Ms. Liu Yuzhen, of Chongqing, passed away on August 26, 2013, after suffering years of persecution for practicing Falun Gong. She was 62 years old.

Ms. Liu was first arrested in December 2000 and detained for 12 days. Staffers from the Qianjiang District Court attempted to force her to denounce Falun Gong. She refused to comply and was released.

Ms. Liu was arrested again on October 25, 2001, and later sentenced to three years for distributing Falun Gong flyers.

A group of officers broke into Ms. Liu’s home on January 22, 2010 and raided her place. Her Falun Gong books, informational materials, portrait of Falun Gong’s founder, an MP4 player, and phone book were confiscated. The police also took photos of her home.

After she was taken to the Zhengyang Lockup, she wasn’t allowed to use the restroom. She was transferred to the Xianfeng Prison the next morning. The police beat her and knocked her teeth out. Her body became severely swollen and was covered with bruises. She was released on bail on February 8.

Ms. Liu’s health began to decline as a result of the repeated arrests and detention. Yet the authorities accused her of pretending, and forced her to take blood pressure pills. She was taken back into custody on June 1 and sent to the Chongqing Women’s Prison the next day. The guards starved her for two days, while keeping her handcuffed. Due to her persistent high blood pressure, the prison refused to keep her, and she was sent back home.

Ms. Liu was tried by the Qianjiang District Court on April 27, 2011. It’s not clear whether she was sentenced.

Succumbing to the persecution, she fell critically ill. She was hospitalized on August 25, 2013, and passed away the next day.
