My Understanding of Forbearance

March 19, 2026 |   By a Dafa practitioner from China

(Minghui.org) I would like to share my new understanding of the following Fa teaching.

“Student: In terms of the word “Ren” in the universe’s nature of Zhen-Shan-Ren, it’s easy to understand in human society, but there are no disputes or conflicts at higher levels, so why is there also a need for Ren? Why does the universe need Ren?

Master: This universe is not like what you understand it to be—it is a rather complicated, gigantic system. In addition to the existence of this tangible human race, formless human races also exist. With the dimensions we have been talking about, in high-level dimensions, they also have problems at their levels. I can tell you that in many remote places, those with bodies like our human race exist… there are quite a lot with such physical bodies and they are scattered all over the entire universe. And there are different enlightened beings at different levels, and social relationships among them also exist. There are such forms of existence at even higher levels, and the Ren that you understand is based on the understanding of it through human thinking. Ren also has higher inner meanings. How can things go on without it? If you try to understand this Dafa from a human perspective, it can’t be done at all.” (“Teaching the Fa and Answering Questions in Yanji,” Explaining the Teachings of Zhuan Falun)

I did not fully comprehend this passage from Master’s teachings in the past. Since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began persecuting Falun Gong, I have long suffered. I had to go to the city as a janitor. The persecution extended to my work place. In the past, I would point out and expose the persecution. But due to my attachments, it often led to negative consequences. I then try to endure it, though I feel angry and resentful internally. Knowing this state is wrong, I send forth righteous thoughts to eliminate my anger and resentment. I feel that I haven’t reached the standard of a cultivator.

Looking inward, I realized that it stemmed from my human notions. I was a gifted student in school, but grew up being abused by my family. I learned that as long as I was obedient, I could maintain a superficially peaceful life. This instilled in me a habit of forbearance from a young age, which later developed into what I perceived as a superior character, not competing with those who bullied me and feeling exceptionally refined. This mindset unconsciously carried over into my cultivation practice, leading me to mistakenly believe that I possessed high moral character. But in reality, I was filled with resentment and not following a cultivator’s standard.

Digging deeper, I found that my anger stemmed from human attachments such as a desire for fame and benefit, a pursuit of perfection, a wish for others to praise my work, a fear of criticism and losing my job, an attachment to comfort, and a fear of hardship and loss.

Master says,

“Forbearance is the key to improving one’s xinxing. To endure with anger, grievance, or tears is the forbearance of an everyday person who is attached to his concerns. To endure completely without anger or grievance is the forbearance of a cultivator.” (“What is Forbearance (Ren)?” Essentials For Further Advancement)

I realized that the forbearance of higher realms requires that one not form personal preconceived notions within one’s own level. With that understanding, when I saw the deliberate damage at work, I simply tried my best to do things well. I no longer worried about how my supervisors or others would react.

Fellow practitioners’ experience-sharing has encouraged me to share my own experience. This is my personal understanding. Please point out anything inappropriate.
