. Her heart couldn't sustain the strenuous physical movements, but the prison guards forced several inmates to drag Ms. Wang along on a run.

Ms. Wang was not allowed to sleep at night, and whenever she closed her eyes someone would beat her. Prison guards Zheng Jie and Zhang Chunhua forced inmates to brutally beat Ms. Wang on her face with whips or bamboo sticks. After the beatings, they would pour salt water on the wounds and stab her face with toothpicks. As a result of the torture, Ms. Wang's face was seriously deformed and turned purple. Her face was almost completely covered with injuries from the beatings and stabbing. Ms. Wang's heart rate reached 110 beats per minute. Later she was locked inside a tiny cell for more than forty days with both hands cuffed behind her back the whole time. She was given some corn buns and porridge to eat twice a day.

On March 1, 2004, Ms. Wang refused to put on the prison uniform and was handcuffed with her hands behind her back for half a month. On August 1, 2004, she refused to put on the prison uniform again and didn't respond to a prison roster call. As a result, she was handcuffed behind her back for more than four months. During that period of time, Ms. Wang went on a hunger strike that lasted 64 days. Prison guards forced fed her with milk mixed with large quantities of salt and drugs (some of the drugs caused hallucinations). At night, Ms. Wang had to sleep on the cold hard floor without any bed sheets.

As a result of her being handcuffed behind her back for such a long period of time, Ms. Wang had several heart attacks. The prison guards didn't care to help. They insisted that she was just faking it. Recently, Ms. Wang was forced to carry a harness with her. The prison asked inmates to monitor Ms. Wang all the time. She was also locked in a tiny cell with her hands cuffed. It was damp and cold inside the tiny cell, and she didn't have a blanket to warm herself at night. Since Ms. Wang had heart problems, her life was in a very dangerous state all the time.

Practitioner Ms. Huang Liping is 42 years old. The Tiefeng Public Security Station arrested her on April 15, 2002. Police officer Chen Zhicai and others tortured Ms. Huang by pulling her four limbs apart and handcuffing her hands behind her back in the "Carrying a Sword on the Back" position. On April 16, 2002, Ms. Huang was transferred to the armed police unit where police officers shocked her with electricity the same way they shocked Ms. Wang. As a result of the shock, Ms. Huang had a heart attack.

Later, Ms. Huang was sentenced to ten years in prison and was sent to the Heilongjiang Women's Prison in Harbin City. In May 2002, prison guard Lu Jingping locked Ms. Huang in a room for 24 hours with her hands and feet handcuffed. In July 2003, in order to protest against the persecutions, Ms. Huang refused to respond to the prison roster call and also refused to squat down. As a result, one inmate named Liu Wenge rushed at Ms. Huang and lifted her legs in the air knocking her to the ground. Ms. Huang fell to the ground landing on her back and had a heart attack right on the scene. At the end of November of that same year, prison guards Wu Yanjie and Tao Shuping decided to handcuff Ms. Huang to her bed for four days and nights. Ms. Huang had to sit on the concrete floor. Later, prison guards dragged her outside where they beat her and let her freeze in the bone-chilling cold. On November 28, 2003, all the practitioners in the prison started to recite Lunyu and shouted out "Falun Dafa is good!" in order to protest against the persecutions. Prison guards rushed over and beat the practitioners with electric batons. Ms. Huang was beaten unconscious and fell to the ground. On April 9, 2004, prison guard Qiao Linna handcuffed Ms. Huang and hung her up for four to five hours.

Update on Zhang Ziling, the Orphaned Child of Practitioner Zhang Zhenggang, from Jiangsu

Mr. Zhang Zhenggang of Huai'an City, Jiangsu Province was murdered by police officers from the Huai'an Police Station on March 30, 2000. The following is an update on the situation of Zhang Ziling, the child he left behind.

Zhang Ziling, 16, is a sophomore in Chuzhou High School (Class No. 7). Currently, she is living with her aunt, Zhang Zhaoming, and has no financial support whatsoever.

Her father, Zhang Zhenggang was born in 1964. He was an employee at the Huaian Industrial Trading Company. He started practicing Falun Gong years ago and volunteered to organize the Huai'an Falun Gong practice site. On March 2, 2000, Huai'an police unconstitutionally detained him at the Haui'an Detention Center. On March 25, he was brutally beaten. He fell unconscious due to serious head injuries and was taken to the Huaiai City First People's Hospital for emergency treatment. The doctors operated on his head, opening his skull to remove the accumulated blood. He was under police surveillance the whole time. On the night of March 30, the doctors performed an electrocardiogram on him. Although he was still in a coma and his heartbeat was weak, he was still breathing. Soon afterwards, about 40 to 50 police officers secured the hospital hallways and his room, forced the doctor to remove the oxygen tank and the IV drip, injected him with an unidentified substance and sent his body to the crematory.

Zhang Ziling's mother is Zhang Zhaoyun, born in 1962. She has also been detained several times for practicing Falun Gong. In July, 2001 she was sentenced to five years in prison. At present, she is being unconstitutionally detained in the Xingsheng Weaving Factory Women's Prison Camp, in Nantong City, Jiangsu Provice.

Zhang Ziling's grandmother was also sent to prison for three years because she practices Falun Gong.

Zhang Shufen From Heilongjiang Province Recalls Her Detention and Torture Experiences

    1. After my first arrest, police verbally abused me and extorted a "fine"

At the end of November 1999, I went to Beijing to appeal for Dafa. I wanted to say "Falun Dafa is good" on Tiananmen Square. However, Zhao Yuhe and police officer Ren Shuangku, both from the commune where I lived, arrested me at Tiananmen Square. They deceived me by saying they would send me home. In fact, they sent me to a detention center. More than ten days later my family came to see me. The guard told me a cadre from the commune issued a guarantee for me and told me to sign my name on a paper. After I signed it, I realized it was not the right thing to do. The next day I told the female guard, "I shouldn't have signed my name! I solemnly declare that my signature is null!" She verbally abused me in response. On the third day, the cadre who had issued the guarantee came to take me back home. The commune held a meeting to criticize the cadre for helping me, and he was forced to make a self-criticism statement at the meeting. Later he told me that I had been fined 1,000 yuan and that he had paid the fine for me temporarily.

    2. During my second arrest I suffered ruthless torture, such as being hung up and exposed to freezing temperatures, as well as loosing money due to extortion

One day in 2000, the local police station demanded that I turn over Master's articles. Because I refused to turn them in, the head of the police station, Zhong Linyi, ordered my arrest and detainment. At the detention center I suffered the torture of being hung-up. They also beat me and other Falun Gong practitioners savagely. During chilly days, they forced us to stand outside bare-footed and poured cold water on us. They also verbally abused us. Two months later after I was released, my daughter told me, "The detention center extorted 2,000 yuan from us to release you. All the money we borrowed had to be returned with interest."

    3. On the third arrest my home was searched; I was forced to kneel down in front of youths and suffered cruel beating

In July of 2000 I had just returned home after a few months in a detention center. The police drove to my home and searched it without showing any ID. I was arrested again and sent to a detention center.

In the detention center I was interrogated three times consecutively. The interrogators wanted to know where the Falun Gong materials that they had confiscated from my home came from. I refused to answer. They beat and kicked me. I was ordered to kneel down. I refused, so they kicked me down and threatened me, "If you don't tell us, we will force you to be like this every day." I stood up. They forcefully pushed me down while beating and verbally abusing me. They also said, "Your daughter is going to get married; don't you want to help with her wedding? If you tell us, we will let you go!" I told them, "I would tell nothing even if I knew everything. If I tell you, one more innocent person will be persecuted." They said, "Do you study Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance? If you don't tell us, you failed on truthfulness." I replied, "If I were honest with you, you would use this as an excuse to persecute a kind person."

They also ordered the doctor to inject me and other practitioners with an unknown substance. We refused: why should we healthy people take injections? The head of the detention center pulled us down from the bed and kicked us with their leather shoes.

In the commune police station they opened my private letters. I said that I would sue them. The head of the police station, Zhong Linyi said, "Who will you sue? I am the law. I am in control. This is what you deserve for practicing Falun Gong."

    4. During the fourth arrest I could not spend the Chinese New Year at home

On February 5, 2002, my husband had only been home from the detention center for one month. He was black and blue all over his body from the beatings he suffered. His hands were swollen and black. Several policemen stayed inside our house and would not leave. They asked me, "Do you plan to go to Beijing?" I said, "I don't have money left after my child's wedding. There is no plan currently. Moreover, the Spring Festival is coming." Ren Shuangku said, "Will you go later?" I replied, "If the Fa is not rectified, I may go."

In the morning my husband took the bus to a relatives' home to borrow money for the Chinese New Year. Ren Shuangku called the police station. Shortly after that they came and took my son, my son's classmates, and me to the police station. I saw my husband there as well. They detained us all.

On February 8, they arrested more than three hundred people in three days. There were 91 Falun Gong practitioners in our cell. We shouted, "Let us go back home! Falun Gong is innocent! Master is innocent! Falun Gong practitioners are innocent! Suffocate the evildoers! Eliminate the evil! The evil has destroyed itself!" We shouted all morning, which scared the detention center officials. They even called the anti-riot team who were equipped with guns, who patrolled back and forth in the hallway.

That afternoon during roll call, 83 practitioners were unlawfully sent to a forced labor camp. I was locked up in the detention center for over four months. They demanded over two thousand Yuan for a boarding fee, which I couldn't afford to pay. The detention center head sent people to my hometown to investigate my financial situation, and found out I indeed had no money. They verbally abused me when they returned.

At last we were released. The township government wanted to confiscate the land assigned to my family and would not allow us to grow crops on it any more. I said, "If you don't let us grow crops, our whole family will go to Beijing." They said, "We said this just to frighten you. We hope you will continue to cultivate your land and do your job well."

    5. On the fifth arrest, ongoing suffering could not affect my determination to cultivate

On April 20, 2002, officers from the local police station and the village head, Dong Fushan, illegally searched my home. Later Wu Baowang and I were sent to a detention center. On the third day we were ordered to give our fingerprints. I was not a criminal, why should I give them my fingerprint? They pulled and pushed me to take the fingerprint. I made a firm fist. Two of them used their all strengths in an attempt to open my hand, but failed. The head of the detention center ordered the prison doctor to inject my hand. Shortly after, the anti-riot team was called in and four people stood on each side. I told them the truth. The next day I realized that my hands were swollen because the jailors squeezed them so harshly.

On the 25th day of detention, Wu Baowang died from roughly administered force-feeding in the detention center. They used highly concentrated salt water to brutally force-feed Wu Baowang. The feeding tube broke his digestive tract and the salt water flooded out, which caused his death. The detention center officials, though, informed his family that he died from a brain hemorrhage.

    6. Hell on earth -Harbin Women's Prison

On July 4, 2003, I was sent to solitary confinement. There was only very thin noodle soup twice a day to eat. I was forced to sit with both legs stretched straight in front of me for a long time, and was not permitted to change positions. In the evening I could not get to sleep under the cold weather because of not having a quilt. I felt dizzy whenever I stood up due to the lack of food.

On July 31, 2003, prisoner Qu Guixian told me division leader Xia wanted to talk to me, but before I could enter Xia's office, six people holding handcuffs in their hands jumped on me and began torturing me. They handcuffed my hands behind my back, with one hand over my shoulder and the other hand against my lower back. The jailed criminals Wu Liqun, Wang Botao, Han Jianying, Liu Shuxia and Hou Yingli, held an electrical baton to torture me. They pushed me down onto the floor, sometimes with my face up, sometimes with my face down. They kicked and ruthlessly beat me. Wu Liqun was tall and sturdy. She beat me with her fist and kicked me; she even deliberately kicked me toward chairs and the table, causing my body to hit blunt edges harshly. I was kicked back and forth between them like a ball. She even used an apron to cover my head by tying my neck and pulling the apron backward to tighten the tie. She used four layers of tape to cover my mouth. After she rested for a while she continued to beat me. While beating me she said, "This is precisely hell on earth."

The beating lasted from 1:00 p.m. to about 4:00 p.m. Wang Botao also wrote the word "criminal" on my clothes, even on the vest. Wu Liqun used an electrical baton to shock my back. I was black and blue all over. Even the handcuffs chafed the bone. For several months I could not extend my arm backwards. It hurt severely, even just combing my hair.

One day in August 2003, the division head Cui said to me, "Your mom came. Do you want to see her?" I said, "Yes." She said, "If you want to see her, you must admit that you are a criminal." I said, "I am not a criminal. Why do you ask me to lie?" Cui said, "If you don't admit it you will not be allowed to see your mom." Mom was not able to see me. On the way home she got severe blisters all over her mouth. She fell into bed as soon as she arrived home. Since then, she never got up. She died from the grief. Her mouth and her eyes were open when she died.

Once I wrote a letter to my daughter. When the division head Cui discovered this, she took away the letter, notebook and pen. I asked for them back twice, but she said that she had destroyed them. I said, "The Chinese New Year is coming. I want to write a letter to my daughter. Who does not have children? The notebook and pen are all borrowed." Cui replied, "Bad luck for them if they lent to you; none of you are allowed to write letters."

On March 10, 2004, fifteen practitioners detained on the fifth floor were subjected to excruciating torture methods. We were hung up with two hands cuffed behind the back and attached to the highest point of the upper bunk bed without the feet touching the ground. I went unconscious from the torture, however after I regained consciousness they continued to hang me up. The prisoner Wang Yunyun said, "If you go unconscious again we will pour cold water on you." The staff person Zhou Ying said, "That is what we do to persecute you!"

On May 15, 2004, I was hung up again. The division head Cui also put more than 30 practitioners into a ten-square-meter room and forced them to sit from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Ms. Xiao Guifang from Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province, Was Arrested for Distributing the Nine Commentaries and Suffered an Untimely Death Due to Persecution

Ms. Xiao Guifang, a retired worker from Sichuan Panzhihua Steel Corporation, was arrested and persecuted for distributing the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party. She suffered brutal physical and spiritual persecution at the hands of officers from the Dadukou Police Station, the Public Security Team of the East Division Police Office, and the Panzhihua Steel Corporation 610 Office. She suffered and untimely death as a result of persecution on May 11, 2005.

Practitioner Ms. Xiao Guifang was 55 years old and lived in Apt. 83, Building 49, in Nanshan, Panzhihua City. Around noon on April 26, 2005, she was distributing the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party at the Dadukou Manager's Building in Panzhihua City with fellow practitioner Ms. He Fengming, who also lived in Nanshan. They were trying to explain the facts of the persecution to the people who had been deceived and harmed by lies. As they were distributing copies of the Nine Commentaries, the wife of retired Manager Xue Shicheng saw them and immediately summoned security personnel. Two officers responded, apprehended Ms. Xiao and Ms. He, and took them to the security room of the Manager's Building. The manager's wife told the security officers to call the Dadukou Police Station. Three police officers responded and took Ms. Xiao and Ms. He to the Dadukou Police Station.

At the Dadukou Police Station, Ms. Xiao Guifang and Ms. He Fengming refused to cooperate with the authorities. When they refused to submit to wearing handcuffs, the officers used force to handcuff them. At 6 p.m., the practitioners firmly refused to pose for mug shots, so the police officers again used force to make them obey, this time by grabbing them by the hair and slamming their heads into the wall. To resist the persecution, 60-year-old Ms. He refused to eat her dinner. A police officer fiercely told her that if she didn't eat, they wouldn't feed her for a week.

Practitioner Ms. He refused to acknowledge the persecution and steadfastly resisted her tormentors. With righteous thoughts, she walked out of the police station around 8:30 p.m. She is currently homeless and impoverished.

At 11 p.m. on April 26, 2005, six police officers from the Public Security Team of the East Division Police Office and the Panzhihua Steel Corporation 610 Office, including Zhu Zhangang, Wang Yong, Wang Youmei, and Wang Zhidan, arrived at Ms. Xiao's residence and ransacked her home. Two policewomen, one of whom was Wang Youmei, guarded Ms. Xiao. Having no way to stop the criminal acts of the police officers and to protect her rights, Ms. Xiao brought out a bottle of toilet cleaner and told the police, "You evil police, get out of my house! If you don't get out, I'll drink this poison!" [Note: There's no doubt that the persecution is evil and should be exposed and stopped, but the words and actions of Ms. Xiao Guifang weren't consistent with the requirements for Falun Gong practitioners. Falun Gong teaches that to take anyone's life, including one's own, is wrong.] Police officer Zhu Zhangang said, "Drinking poison has nothing to do with us." Ms. Xiao Guifang could no longer bear the police harassment. Taking the toilet cleaner with her, she went to the bathroom, locked the door behind her, and drank the whole bottle of toilet cleaner.

With money from her friends and relatives, Ms. Xiao Guifang was bailed out on April 28. As a result of the brutal physical and emotional persecution suffered at the hands of officers from the Dadukou Police Station, the Public Security Team of the East Division Police Office and the Panzhihua Steel Cooperation 610 Office, she died in the hospital on May 11, 2005.
