Police Detain a Falun Gong Practitioner and Threaten Her Lawyer

November 20, 2018 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Guangdong Province, China

(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Yu Ping from Guangzhou City was arrested by officers from Beijinglu Police Station in Yuexiu District on October 21, 2018, because she was carrying Falun Gong flyers in her bag. She was taken to a brainwashing center. When her family and a lawyer attempted to visit her, a guard threatened them.

The family went to the Beijinglu Police Station when Ms. Yu didn't return home. The police did not provide any information on her whereabouts. Twenty-four hours later, her family learned that she had been arrested and taken to Guangzhou Legal System Education School—a brainwashing center, after she was spotted on a surveillance video.

Worried about her safety, the family and the lawyer went to the brainwashing section in the Tanggang Drug Rehab Center. Director Li received them.

The lawyer asserted: “The drug rehab center operates according to anti-drug laws,” but the detention center follows criminal laws. What is the legal basis for an education school to detain people? It is against the law to detain people without authority.”

“That is your argument. I have my own opinion,” the director replied.

The lawyer demanded an explanation for Ms. Yu's detention. The director said she was brought over by the police from Beijinglu Police Station. He suggested the family and the lawyer go there and ask the police.

The family and the lawyer went to Shijing Police Station, nearest the center, for help. The officers there did not believe that a brainwashing center would detain people without going through a legal process. In fact, they did not even know that a brainwashing center existed in the drug rehab center.

Two officers from Shijing Police Station accompanied the family and the lawyer to the brainwashing center. A male and a female guard met with them. The male guard was infuriated when he saw the lawyer. He tried to confiscate the lawyer's identification card.

“Lawyers are supposed to serve the government. They need to follow the Party's (CCP's) directions. Do you understand?” he yelled. “Answer me!”

“A lawyer's job is to help clients according to the law,” the lawyer replied. The guard then threatened to hit the lawyer.
