Mr. Liu Wei, the former guard at Zaohua Prison in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, was given a one-year forced labor term in 1999 and sentenced to five years in 2001 for practicing Falun Gong. He passed away on November 24, 2018. He was 59.

Mr. Liu began to practice Falun Gong in 1995. He went to Beijing twice in November 1999 to appeal for the right to practice and was given one year in the Yinjia Forced Labor Camp.

Mr. Liu was arrested at work on May 23, 2001. He was whipped with a leather belt and shoe, beaten with wooden stick, and shocked with electric batons. He became blind in one eye and almost blind in the other.

Because Mr. Liu refused to renounce Falun Gong, he was held in solitary confinement and handcuffed every day for over a year and a half. He was extremely weak and had systemic edema and difficulty walking. Once a big, strong man, he was reduced to skins and bones.

Mr. Liu was later sentenced to five years and fired from his job. He first served time in Dongling Prison and was then transferred to Nanhuayuan Prison in Fushun City on December 25, 2004. He held a hunger strike to protest in February 2005.

Mr. Liu was arrested again on November 2, 2015, and detained for a month for suing Jiang Zemin, the former head of the Chinese communist regime who ordered the persecution of Falun Gong.

Succumbing to the persecution, Mr. Liu passed away on November 24, 2018.
