Zhejiang Woman Sentenced to Prison for Her Faith

Sept. 9, 2022 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Zhejiang Province, China

(Minghui.org) A 68-year-old Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, woman was recently sentenced to three years and three months for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Zhang Chunyao opened her door on the morning of April 15, 2021, to go grocery shopping, only to have a group of officers barge in and raid her place. Two printers, a laptop, and over 100,000 yuan in cash were confiscated.

The police claimed that a surveillance camera recorded Ms. Zhang distributing Falun Gong materials in November 2020. They first took her to the Zhonghe Police Station and then transferred her to the Ningbo City Detention Center.

The police submitted her case to the Yinzhou District Procuratorate in early July, and she was indicted in October. Her case was then forwarded to the Yinzhou District Court. The judge sentenced her to three years and three months on August 26, 2022.

During the prosecution process, the police pressured Ms. Zhang’s two sisters not to hire a lawyer for her. Her son and daughter-in-law, both of whom work for the government, were terrified by the persecution and feared being implicated.

Past Persecution

Prior to her latest sentencing, Ms. Zhang was arrested on September 19, 2015, after being reported for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. The police interrogated her, while chaining her hands and feet to a metal chair. She was detained for ten days.

Because Ms. Zhang filed a criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin, the former head of the communist regime who ordered the persecution of Falun Gong, the police harassed her on November 25, 2015.

Ms. Zhang was arrested again and interrogated in the police station in April 2016 for giving out information about Falun Gong.

Her next arrest was on April 18, 2019, while she was studying Falun Gong teachings at another practitioner’s home. She was held at the police station until late afternoon.
