Mr. Nan Yongsheng, of Yongning County, Yinchuan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, passed away on June 18, 2023, after enduring non-stop arrests and harassment because he practiced Falun Gong. He was in his 60s.

Mr. Nan, who was disabled, was repeatedly targeted after the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999. He was arrested on March 25, 2005, and detained at the Ningxia Brainwashing Center for a month. He was arrested again in 2006 and detained for ten days at the Yongning County Detention Center for distributing Falun Gong materials. He was taken back into custody at the Yongning County Detention Center on June 4, 2007, and later released when the police were unable to find evidence to frame him. After he was arrested on August 31, 2016, he was detained for ten days. The police photographed him, collected a blood sample, and took his fingerprints.

Mr. Nan’s last arrest was during a police sweep on September 19, 2019, while he was still working at the Yongning County Civil Affairs Bureau. Over 50 police officers were dispatched to arrest him and 12 other practitioners. His home and office were searched.

Shortly after he was released, he applied for retirement. Yet the police and residential committee staff members kept harassing him. He was unable to live a normal life. He began experiencing some medical conditions and passed away on June 18, 2023.

In addition to Mr. Nan, seven other practitioners in Yongning County also died in the persecution of Falun Gong since 2000.

Ms. Liu Haolian was devasted when the persecution started in July 1999. She died in 2000. She was in her 50s.

Mr. Li Baoshan, a former employee of the Yongning County Glass Factory, was given a heavy workload after the persecution started, despite his severe medical conditions. He died in 2001. He was around 60.

Ms. Yang Xiufang, a retired employee of the Yongning County Fishing Farm, was terribly distressed when the persecution started. She passed away in 2001. She was around 50.

Mr. Wu Xinge, a retired employee of Yongning County Film Company, was given one year of forced labor in 2001 for distributing Falun Gong materials. The police continued to harass him after he was released. He died in August 2013. He was around 55.

Mr. Yao Qinghai, a retired official of the Yongning County Forest Bureau, was arrested in 2002 and held in the Yongning County Detention Center. He was later given a 1.5-year term at the Baitugangzi Forced Labor Camp. To avoid police harassment after he was released, he moved in with his daughter in Shanghai. He passed away there in 2014. He was around 70.

Mr. Xie Nanfang was arrested on September 19, 2019 during the same police sweep as Mr. Nan. Mr. Xie passed away on February 28, 2020 while being held at the Yinchuan City Detention Center. He was 64. The authorities threatened his family not to disclose information about his death. On May 20, 2020, nearly three months after he died, the Xixia District Procuratorate notified his family that they were dismissing his case.

Mr. Ren Chuntian, a retired bank employee, was also arrested on September 19, 2019, together with his wife, Ms. Chen Shuhui. Although they were soon released on bail due to their advanced age, the authorities kept harassing them at home or over the phone. Mr. Ren became depressed and lost his appetite. He took a fall in May 2020 and died weeks later. Prior to his last arrest, he was seized by the police in 2002 and given a three-year labor camp term. He was allowed to serve time at home, but faced constant police harassment and home ransacking.
