Chengdu Man Sentenced to Prison

Jan. 21, 2017 |   By a Minghui corespondent in Sichuan Province, China

(Minghui.org) Mr. Su Qinghua, a Falun Gong practitioner from Chengdu City, was tried and sentenced to three years in prison by the Hi-Tech Development District Court on December 29, 2016.

Mr. Su was charged with “using a cult organization to undermine law enforcement,” a charge commonly used by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to imprison Falun Gong practitioners in its persecution of the spiritual practice.

His attorney pleaded not guilty to the charges on his behalf.

Mr. Su was arrested more than a year ago, on September 2, 2015. He is accused of writing words on a wall with spray paint. He has been held at the Pi County Detention Center.

The prosecutor showed photos of the spray painted words. It reads “Global Efforts to Bring Jiang Zemin to Justice.” The message appeared in Chengdu on August 31, 2015.

He also showed the items confiscated from Mr. Su's home: a Falun Gong book, two bottles of spray paint, a laptop, and four DVDs.

The surveillance video shows a man on an electric bike stopping in the area for two minutes and taking something out of a bag. However, it does not show what was taken out. The prosecutor claims that the man is Mr. Su.

Mr. Su's attorney pointed out that the evidence does not prove that the words were written by Mr. Su and the charges are based on suspicion and lack of evidence.

He also said that the Falun Gong book only proves that Mr. Su is a Falun Gong practitioner, but not that he broke the law.

The attorney asked Mr. Su be acquitted.

After a 10-minute recess, the judge sentenced Mr. Su to three years in prison.

Mr. Su and his mother said they would appeal.

Only Mr. Su's mother was allowed to attend the trial.

Yu Hui, then head of Chengdu City Anti-cult Office (an extra-judicial agency tasked with persecuting Falun Gong), was responsible for ordering the arrest of Mr. Su and many other Chengdu practitioners.
