  • Exposing the Criminal Behavior of the Police and Judicial Systems in Panjin City, Liaoning Province

Ms. Hu Zhehui, Mr. Hou Yunfei, and Mr. Xin Minduo and his wife Ms. Bao Juncen are Falun Gong practitioners from Panjin City, Liaoning Province. It has been a month since these practitioners were illegally tried in court. To cover up the illegal behavior of the judicial system, the court did not issue verdicts right after the trial. They threatened the practitioners' relatives in order to stop them from appealing to higher courts. The sentences for the four are: Ms. Hu, 15 years in prison; Mr. Hou Yunfei, 14 years; Mr. Xin, 13 years; and Ms. Bao, 12 years. The sentences are the same as mentioned before the trials, proof that the court did not base its verdicts on any evidence presented at the trials. The trials were clearly just for show.

After Ms. Hu's husband received word of the verdict, and after being threatened by the authorities, he dared not appeal for his wife. Hou Yunfei's family was notified of the verdict only at the end of September, weeks after the trial. Defense attorneys were pressured and afraid to take Mr. Hou's case. Mr. Xin's family never received official notice of the verdict.

The following is a partial list of the facts of persecution of Mr. Xin and his wife Ms. Bao.

    Police Officers Seized Practitioners

On April 2, 2003, police officers from the Xinlongtai Police Group in Panjin City took Mr. Xin Minduo away. Without reason or showing a search warrant, the officers illegally arrested Mr. Xin just because he is a Falun Gong practitioner. They searched his personal items and took more than 1,300 yuan in cash, two cellular phones, and one string of keys. They sent him to the Panjin Ciy Detention Center (also called the Third Detention Center of Panjin City) without informing his family.

Afterwards Mr. Xin's family went to ask officers why he had been arrested but got no reply. When the family asked police officer Zhang Runqiu from the police group to return the confiscated money, Zhang said, "We did get over 1,000 yuan, but how can you prove the money is yours!"

In detention, Mr. Xin was subjected to many forms of torture including beatings and confinement in one location for long periods of time. He went on a hunger strike for 28 days to protest, but was brutally force-fed and tortured, which caused temporary paralysis of his arms and he could not take care of himself. Deputy police group leader Liu Jingyu ordered Mr. Xin's family to pay 20,000 yuan before releasing him. Unable to bear having their son suffer such brutal, inhuman torture, Mr. Xin's retired parents were forced to pay 20,000 yuan before picking up their dying son and taking him home. Nevertheless, police officers continued to monitor Xin Minduo very closely.

On August 3, 2005, several police officers knocked Mr. Xin Minduo down while he was riding a bicycle. About five officers stepped on his head, beat him up, and pushed him into a police car. To cover up their crimes, the officers told the bystanders they were arresting a robber. The police arrested many practitioners on false pretenses that day. Officers said, "This is the biggest case in the Northeast. Opportunities for our promotion have come." Apparently they had plotted the arrests for a long time.

One week later, after hearing that Xin Minduo had been arrested, police group leader Xu Hao told Mr. Xin's family that he was at the Panjin City Detention Center. Police officer Song Bo threatened and tricked Mr. Xin's family members into signing the arrest warrant. The same day that Mr. Xin was arrested, his wife Bao Juncen was also arrested at her neighbor's home. Her home was searched and she was detained at the Panjin City Detention Center. Police group leader Xu Hao and Zhang Runqiu broke in to Mr. Xin's home, took the refrigerator, washer, a bank deposit certificate, and over 11,000 yuan in cash. When his family went to ask the authorities to return the money and property, group leader Xu Hao said, "I did not see any money. If you have receipts for the appliances, you can take them back home."

The police officers did not make a list of items they took from Mr. Xin's home. They made a list several days later, but the list included many items that were not in Mr. Xin's apartment, and the cash amount was just 4,765 yuan. When his family said that the list was incorrect, the police officers said there was a signature on the list. When he looked at the signature, Mr. Xin's relative could tell that the signature was a fake. It is a crime for police officers to do this. Mr. Xin and his wife, together with Hu Zhehui and Hou Yunfei, went on a hunger strike to protest, but the police officers beat them and force-fed them brutally for over 40 days. The four practitioners became very weak and could not walk by themselves. But even then, they were frequently interrogated and then put on trial.

Trial Exposed Crimes of the Police and the Court

At about 8 a.m. on September 12, 2005, police cars and plainclothes and uniformed police officers filled the courtyard and the courtroom of the Xinlongtai District Court in Panjin City. Police officers Xu Hao, Zhang Runqiu, and Song Bo were walking around in front of the courthouse gate. There was an atmosphere of foreboding.

At about 9 a.m., police cars with their sirens on passed through the courtyard gate of the court. Mr. Xin Minduo and Mr. Hou Yunfei were dragged out of one car and moved to the second floor, each supported by two people. They were barefoot and Mr. Xin could not extend his legs. The two male practitioners had to lie down in the courtroom. Ms. Bao and Ms. Hu were also barefoot and had to be supported to go up or down the stairs. The two women were lying down in the courtroom, unable to sit up by themselves. Their relatives were heartbroken to see the practitioners' miserable condition.

The court ruled that anyone entering the court should show their IDs, be interrogated, and videotaped.

The defense counsels were assigned by the court without being interviewed by the practitioners or their families. The court and police officers threatened and pressured the defense to just go through the motions of defending their clients but were not allowed to enter a plea of innocence. After learning that the defending counsels were assigned by the court, the four practitioners said that they would defend themselves, but the court denied their requests. "Representation by counsel" was a sham. The defense counsel for Mr. Xin and Ms. Bao tried to do some actual defending.

After the public prosecutor finished speaking, Mr. Xin and Ms. Bao's attorney asked Mr. Xin, "Are there 1,100 copies of CDs and three master CDs in your home?" Mr. Xin answered, "No. What is a master copy?" Chief Judge Ma Li stopped Mr. Xin from saying more. Then the defense counsel asked, "Did you sign the itemized list?" Mr. Xin answered, "I have not written a single word since I was arrested." A police officer took the itemized list and showed it to Mr. Xin, who said, "This is not my writing." The officer then showed him an album and said there are pictures of the CDs. Mr. Xin said after looking at the picture, "The floor in my house is ceramic tile. These CDs are on a wooden floor."

When the public prosecutor claimed that Ms. Bao had been arrested seven times, she contested the statement. The fact is that when Ms. Bao was first arrested, she was detained for over three months and was fined over 4,000 yuan before she was released. But the court counted each 15-day period as one arrest and concluded that Ms. Bao had been arrested seven times and used this as a charge against her.

Those observing the trial and even some police officers were surprised by the "evidence" given, because it was a misrepresentation of the facts.

Though under pressure, the words of Mr. Xin's defense counsel made the police officers uneasy. Xu Hao and Zhang Runqiu left the court. During her final statement, Ms. Bao said in a weak voice, "I am innocent. Where are my refrigerator, washer, cash and deposits?" The chief judge said, "This has nothing to do with Falun Gong. Do not say this."

During the trial, only one practitioner was allowed in the courtroom at a time. Police officers dragged the four practitioners in and out of the court. The trail ended without verdicts being pronounced.

Seeing the great suffering of their loved ones and witnessing such unfair trials, the practitioners' family members were in tears.

Ms. Jia Xiulan, 68, Killed in a Brainwashing Class Held at Tangshan City Textile University

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Jia Xiulan was 68 years old. On August 31, 2005, she was illegally arrested by the authorities and locked in a brainwashing class held in Tangshan City Textile University. On September 4, people heard that Ms. Jia died due to an unclear cause. Many of her family members went to ask for an explanation, and the lawless authorities then paid forty thousand yuan as compensation to her family.

Ms. Jia Xiulan lived in Xinlizhuang Village, Xiangtang Town, Luan County, Hebei Province. She went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and clarify the truth, and was arrested and taken back by police from the Luan County Police Department. She was detained in the Luan County Detention Center. During her detention, a policeman from the First Office of the Luan County Police Department tortured Ms. Jia for five days, by Tying the Ropes (1) four times each day. Ms. Jia was tied up for a total of twenty times. She was beaten with thorn sticks, which made egg-sized welts on her body, and her arms were swollen thick, wide as bowls. Jia Xiulan was bleeding profusely and could not eat. She was released before the 2001 Chinese New Year (January 24, 2001). After being released home, Ms. Jia was constantly harassed by the local police.

On August 31, 2005, Ms. Jia Xiulan was abducted by personnel from Xiangtang Town and Guma Township when she was in her relative's home in Fengrun District, Tangshan City. Her husband was forced to accompany her to attend the brainwashing class held in Tangshan Textile University. Her family learned about her death on September 4, 2005. Details are under investigation.

    1. "Tying the Rope," one type of brutal torture, refers to putting a thin nylon rope around the back of a person's neck, and then wrapping it around both shoulders, down each arm loop by loop, and then over each hand. The rope is tightened to its limit and it cuts into the flesh. Both arms are forced behind the back and raised to the extreme, and then both thumbs are tied with a rope and locked to the rope that goes around the back of the neck. The person tortured in this way is then kicked and forced to kneel down on the floor. The rope is released about one hour later, and then the person is tied up like this again a second time, then a third time, and so on.

Falun Gong Practitioner Yang Xingzhe from Hebei Province Died Recently Due to Persecution

Ms. Yang Xingzhe, 38 years old, was a Falun Gong practitioner in Hebei Province. After the persecution started on July 20, 1999, the police often ransacked her home, extorted money from her and intimidated her. In 2001 Ms. Yang was illegally sentenced to two years of forced labor for distributing Falun Gong truth clarification materials and for hanging truth clarification banners. She was forced to do slave labor at the Balizhuang Forced Labor Camp in Baoding City and was also subjected to beatings and brainwashing. Ms. Yang had a cerebral hemorrhage and passed away on October 14, 2005.

High School Student Pressured to "Repent" for Clarifying the Facts about Falun Gong on an Examination Paper

Zhao Qiang, a 15-year-old high school student from Taihe County, Anhui Province, wrote the facts about the staged "self-immolation" incident on Tiananmen Square on his mid-term examination paper. As a result, the local 610 Office, police officers, and his school all persecuted him. They ransacked his home and pressured him to repent. To escape being arrested, his mother, a Falun Gong practitioner, was forced to leave home and move from place to place.

Zhao Qiang is a student at the No. 1 High School in Taihe County. As part of the mid-term examination, the students were asked to write an article to slander Falun Gong, based on the staged "self-immolation" incident on Tiananmen Square. It is reported that Zhao Qiang's parents practice Falun Gong, and his family has suffered long-term persecution. Therefore, Zhao Qiang has personal experience and a deep understanding of the persecution that Falun Gong practitioners have suffered over the years. During the examination, he wrote an essay entitled "Awaken," which revealed the truth about the staged "self-immolation" incident. In his essay, Zhao Qiang exposed the lies that the Chinese Communist Party fabricated about the incident.

Consequently, local agents launched a new round of persecution against Zhao Qiang's family. On the afternoon of September 27, 2005, Yang Dakuan, a police officer from the Taihe County Police Department, along with personnel from the Taihe County 610 Office, and Zhang Bingqin, an instructor from the police station, ransacked Zhao Qiang's home. When they did not find anything to incriminate the family, they, together with his schoolmaster and teacher, threatened him to get him to disclose the source of his information about the "self-immolation" incident. Moreover, they arranged to arrest Zhao Qiang's mother. They also threatened his uncle and his aunt. Zhao Qiang's mother was forced to leave home to escape being arrested.

Failing to arrest his mother, the agents increased the persecution against Zhao Qiang, repeatedly pressuring him to write a repentance statement and to state his so-called "understanding."

Seven Falun Gong Practitioners from Liaoning, Jilin and Hebei Provinces Pass Away Due to Persecution

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhu Yongzhen, 56 years old, lived in Xinbin County, Fushun City, Liaoning Province. Ms. Zhu benefited physically and mentally from practicing Falun Gong. Some of the chronic illnesses that had afflicted her for decades, such as myocarditis and stomach ulcer, disappeared completely. After April 25, 1999, when a large group of practitioners appealed for justice for Falun Gong at the Central Appeals Office in Beijing, she was persecuted by the government. Her breast hyperplasia suddenly developed into breast cancer, and Ms. Zhu passed away on February 6, 2003.

Practitioner Mr. Song Shutian, 60 years old, lived in Liuhe County, Jilin Province. He had protruding spinal disc(s), bone spurs and early stage lung cancer before he obtained Falun Gong in 1997. After he started practicing Falun Gong, however, his health fully recovered and he benefited physically and mentally. In 2001 he took truth clarification flyers to his hometown and was illegally arrested by police. He was sent to the Kuaida Detention Center in Tonghua County. The police ransacked his home and confiscated his Falun Gong books. Mr. Song was traumatized by constant harassment and threats from the police, and had a relapse of his old illnesses. He passed away in November 2002.

Practitioner Mr. Liu Zhenguo, 58 years old, was an employee of the Huabei Petroleum Corporation. He obtained Falun Gong in 1997. Mr. Liu recovered from heart disease through studying and practicing Falun Gong. In 2000 he was arrested for doing the Falun Gong exercises outdoors. The authorities extorted 3,000 yuan from him. Police officers from the petroleum company often harassed M. Liu. He developed lung cancer and passed away on May 4, 2005.

Practitioner Mr. Li Shiying, 58 years old, worked at Huabei Petroleum. He had severe stomach disease prior to obtaining Falun Gong in January 1998, and became healthy through Falun Gong practice. After July 20, 1999, when the persecution of Falun Gong started, perpetrators from the Retirement Committee at Huabei Petroleum phoned him and went to his home many times to harass him. He lost the undisturbed environment to practice Falun Gong and passed away on July 9, 2004.

Practitioner Ms. Jiang Guilan, 68 years old, was the family member of an official who worked for Comprehensive Division 6 at Huabei Petroleum. Ms. Jiang had serious lung disease before practicing Falun Gong. The doctors said she could not be treated because of the severity of the condition. After she started practicing Falun Gong in 1996, Teacher cleansed her body many times and she fully recovered. After July 20, 1999, perpetrators from the police department and the street Party Committee harassed her at her home many times. As a result, Ms. Jiang was unable to do the Falun Gong exercises. She suffered a relapse of the lung disease and passed away in 2004.

Practitioner Ms. Li Lin, around 60 years of age, lived in Changchun City, Jilin Province. On May 13, 2001, she was arrested when handing out truth clarification materials. She was detained at several places, including the Changchun City Police Department. More than 15 days later, the police extorted over 10,000 yuan from her daughter before releasing her. Ms. Lin was physically tortured and mentally tormented during the incarceration. She passed away several months after her release.

Practitioner Ms. Ou Mizhi, 82 years old, lived in Beipiao City, Liaoning Province. She previously had many illnesses, including emphysema, tuberculosis and stomach disease. All of them were cured some time after she started practicing Falun Gong in 1998. On July 20, 1999, Ms. Ou set off for Beijing with the goal of validating Falun Gong. She was intercepted midway and sent back to Beipiao City. Her daughter, also a Falun Gong practitioner, was abducted and illegally detained many times by the authorities. The police ransacked her home numerous times. The perpetrators smashed the metal gate of her home, traumatizing Ms. Ou Mizhi. She never fully recovered from the shock. Her daughter was later illegally sentenced to four years in prison. Ms. Ou passed away on September 10, 2005.

The Brutal Persecution Suffered by Falun Gong Practitioner Ms. Peng Darong

Ms. Peng Darong is a Falun Gong practitioner from Dazhou City, Sichuan Province. After the persecution of Falun Gong started, at the end of 1999, she went to Beijing to clarify the facts and appeal for Falun Gong. After Ms. Peng was "arrested" on Tiananmen Square, she was sent to a detention center in Anping County, Hebei Province. Because she refused to tell the police her home address, they beat her viciously. They then poured a bottle of cold water down her neck. When she still refused to tell them her home address, the police took out pliers, forced her mouth open, and pulled out her teeth. They wouldn't even let her wipe off the blood from her mouth.

One policeman held her head and punched her in the face. When he got tired, he found a wooden stick and started to hit her around the spleen, liver, chest and abdominal areas until the stick broke. He also spun her around while holding her collar, and then slammed her into a chair. The police tore apart Falun Gong books and forced Ms. Peng to step on them. After the beating, they threatened to throw her into a very deep ditch and leave her there. Ms. Peng still refused to tell them anything. So the police took turns beating and kicking her. As a result, Peng Darong had injuries all over her body and she couldn't eat solid food. She had to soak buns in soup and just swallow. The police used various methods to torture Ms. Peng for 24 hours straight. At night, the police took turns resting while Peng Darong was tortured. Finally the police gave up, because Peng Darong maintained righteous thoughts, and quietly recited Falun Gong throughout the torture.

On January 5, 2000, Peng Darong left the detention center with the help of friends and family, and joined her husband in Shanglin County, Xi'an City, Shanxi Province. At that time, many Falun Gong banners were found in the area. Because Ms. Peng had just moved there, the local officials arrested her again. The security section head of the Shanglin County Detention Center, Gao Lei, was particularly virulent in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. He extorted money from families of practitioners and would not release anyone unless paid.

On December 23, 2002, Peng Darong was sent to Zizhong City Women's Forced Labor Camp in Sichuan Province, where she suffered from all kinds of inhuman treatment and witnessed the brutal persecution of other Falun Gong practitioners. This labor camp is a living hell. Among all the guards, squadron captain Zhang Xiaofang of the No. 7 Squadron is the most vicious in persecuting practitioners. In the middle of winter, she forced female practitioners to take off their pants and stand in the piercing cold wind. She tied practitioners' legs in the double lotus position with ropes and shocked them with electric batons. She would not let practitioners use the toilet. There was one practitioner who could not speak loud enough to ask permission to use the toilet. Her whole body shook as she tried to hold back the urine, and eventually she lost control. Another practitioner, Ms. Fu Liqiong, suddenly passed out. She was sent to the hospital and her blood pressure was found to be over 200. The doctor found a big lump in her lower abdominal area. As it turned out, she had not urinated for several days. The doctors inserted a tube into her bladder to relieve the pressure; but after she got back from the hospital the guards instructed criminal inmates to beat her and injured her liver. Then she was locked in a small room. The authorities taped pieces of paper displaying slanderous words on her body.

Guard Zhang Xiaofang tormented Falun Gong practitioners and insulted Falun Gong's founder and Falun Gong practitioners. She also humiliated practitioners by tying bowls and food in front of their chests or behind their buttocks.

The Experiences of Two Women from Rural Shandong Province

    1. The persecution that Ms. Zang Yuncong suffered when she went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong

Ms. Zang Yuncong, 49 years old, is from Zhucheng, Shandong Province. She has practiced Falun Gong for eight years and is physically and mentally healthy. After July 20, 1999, when the persecution of Falun Gong began, she went to Beijing with another practitioner from the same village to appeal and to clarify the truth about Falun Gong. The police arrested her at Gaomi and escorted her back to her hometown. They detained her in the Wangjiatun School for seven days. None of her family members were informed of her whereabouts.

CCP Secretary Zang Puyun, policeman Sun and the district administrator, Li Jianxin searched her house and took away her Falun Gong books. They also threatened and constantly watched her relatives and family members. While in detention, Ms. Zang and her fellow practitioner were forced to watch TV programs that slandered Falun Gong. They were forced to swear against Falun Gong and write "guarantee statements" promising that they would "stop practicing," and that they would not appeal anymore. The two of them were monitored by a dozen persons, including the deputy CCP secretary Wang Yong, the head of Public Security Wang Xuexiang, and the head of Female Affairs, Fan Jirong. The practitioners were forced to work on farms without pay, but had to pay for their own keep. CCP secretary Chen Jiazhi from the Political and Judiciary Office said, "Fine them! If they don't have money, take the food supplies from their families. We won't let them have anything to eat or drink."

Because of the persecution, the local Falun Gong practitioners could not live in peace. One day, Sun from the police station, Wang Xueyang and Party secretary Zang Puyun from the local police station came to Ms. Zang's residence to conduct a search. Sun said if they found more Falun Gong books, they would handle Ms. Zang more viciously. Yet, after they ransacked the whole place they failed to find anything.

On October 1, 2000, Ms. Zang went to Beijing to appeal again for justice for Falun Gong. She wanted to explain why Falun Dafa is good. The police at Tiananmen Square arrested her. Among the practitioners arrested were senior citizens, young people and children, but they all shouted out from the bottom of their hearts, "Falun Dafa is great!" The police beat and kicked the practitioners. Some of them were so severely injured that they lay on the ground with their blood flowing. Some of their clothes were torn. Onlookers pointed out that those plainclothes policemen concealed metal weights inside their gloves, making the beatings even more severe. The perpetrators also used electric batons to shock the practitioners. The police loaded the practitioners into vehicles and then took them to a cordoned-off location to register them.

It was already afternoon when Ms. Zang Yuncong was taken to a prison. The Beijing police threatened that if she ever again went to Beijing to appeal, she would have nothing to eat and drink in the future; her children would not be allowed to go to school; she would not live a normal life and her family would be broken apart. The police also verbally abused her. Finally they asked her, "Will you come to appeal again?" Ms. Zang replied, "If such a good cultivation method is still treated unfairly, I will come again, for sure."

That evening, Ms. Zang was taken to the Shandong Liaison Office in Beijing. She was locked up in the basement where many other practitioners were detained. Some personnel from the practitioners' local counties, cities or from their work units later escorted them back to Shandong Province. On October 3, Ms. Zang was escorted back to Zhucheng and detained for a month on a trumped-up criminal charge. Within a few days, one of the Falun Gong practitioners there was tortured to death. The other Falun Gong practitioners went on a 20-day hunger strike in protest. Ms. Zang was released, but she had to pay 300 yuan for her daily living expenses.

After her return home, the police came by to harass Ms. Zang every day. They also monitored her activities. In 2001, Zang Yuncong was forced to attend a brainwashing session and was pressured to write guarantee statements, "stopping Falun Gong practice," and "stopping appeals." In addition, she was forced to watch TV programs that defamed and lied about Falun Gong. They threatened that if she refused to be "reformed" she would be sent to a forced labor camp.

On October 18, 2002, it was the time for harvest. The Female Affairs head, Fan Jirong, requested that Ms. Zang go to the office. As soon as Ms. Zang sat down, about seven or eight people came in and tried to arrest her and take her to a brainwashing session. Ms. Zang refused to cooperate. She said, "There is nothing wrong with practicing Falun Gong and with being a good person." They still forced her into the brainwashing session. She had only one shirt on. A sudden cold front came, so she worried that the ginger roots that she planted would be frozen in the ground. Ms. Zang asked to go home to change clothes and harvest the ginger roots. When Zang Yuncong returned home on October 25, her husband beat her.

    2. Ms. Zhang Zhaohong was tortured because she went to Beijing three times to appeal for justice for Falun Gong

Ms. Zhang Zhaohong is from Xinhua Village, Chengguan Town in Zhucheng City. She has been practicing Falun Gong for eight years now. Prior to taking up the practice she was very stubborn and had a bad temper. She was easily angered and often cursed others. These bad habits troubled her all the time. When she heard that Falun Gong could change all of a person's bad characteristics, she decided to practice Falun Gong. As a result, her temper gradually changed for the better. Once she did something that wasn't right; as a result, she injured her foot and some of the bones in her right foot were dislocated. Ms. Zhang realized that she had done something wrong. She made up her mind to follow Falun Gong practitioners' standards and to do everything well. Therefore, in the evenings, she would endure severe discomfort when doing the sitting meditation with her legs in the lotus position. Three times, she heard a slight sound coming from the bones in her foot. The bones naturally resumed their normal positions. After three days, her foot totally recovered. The power of Falun Gong amazed her.

On July 20, 1999, when Falun Gong was under nationwide persecution, Zhang Zhaohong was heartbroken. Teacher asks practitioners to be good people; was there anything wrong with that? Teacher also conveys to practitioners in his lectures that practitioners should not kill. Hence, she knew that the TV shows and newspaper articles sponsored by the government were not true. They were meant to slander Falun Gong. To help people know the truth about Falun Gong and not let them be deceived by the lies, Ms. Zhang started to "clarify the truth" about Falun Gong. She told people that Falun Gong is for improving a person's character and moral standard so that they become a better person after practicing.

On October 14, the police called Ms. Zhang and asked her to come to the Chengguan Local Police Station. The police asked her if she still practiced Falun Gong. Zhang Zhaohong said yes. Police officer Cao Jinhui scolded her loudly and put her in handcuffs. Headed by Cao Jinhui, three policemen took her and went to her village Council Office. After that, personnel from that office went to her residence and searched her home, without going through any legal procedures.

In the evening, Cao Jinhui, who was very drunk, ordered the others to use electric batons to shock her. Cao Jinhui also beat Ms. Zhang severely and struck her hard on the face. Furthermore, Cao hit her head against the wall. As a result, Ms. Zhang's head was injured and swollen in several places. After that, Cao kicked her legs and feet. He kicked her ribs, which caused her severe pain. This time, Zhang Zhaohong was detained for a month. After that, the Village Council members threatened that if she continued to practice Falun Gong they would not let her nephew go to school, they would not issue her brother a permit for having a second child, and they would cut the power and water supply to her residence. Furthermore, they would keep monitoring her.

Ms. Zhang decided to go to Beijing again to tell the national government officials that they should treat Falun Gong fairly. On February 7, 2000, she went to Beijing. On February 8, she could not find the Appeals Office; therefore, she went to Tiananmen Square to practice Falun Gong. Because of that, Ms. Zhang was arrested and sent to the Weifang Liaison Office in Beijing, which was filled with Falun Gong practitioners who had come to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong. They confiscated almost all of their money, but Ms. Zhang still had about 200 yuan on her that the authorities had not found.

After she was brought back to Zhucheng, many people scolded and kicked her. Cao Jinhui grabbed her 200 yuan. After that, Cao used a rubber club to beat Ms. Zhang heavily. Her legs and her hips turned dark purple.

Once again Ms. Zhang was detained for another month. Many practitioners were then detained. They started a joint hunger strike to protest the persecution. As a result, the perpetrators ripped off the practitioners' clothes and forced them to stand outside in winter weather when it was snowing heavily.

A month later, Ms. Zhang was escorted to the village Council Office and detained in a room with only one stool inside. She was forbidden to sleep for several days and nights. One night, a female committee member brought her older brother and forced her brother to beat Ms. Zhang severely. To protest the Village Council's detaining her, Ms. Zhang started a hunger strike. When she was released she found out that the power supply to her home had been cut a long time ago. In order to clarify the truth of Falun Gong, Zhang Zhaohong went to Beijing to appeal three times.

The Torture Suffered by Zheng Ying at Jiangshuiquan Women's Labor Camp

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zheng Ying, from Jinan, was arrested on May 4, 2005 because she was promoting Falun Gong. Fellow practitioner Zhu Yuezhen was arrested along with her. Zheng Ying was sent to the Jinan Liuchangshan Detention Center. She refused to cooperate with the unreasonable demands of the officers so they tied her on a death bed for four days and four nights. Zheng Ying's four limbs were stretched out and tied to the corners of the icy-cold metal bed. She could not move at all. Neither was she allowed to get up to eat, drink, or to go to the bathroom for four days. The torture injured her mentally and physically. They released Ms. Zheng only after her body was swollen and numb. They said they wouldn't have released her if not for her advanced age. While in the Jinan Detention Center, Zheng Ying was on a hunger strike the whole time to protest her unlawful detention, and continued to practice the Falun Gong exercises. None of the perpetrator's tricks worked on her, and she firmly refused to renounce Falun Gong.

On June 3, the 610 Office director, Li Dongfeng, and police officer Xu Hui took Zheng Ying to the Jinan Jiangshuiquan Women's Labor Camp. Zheng Ying was very weak at that point, but the prison guards handcuffed her to the radiator for a day. To protest the persecution, on the second day in the labor camp, Zheng Ying wrote a letter to the State Department and National People's Congress to expose her situation.

The perpetrators left Ms. Zheng tied to the radiator with a belt and wouldn't let her have any water or use the restroom. They kept her there for months, until September 7, releasing her only a few brief times in between.

During this time, Zheng Ying would shout out, "Falun Dafa is wonderful!" The prison guards then took turns slapping her across the face and even taped her mouth shut.

By September, Ms. Zheng was tortured beyond recognition. Her body became purple and blue and was covered with pus. Her skin was very itchy. The prison guards let those that betrayed Falun Gong as well as some other prisoners apply some ointment to her wounds. Her swollen face was covered with mucus and tears. Feeding tubes were placed into her nose, and a piece of cloth tied back her disheveled hair .

Zheng Ying's family members (non-practitioners) became very worried when they learned of her condition. They wanted to get her out, but the labor camp asked them for 10,000 yuan for medical expenses. The evil perpetrators continuously tried to force Ms. Zheng to give up practicing Falun Gong, but Zheng Ying told them, "Now, more than ever, I understand that Falun Dafa is valuable. I won't give it up even if you point a gun to my head."

On September 7, 2005, Zheng Ying was finally released from Jiangshuiquan Women's Labor Camp. By this time, she was very weak.

Steadfast Practitioners Persecuted at Masanjia Forced Labor Camp

Since the spring of 2005, in protest of the persecution, Falun Gong practitioners illegally detained in the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp have refused to participate in the forced labor. The chief of the forced labor camp went into the practitioners' cells with a gang of people at 10 o'clock one evening and started to beat the practitioners. Some practitioner's hair was pulled out. Sixty practitioners who refused to wear prison uniforms or were on a hunger strike were dragged from their cells to a storage area, where several male police guards tortured them. Their heads, faces and mouths were beaten very badly, and the wounds on their bodies festered.

The newly arrived practitioners at Masanjia are sent to the Third Group for intense brainwashing. Collaborators are instructed by the group leader to brainwash them with fallacious theories based on some deliberately distorted interpretations of Falun Gong teachings. Usually, several collaborators attack one practitioner at a time. If the practitioners do not renounce their belief after several months of brainwashing, the collaborators will threaten them. If they are still firm in their belief, the staff members will give up on them. All kinds of tactics are used during the brainwashing process.

To protest the persecution, the practitioners from the First Group refused to obey the rules and demands of the forced labor camp. As a result they are not allowed to leave their cells. They have no freedom, and they are not allowed family visits. Some practitioners have not seen their family members since they entered the forced labor camp, so their family members do not know how badly they have been treated. The staff members force-feed the practitioners who are on hunger strikes for a long time with corn gruel one or two times daily. They do not really care whether the practitioners die or not and they use the brutal force-feeding as a way to torture them. The money that practitioner's family members leave for their daily use is taken as a "fee" for the force-feedings.

The forced labor camp blocks information from leaving its walls. They threaten and cheat the steadfast practitioners. The guards, other staff members and collaborators never tell the truth to practitioners. They illegally extend practitioners' terms for up to one year. The extensions are based on the reports from the staff and the collaborators, and it doesn't matter whether they are true or not.

The collaborators, who are instructed to monitor the practitioners when their family members come to visit, are actively involved in the persecution. If a practitioner says, "Falun Dafa is good," his or her term will be extended. If the practitioners do not follow orders, the collaborators will report them and the practitioners will be punished. Some practitioners are sent to small isolation cells, some are beaten by the police guards, some are locked up in the restroom, some are handcuffed to heating pipes, and some are denied sleep for several days, sometimes up to seven days. During that time, practitioners are forced to remain standing and cannot close their eyes, sit or squat. Some practitioners who have been persecuted for extended periods of time experience total body edema, but that does not stop the forced labor camp from continuing to persecute them.

Deputy Director of the 610 Office in Sanhe City, Hebei Province, Personally Led a Raid on Falun Gong Practitioners

On the morning of October 9, 2005, the police conducted a raid on practitioners in Sanhe City, Hebei Province. A few practitioners were detained, but most of them managed to escape with the help of their family members or the people around them who already knew the truth about Falun Gong. The police detained Ms. Guo Chunying and Ms. Xue Shuqing, a nurse and an anesthetist respectively, who both work at the Sanhe City Hospital. They were both sent to a brainwashing center in Langfang City. It has been reported that Wang Haibin, Deputy Director of the 610 Office of Sanhe City, went in person to "illegally arrest" these two practitioners.

Around 10 a.m. on October 9, when Ms. Xue Shuqing, a 42-year-old practitioner and employee of the Sanhe City Hospital, was leaving her workplace, several plainclothes officers from the 610 Office tried to grab her and take her away without identifying themselves. She refused to cooperate with the abduction. They then knocked her down and dragged her to a waiting police car. Her colleague, Ms. Guo Chunying, a 43-year-old practitioner, was picked up as well while she was still at work in the hospital. The police rushed at her, dragging, pulling, kicking and beating her in full view of the public. Ms. Xue and Ms. Guo were both sent to the brainwashing center in Langfang.

The brainwashing center is located at the Jiaotong Hotel in Langfang. At the hotel, each practitioner was locked in a separate room. They were not allowed to sleep and were under surveillance 24 hours a day. Each practitioner was "accompanied" by two staff members from his or her work unit, who were assigned as monitors. Practitioners were isolated from the outside world. During working hours, two former practitioners who had been "transformed" through brainwashing bombarded the practitioners with lies and warped theories, attempting to force these kind-hearted people who live according to the principles of "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance" to give up Falun Gong. They tried to force practitioners to become their accomplices and work to "transform" others.

To protest the persecution, many Falun Gong practitioners have gone on hunger strikes, but the perpetrators brutally force-feed them. Some of the practitioners died as a result of the force-feeding. As long as they were in the brainwashing center, the practitioners run the risk of losing their lives.

According to verified sources, Wang Haibin, Deputy Director of the 610 Office in Sanhe City, commanded the raid against Xue Shuqing and Guo Chunying in person. The reason they conducted this raid was that they found truth clarification materials in the family compound of the hospital and outside the door of Wang Haibin's house.

For several years, Wang Haibin had been the Deputy Director of the 610 Office. His wife, Ma Qingrong, was the director of the Fees and Charges Department at the hospital. She used to practice Falun Gong but gave up after the persecution of Falun Gong started. They are fully aware that Falun Gong is good and causes no harm to the people or the country, and that Falun Gong practitioners all live their lives according to the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance.
