A Nantong City, Jiangsu Province, resident died on October 29, 2022, after serving two prison sentences and having his pension suspended for practicing Falun Gong.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Lu Dequan was arrested on June 19, 2015, and held in a brainwashing center located in a hotel. His arrest was approved by the Chongchuan District Procuratorate on August 3. He appeared in the Chongchuan District Court twice, first on October 29, 2015, and then on June 21, 2016, before being sentenced to two years on July 30, 2016.
Mr. Lu was arrested again on February 25, 2019. He stood trial at the Chongchuan District Court on August 13 that year. He suffered a stroke at the Nantong Detention Center shortly after and was in critical condition. The judge sentenced him to three years in November 2019 and ordered him to serve time at the Suzhou Prison, despite the fact that he struggled with mobility issues after the stroke.
Although Mr. Lu reached retirement age when he was released in early 2022, the authorities suspended his pension with the excuse that he refused to renounce Falun Gong. He had to continue working to make ends meet, despite suffering stroke sequela. Yet the police still came to harass him. He fainted a few times in October 2022 and passed away weeks later on October 29.
