Ms. Zhang Suhua of Anshan City, Liaoning Province, passed away on November 24, 2015, after enduring years of persecution for practicing Falun Gong. She was 54.

Ms. Zhang Suhua

Ms. Zhang and her husband, Mr. Yang Zhiwen, went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong in October 1999. The police searched them and confiscated the 10,000 yuan cash they were carrying. After 15 days of detention in Beijing, they were escorted home, where the Anshan police beat them with a broom.

Mr. Yang was arrested again on July 4, 2000. When Ms. Zhang went to the police station to deliver food to him, the police asked her why she was still practicing Falun Gong. She said that it wasn’t possible for her to give up something so great. The police arrested her and detained her for a month. Mr. Yang was later given a one-year labor camp term that was extended by four months.

In mid-November 2001, only a few days after Mr. Yang was released, the police arrested him and Ms. Zhang again. When the two were released on January 27, 2002, they didn’t dare return home and went into hiding. Unable to find them, the police arrested their son, Yang Sen, and detained the boy for a day. The boy was traumatized.

After a few months of displacement, the couple was arrested on August 20, 2002. Mr. Yang was given a three-year labor camp term. He fell into serious condition in custody and was later released on medical parole. He passed away on October 20, 2006.

After living under tremendous pressure for years, Ms. Zhang also succumbed to the persecution and died on November 24, 2015.
