(Minghui.org) Once imprisoned and tortured for seven years, a 74-year-old retired middle school teacher in Shanghai is again facing trial for his faith in Falun Gong.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a mind-body discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Fa Zhengping was arrested on February 16, 2020 and has since been held at the Pudong New District Detention Center. The police submitted his case to the Procuratorate in mid-May 2020. The prosecutor indicted him and moved his case to the Fengxian District Court, one that has been designated to hear most Falun Gong cases in the region, around September 2020.
Prior to his latest arrest, Mr. Fa, who took up Falun Gong in late 1995, was arrested multiple times and incarcerated for upholding his faith.
Mr. Fa was first arrested in May 2001. He was monitored around the clock in detention and later given two years of forced labor.
He was arrested again on April 6, 2005 and given two more years of forced labor. He served time at Shanghai No. 3 Forced Labor Camp.
He was sentenced to four years in Tilanqiao Prison after his third arrest on December 16, 2008.
Mr. Fa suffered constant torture in detention. The guards starved and force fed him, sometimes feeding him with unknown drugs. For a long time, he was only allowed to sleep for two hours each day.
In the summer, the guards twice forced him to wear a thick sweater and down jacket, and kept him tied up for over 20 days. Sometimes, they shocked him with four electric batons or tied him to a fence.
As a result of the torture, he suffered severe brain damage and had significant hearing, vision, and memory loss. His legs and arms were bruised after being tied up for long stretches. He was unable to lift his arms and had difficulty walking. He also suffered from extremely low blood pressure, and his blood turned dark due to lack of oxygen.
Even after being released, he was monitored by people of unknown identity around the clock. Those people followed him closely when he went out for grocery shopping or visited a relative.
