Ms. Wang Changjin was tried on August 9 for making phone calls to inform people of the persecution of Falun Gong.
Her lawyer from Beijing defended her constitutional right to practice and spread information about Falun Gong, as no law in China criminalizes the spiritual discipline based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.
The prosecution evidence included testimonials from the 44 people who received Ms. Wang's phone call regarding Falun Gong. Her lawyer argued that those phone conversations posed no harm to anyone, let alone undermining law enforcement.
The lawyer demanded Ms. Wang's acquittal, but judge Pan Hao adjourned the hearing without issuing a verdict.
Ms. Wang was first placed under criminal detention on December 8, 2015, but was later placed under house arrest on December 29. It is not clear if she was free to go home or taken into custody after the hearing.
Ms. Bian Pingge was tried on August 8 for refusing to renounce Falun Gong.
Both Ms. Bian and her lawyer argued for her constitutional right to freedom of belief. One college student who received financial support from Ms. Bian also submitted a written statement testifying to her character.
The courthouse was heavily guarded, with local officials monitoring the entire court proceeding.
The lawyer revealed later he was threatened and told to drop the case, but he refused to comply.
Ms. Bian remains detained following her arrest in March of this year.
Mr. Lu Shunmin was arrested on August 12, 2016, while urging the local police chief Zhou Hengwei to stop persecuting Falun Gong.
This is not the first time the 66-year-old man was targeted for his faith. He has been imprisoned for a total of 12 years.
Chief Zhou personally directed arrests, torture, and sentencing of many local Falun Gong practitioners. He is now keeping Mr. Lu in the Xuchang County Detention Center.
Since the end of July 2016, Falun Gong practitioners held in Jiazhou Prison and Chengdu Women’s Prison were not allowed to meet their families. The prisons told the families that they received this instruction from upper authorities, and stated that so-called “special forces” would force the practitioners to give up their belief. The families were worried that the prisons would torture the practitioners more severely.
Ms. Cui Hong has been detained in Beijing Women’s Prison since March 2015. She was tortured inhumanly for a long time. She was forced to do heavy labor, which severely injured her back.
The prison informed Ms. Cui's husband at the beginning of August 2016, that she had symptoms of a severe heart attack and must be sent to the prison hospital. The prison demanded Ms. Cui's agree to send her to the hospital because she would not cooperate.
Ms. Cui’s husband strongly requested the prison release her on bail for medical treatment. The prison refused to release her.
Ms. Cui is still in a critical condition.
Mr. Bai He was arrested on July 23, 2015, for filing a criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin, former head of the Chinese Communist Party. He has been detained for more than one year.
His lawyer learned that he had been tried secretly on June 1, 2016, when they met in the detention center on August 12. The court sentenced Mr. Bai to 3.5 years' imprisonment on August 5.
Mr. Bai has appealed to the intermediate court.
Ms. Wen Ling was sentenced to 3.5 years’ imprisonment by Beihu District Court on June 17, 2016. She appealed to Chenzhou Intermediate Court.
The intermediate’s court ignored the law and still upheld the original sentence. Ms. Wen was taken to Hunan Provincial Women’s Prison on August 15.
Ms. Yang Jian was arrested by the police from Wuqing District on the night of June 25, 2016. She has been held at Wuqing District Detention Center.
Prior to this arrest, Ms. Yang was arrested on September 15, 2010, and sentenced to five years' imprisonment. She was tortured into a mental collapse in January 2013 and not released until November 30, 2015.
Wuhan Intermediate Court upheld Mr. Wan Dajiu’s original four-year sentence in June 2016.
The court ignored questions from Mr. Wan and his lawyer about the facts and evidence. There was no hearing and the case was not sent back for re-evaluation. Mr. Wan’s family has decided to appeal again.
