(Minghui.org) A 69-year-old woman in Shanghai has been detained for over 14 months for practicing Falun Gong. The police refused to provide a copy of the arrest or detention warrant to her family, despite their repeated requests.
Ms. Xu Nixia was arrested at her home on May 13, 2025, by officers from the Baoshan District Domestic Security Office. She has since been held at the Baoshan District Detention Center.
To avoid accountability for Ms. Xu’s arrest, the Baoshan District Domestic Security Office and the Songnan Police Station mailed an empty envelope to her family and claimed to have informed them of her arrest.
Ms. Xu’s family managed to find out from the post office that the police station had sent a registered letter to them on June 19, 2026. An officer affirmed that the registered letter was recorded in their system as “having notified the suspect’s family in accordance with the law.”
Without an official arrest warrant, Ms. Xu’s family was not allowed to send her clothes or other items. They protested, and the detention center eventually allowed them to deliver clothes to Ms. Xu. However, the police still refused to provide a copy of the notice of arrest.
Ms. Xu is now facing trial by the Jing’an District Court. When her lawyer went to the court to review the case documents, he requested the audio and video recordings from the interrogation after her arrest. He was told that the recorder was “broken” during the interrogation.
After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Xu has been repeatedly arrested for upholding her faith. She was sentenced twice for a total of seven years.
