(Minghui.org) Since 2020, the authorities in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province have been targeting Ms. Li Wenfeng and attempted to force her to give up her spiritual belief in Falun Gong, which has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
The latest harassment took place between June 20 and 21, 2022, when staff members of the Xinjin Brainwashing Center tried to intimidate her into submission. As she remained firm in her faith, the officers forcibly held her hand and pressed her fingerprints on a prepared statement, which would be submitted to their superiors as “evidence” of her giving up Falun Gong.
Around noon on June 20, Ms. Li received a call from Ni Yong, the deputy chief of Wannianchang Police Station, who asked to talk to her. Thinking of it as an opportunity to clarify the facts about Falun Gong to them, Ms. Li agreed.
Ni and director Jiang of the local street committee came the next morning and brought Ms. Li to the justice bureau across the street from the police station. Ni handed Ms. Li to two people who claimed to be from a provincial level agency (which was later confirmed to be Xinjin Brainwashing Center) and then left.
A man in his 50s introduced himself as Luo Gang. He first asked Ms. Li why she practiced Falun Gong.
Ms. Li said that she used to suffer poor health and had a bad temper, which both turned around after she took up Falun Gong. She also talked about how the communist regime demonized Falun Gong by manufacturing the Tiananmen self-immolation hoax.
“Your turn is over. Let me talk,” Luo said to her after she finished. He then began to smear Falun Gong and its founder.
Ms. Li demanded to go home around noon. But Luo wouldn’t let her.
“We must finish the task today. You need to make a choice, whether to follow the Chinese Communist Party, or your Master.”
“My faith in Falun Gong will never change,” Ms. Li replied.
Another officer stepped in, “You Falun Gong are against the Party and the people. It’s a political issue. If you follow your Master, your case would be submitted to the police and we can’t help you then.”
“It’s you who are violating the law. Do you have any legal basis for holding me here?” Ms. Li asked.
Then a woman shouted at her, “Ask your son to deliver some clothes to you. We will take you to the brainwashing center.”
“You don’t have the say,” said Ms. Li, not giving in to intimidation.
Several more officers came and attempted to force Ms. Li to renounce Falun Gong. One person threatened that someone from the central government would come in a few days and they were paying close attention to her case.
The officers kept pressuring Ms. Li, without giving her a break. At 11 p.m., Yin Shunyao, the head of Xinjin Brainwashing Center, came and also intimidated Ms. Li.
At Yin’s order, the officers brought over a piece of paper and asked Ms. Li to sign it. She refused to comply and tore it. Yin was infuriated and signaled the officers to leave.
Moments later, five people came in. They held Ms. Li’s arms behind her back, forcibly opened her tight fist and pressed her thumbprint on a piece of paper. She said to them, “I will not acknowledge whatever is written there!”
After it was done, Luo came in and said, “Alright, our job is done and we can report to the above now.”
When the officers left, Ms. Li was also released. By the time she arrived home, it was already 12 a.m. Her family told her that some officers came and banged on the door when she was away, but they didn’t open the door.
