Already Incarcerated for 8 Years, Ningxia Woman Arrested for Her Faith Again

Oct. 2, 2020 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Ningxia, China

(Minghui.org) A Yinchuan City, Ningxia Province, woman has been detained for over a month after she was arrested on August 22, 2020, for distributing information about Falun Gong, a mind-body discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

It’s reported that Ms. Shan held a hunger strike for six days at Yinchuan Detention Center to protest the persecution. Her family burst into tears upon learning about her situation, especially her mother in her 80s.

Ms. Shan’s family hired a lawyer for her on September 2. The lawyer visited her on September 3 and submitted a request to release her on bail at the local police station on September 4. The lawyer argued that the persecution of Falun Gong doesn’t have any legal basis, and that Ms. Shan’s distribution of the materials was exercising her freedom of speech and didn’t cause harm to anyone or to society.

The police have yet to issue a decision to the lawyer’s request.

This isn’t the first time that Ms. Shan has been targeted for her faith. She was given two years of forced labor in 2000 and three years of forced labor in 2004. She was sentenced to five years in prison to be served as probation and to three years in prison in 2016.

Her husband, Mr. Wang Desheng, was sentenced to four and eight years in 1999 and 2005, respectively. He is still serving a 13-year term during Ms. Shan’s latest arrest.
