A woman in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, continued to face police harassment after she was released in 2018 from serving a prison term for practicing Falun Gong. The harassment-induced mental pressure took a toll on her health, and she passed away in August 2021 at the age of 59.

Ms. Yi Chaoling

Ms. Yi Chaoling worked as a librarian at Guangdong Light Industry Occupation Technology College. She used to suffer from stomach and kidney problems as well as epilepsy. When she visited her family in Sichuan Province in 2012, a friend recommended Falun Gong to her. Soon after she took up the practice, she regained her health.

Living by Falun Gong’s principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, Ms. Yi became more considerate and was willing to contribute more at work.

On June 3, 2017, a surveillance camera recorded Ms. Yi distributing Falun Gong materials on her college campus. The school security department reported her to the police two days later, resulting in her arrest. Her Falun Gong books, informational materials, and computer were confiscated. The Haizhu District Court later sentenced her to 15 months.

When Ms. Yi was released from the Haizhu District Detention Center on September 5, 2018, the Guangdong Province Education Bureau fired her.

Ms. Yi was arrested again at her home in Guangzhou on September 13, 2019, by the police from Ya’an, Sichuan Province. Due to her high blood pressure, she was released on bail.

Ms. Yi was arrested another time on November 18, 2020, when she was getting ready to apply for her retirement benefits. She was taken to a brainwashing center and ordered to write a statement to renounce Falun Gong. When she refused to comply, Chen Bo, the head of the Haizhu District 610 Office, threatened to keep her in custody. She held a hunger strike to protest and was released that evening.

Chen went to harass her on November 23, 2020. When Ms. Yi refused to open the door, Chen ordered her property management office to turn off her water and electricity. Ms. Yi was forced to go to the Haizhu District Justice Bureau to talk to the authorities the next day to get her water and electricity turned back on.

The persecution took a toll on Ms. Yi’s health. She was dealt another blow when her husband divorced her. Facing continued police harassment, including having the police bang on her door in the middle of the night and her utilities turned off, Ms. Yi decided to live away from home to hide from the police. After six months of wandering about, she passed away in August 2021 in her hometown in Dujiangyan City, Sichuan Province.
