(Minghui.org) A 72-year-old woman in Chongqing was taken into custody on June 8, 2026, to serve a five-year term she was given in 2021 for her faith in Falun Gong. Ms. Hu Kaijun’s incapacitated husband was sent to a nursing home following her imprisonment.
The ordeal of Ms. Hu, a retired employee of the Ninth Construction Company of the Chongqing Wanzhou District General Construction Company, stemmed from her initial arrest on July 17, 2020. She was held at a brainwashing center for 12 days and released on a one-year bail. The Kaizhou District Court sentenced her to five years with a 15,000-yuan fine on December 28, 2021. She appealed to the Chongqing Second Intermediate Court, which months later ruled to uphold her original verdict. She continued to appeal to the Chongqing High Court, which also denied her on an unknown date.
Ms. Hu’s husband was diagnosed with late-stage throat cancer in 2014. His larynx was surgically removed and he can no longer talk. He also needs a special diet. Due to his condition, they had a hard time finding him a good caregiver, so Ms. Hu had been caring for him. Ms. Hu’s arrest and sentencing were very hard on him, and his condition worsened. He lost the ability to chew and can only drink fluids.
Having targeted Ms. Hu repeatedly for her faith in Falun Gong, the local authorities knew her family situation well. In order to make her agree to report to prison after her latest appeal was denied, they made various promises about her husband’s care. When that did not work, they froze all of her bank accounts and her WeChat payment account, the main payment system used in China.
On June 8, 2026, while Ms. Hu was accompanying her husband to the hospital for an exam, staffers from the Kaizhou District Court showed up and arrested her without informing her husband where they were taking her.
After Mr. Hu’s husband returned home, the street committee arranged to send him to a nursing home.
Prior to her latest sentence, Ms. Hu was given a one-year term at the Chongqing City Women’s Forced Labor Camp in October 2010.
