Not long after the persecution of Falun Gong began in July 1999, Mr. Su Shizhong, a resident of Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, was seized at work by captain Shang Ping from the local domestic security division and officers Li Yajun, Zhu Yong, Pang Hui, Dong Hui, and Meng Jianhua from the local police station. They took him home to raid his place. His son cried non-stop when the police threatened to arrest the boy as well. 

Mr. Su was taken away in front of his wife and son, which deeply traumatized him. The police kept him at the police station overnight before transferring him to the Xuanhua Detention Center the next day. They later gave him an unknown term for forced labor and took him to the Shijiazhuang Labor Camp.

Team lead Zhang Li forced Mr. Su to squat from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day for twenty straight days. Sometimes Zhang even had an inmate sit on the back of Mr. Su. He developed necrosis (nerve damage) in his legs as a result. After the squatting torture, he was made to do hard labor even though he walked with a limp. The task included using toxic glue to make paper bags. He often sneezed, coughed, and shed tears because of the glue. 

By the time he was released nine months later, his left eye had completely gone blind and his right eye had limited vision. He was barely able to walk on his own. 

Despite his health damage, the police and local community workers still harassed him frequently. The endless persecution eventually claimed his life on October 3, 2021. He was 56.
