Mr. Liu Ruihai, of Sanhe City, Hebei Province, was arrested eight times and detained at various detention centers and brainwashing centers after the persecution of Falun Gong started in 1999. Succumbing to the mental pressure, he passed away on December 29, 2016. He was 67.
Mr. Liu was first arrested on the evening of October 30, 1999. Officials of the township government asked him whether he still practiced Falun Gong. As he said yes, they took him to the Yanjiao Police Station and transferred him to the Sanhe City Detention Center five days later.
During the 2000 New Year and Chinese New Year, the authorities sent people to monitor him, causing tremendous pressure to him and his family.
More than ten officials scaled the wall and broke into Mr. Liu’s home around 9 p.m. on April 19, 2000. he tried to persuade them not to persecute Falun Gong. They refused to listen. Around 1 a.m., they took Mr. Liu and his wife to the township government. They held a hunger strike to protest and were released on the 8th day. Even Mr. Liu’s 16-year-old son was arrested and held at the police station overnight.
Mr. Liu went to the Tiananmen Square to protest on June 25, 2000 and was arrested. He was handcuffed to a metal post for three hours and shocked twice with electric batons. He rolled around on the ground due to the pain. He was later sent to the Sanhe City Detention Center and held there for over a month.
Mr. Liu and his wife went to Beijing to appeal again on December 19, 2000 and were arrested. They weren’t released until December 30, 2000. During their detention, Mr. Liu was once hung up by the wrists with his feet off the ground.
After they returned home, the village officials arranged people to monitor them around the clock, sometimes coming into their home in the middle of the night to check if they were still there. The couple decided to go to Beijing to appeal again and were arrested another time. They were held in custody until January 24, 2001.
In February 2001, the authorities attempted to take Mr. Liu to a brainwashing center. He was forced to live away from home, only to be arrested again on May 31, along with his wife. They were handcuffed for a day. His wife was then released and Mr. Liu was released after eight days of detention.
Mr. Liu and his wife were harvesting corn at home in the fall of 2003, when the police came and arrested them. But the time they were released a few days later, the corn was already bad, causing tremendous financial loss for them.
Mr. Liu was arrested again between May and August 2006 and held at the Sanhe Lockup and Langfang Brainwashing Center for two months.
His next arrest was on May 19, 2007 and he was detained for an unknown amount of time.
Succumbing to the mental pressure, he passed away on December 29, 2016.
