Attachment to Doing Things

August 25, 2018 |   By a Falun Dafa practitioner outside China

(Minghui.org) I recently studied Explaining the Content of Falun Dafa, in which Master said:

“Another thing that’s appeared among our assistants is an attachment to doing things.” (“Comments Regarding the Fa-Rectification Made at the Falun Dafa Assistants Meeting in Beijing” from Explaining the Content of Falun Dafa)

I previously believed this lecture was only for coordinators and had nothing to do with me. I later realized that I had this attachment when I was working in the media. I further read:

“You should feel enthusiastic about doing this work, but your motive has to be the Fa, for the purpose of people studying the Fa and obtaining the Fa, for promoting the Fa on a large scale, and for saving people. Your starting point can’t be "for me to do something.” (“Comments Regarding the Fa-Rectification Made at the Falun Dafa Assistants Meeting in Beijing” from Explaining the Content of Falun Dafa)

I recognized the danger of this attachment.

Attachment of Doing Things Includes an Attachment for Fame and Gain

When working in the media, if one feels unfairness with regard to their workload, salary or job title, it shows one has an attachment to fame and gain. The wish for virtue and self-importance is often hidden. Ordinary people pursue fame and gain, such as by working in a more important position, showing off one’s abilities, and so on.

Learning Skills for the Sake of Showing Off

Our media needs professional employees with good skills. While there is nothing wrong with learning more skills, if one’s heart is not pure, one subconsciously wants to get promoted and to validate oneself. Their thoughts are: “I am capable,” “Everyone should listen to me,” or “the project can’t be done without me.” These are human attachments.

When we work in the media, no matter how great our skills are, they are given to us by Master to validate the Fa. They are not for the sake of seeking an ordinary job, validating one’s ability, and especially not to be used to seek fame and profit among Dafa projects. We need to constantly watch our thoughts to avoid going awry.

I faced a rather large tribulation recently while working in the media. On the surface, it looked like the conflict was caused by the indoctrination of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). However, when I looked within, I found that I had the heart for doing things. I was pursuing fame and gain and validating myself. I did not cultivate myself steadfastly. That was why I had accumulated this large tribulation. I had a loophole.

Today, when I study the “attachment to doing things” (“Comments Regarding the Fa-Rectification Made at the Falun Dafa Assistants Meeting in Beijing” from Explaining the Content of Falun Dafa), I deeply appreciate Master’s guidance. From this lecture, I was able to identify my shortcomings. I will work toward correcting my attitude from now on and cooperate well with fellow practitioners.
