60-Year-Old Liaoning Woman Sentenced to 3.5 Years for Practicing Falun Gong

Jan. 31, 2025 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Liaoning Province, China

(Minghui.org) A 60-year-old woman in Dandong City, Liaoning Province, was sentenced to 3.5 years with a 5,000-yuan fine for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Zheng Guixiang was arrested on June 18, 2024, for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was held at the Dandong City Lockup before being transferred to the Dandong City Detention Center on July 4, 2024, when she was put on criminal detention. She was issued the arrest warrant on August 9 and convicted on December 25, 2024.

This isn’t the first time that Ms. Zheng has been targeted for her faith, which she credited for enabling her to recover from various ailments, including gastritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and uterine fibroids.

For using currency bills with information about Falun Gong printed on them (as a way to raise awareness about the persecution given the strict censorship in China), Ms. Zheng was arrested on July 26, 2013, by Zhanqian Police Station officers. Her cellphone and nearly 3,000 yuan in cash were confiscated. During her 15-day detention at the Dandong City Lockup, the police interrogated her three times while restraining her in a metal chair. The lockup director and several police officers deceived her into signing her name on a piece of blank paper. When she later realized that the police intended to try to prosecute, she went into hiding for a period of time.

Ms. Zheng was arrested again on November 20, 2019, also for talking to people about Falun Gong. She appeared in the Zhen’an District Court on June 12, 2020, and was sentenced to ten months with a 2,000-yuan fine.
