(Minghui.org) Mr. Li Congchun and four other Falun Gong practitioners from Handan City, Hebei Province, were arrested after talking to people about Falun Gong by Chengguan police on January 26, 2016. He and another male practitioner are being held at the Feixiang Detention Center.
Detention center authorities have tried to prevent his lawyer from meeting with him.
Mr. Li's lawyer went to the detention center on the morning of February 1, 2016, but was told he needed to notify the Chengguan Police Station before he could see his client.
The lawyer was then told that he would also need to file his client's case with the police. After he produced the required documents to officer Chang Jianhui, however, the guards at the detention center still refused to allow him to see Mr. Li.
The lawyer returned to the detention center on the afternoon of February 5 and was told by a female guard that the Chengguan Police Station required him to put in writing that “Falun Gong is a cult” before he could meet with Mr. Li.
He refused to cooperate with their demand and asked to see her superior. He also called the city mayor's hotline to file a complaint against the police station and the detention center.
Detention center chief Lian Yuhe eventually met with the lawyer and said he needed to talk to officials from the police station to arrange a meeting with his client. He also said the lawyer could return the next day to meet with Mr. Li.
The following day, the lawyer tried to get a hold of chief Lian, but he did not answer his phone.
Mr. Li's lawyer asked to see him again on February 16, 2016. An official at the detention center approved the visit, but a guard suddenly delayed the meeting and said that they needed to first communicate with the Handan City Police Department.
The lawyer was eventually told to come back the next day.
After filing a complaint against the authorities and people involved, the lawyer was finally able to visit Mr. Li in the detention center on the morning of February 18, 2016.
