Court Upholds Three-Year Term for 74-Year-Old Woman, Charged for Her Faith

Nov. 11, 2020 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Hubei Province, China

(Minghui.org) It was recently confirmed by Minghui.org that the Xiaogan City Intermediate Court in Hubei Province ruled on June 8, 2020 to uphold the three-year sentence against Ms. Wang Guilan for her faith in Falun Gong.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Wang, a 74-year-old resident of Xiaogan City, Hubei Province, was arrested at home on September 19, 2019. This was her second arrest in three months, following an arrest on June 20 for distributing Falun Gong materials. She was released on the same day of her June arrest.

The authorities accused Ms. Wang of being a repeat offender, as she just finished serving two years and five months for practicing Falun Gong a year ago.

Two days after her court hearing on December 26, 2019, the Xiaochang County Court sentenced Ms. Wang to three years in prison. She appealed the verdict with the Xiaogan City Intermediate Court on January 3, 2020, and was rejected five months later.

Ms. Wang took up Falun Gong in 1996. She credits the practice with curing her rheumatism, cervical spine problem, insomnia, and dizziness. After the communist regime launched the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, she was detained in a detention center and a brainwashing center, and was forced to pay 10,000 yuan in illegal fines. She was arrested on February 24, 2016 for hanging up a Falun Gong banner and sentenced to two years to Wuhan Women’s Prison by the Caidian District Court in April 2017.
