A married couple in Langfang City, Hebei Province, faced constant harassment since 2023 for their shared faith in Falun Gong. Mr. Zhao Zhenqi, a veteran, was dealt a heavy blow when his wife, Ms. Fu Xinhua, was sentenced to one year on December 9, 2024. His health quickly declined and he passed away on March 21, 2025. He was 62.
Mr. Zhao and his wife began practicing Falun Gong in September 2006. His severe heart condition soon disappeared, and his wife recovered from erosive gastritis and rheumatism.
On May 26, 2023, six officers from the Anci District Domestic Security Office and the Beishijiawu Police Station broke into the couple’s home. One was in tactical gear, three were in police uniform, and two in plainclothes. They ransacked the home and took the couple to the Beishijiawu Police Station.
The police interrogated the couple in separate rooms. They showed Mr. Zhao the interrogation record and ordered him to sign it. But before he did it, they said there was a mistake and produced another document. He noted that the new document had the word “suspect,” and refused to sign.
The couple were held at the police station overnight and then taken to a police hospital for physical exams the next morning. Mr. Zhao was deemed unfit for detention due to a health condition, and was released on bail. Ms. Fu was detained for 18 days. The police constantly harassed her and her husband after she was released.
Ms. Fu was forcibly taken to the Anci District Court to stand trial on December 9, 2024. The judge sentenced her to one year with a 1,000-yuan fine. The police drove her to a local detention center, which declined to admit her after she was found to have high blood pressure. She was released in the evening. Ms. Fu soon filed an appeal against the wrongful sentencing.
Since then, officers from the Beishijiawu Police Station and Longhe Police Station took turns harassing the couple every day, sometimes taking Ms. Fu away for interrogation or physical exams.
Each time Ms. Fu was taken away, Mr. Zhao feared that she might not return home. Under the severe mental strain, his health quickly deteriorated, and he passed away on March 21, 2025.
Five days after Mr. Zhao’s passing, the Langfang City Intermediate Court ruled to uphold Ms. Fu’s original verdict, without a hearing.
