Raising Our Moral Standards

February 23, 2016 |   By Jing Yun, a practitioner in China

(Minghui.org) It is known throughout China that Falun Gong practitioners are required to live in accordance with the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. As a result, the moral standards of Chinese society and people's behavior toward one another are improving.

The following two stories are examples of the compassion and kindness that Falun Gong practitioners show to others.

Giving Back the Gifts

Far from my home, on the other side of my village, lives a woman whose leg was disabled, and she had to use a cane to walk. I rarely saw her and had never spoken to her, yet one day she came to our house.

She asked my mother if I could help her get a certificate of disability. Of course, I helped her fill out the forms, and after receiving the certificate, she came back to my house and gave my mother a basket of eggs and several pairs of socks. These were gifts in return for the simple favor I had done for her.

The lady and her husband sold shoes and socks in the market for a living. Their financial situation was very tight. When I got home and saw the gifts she had left for us, I said to my mother, “We cannot keep these; we must give them back.”

“I know. I shouldn’t have taken her gifts,” my mother said. “But she nearly cried as she stood there leaning on her cane. I felt that I had no choice but to take them. It would have been impolite to have refused them.”

“What should I do? I can’t accept her gifts. I must return them,” I said. My mother thought about it and had a suggestion: this lady's elder sister lives in our village, so we could give them to her.

My mother found the elder sister and gave her the socks and eggs. The elder sister and her husband were both very surprised and asked us why. My mother explained that as a Falun Gong practitioner, I follow the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. She told them that I could not accept the gifts from her sister for merely helping her get her certificate of disability.

They were very impressed that a Falun Gong practitioner would be so kind as to help someone out and not accept anything in return. As such, they became interested in learning Falun Gong and have practiced it ever since. They also often attend the weekly Fa study sessions at my house.

The sister, who sold shoes at the market one day needed to get to work but could not find her cane anywhere. A fellow practitioner suggested that maybe Master Li (the founder of Falun Gong) was giving her a hint that she no longer needed to use it. She also thought that she might no longer need to use it to walk. She now no longer uses a cane and walks the same as any healthy person. Both she and her sister know from first-hand experience the wonders of Falun Gong.

Hit By a Motorcycle

My husband, daughter, and I live in a rented apartment in the city. One day, I rode my bicycle to pick up my daughter from school. She was in first grade at the time and rode in the child seat on the back of my bike. I helped her up onto the bike, checked for traffic, then went ahead on the bicycle to cross the street.

We were about half way across the street when I heard a strange noise behind me. I turned around and saw a motorcycle lying on the ground. Someone asked, “Is your daughter hurt”?

I was shocked and realized that we had been hit by that motorcycle. I checked my daughter, who also practices Falun Gong, and asked her if she was okay. She said she was fine. The motorcycle rider was screaming, and people were beginning to gather around. So I called out, “My child is fine... My child is fine.”

I asked the rider of the motorcycle if he was hurt, but he didn’t answer me. His arm and forehead had a little blood, but he didn’t appear to be seriously injured.

I pushed my bicycle off the road onto the sidewalk. The rider called out to me to wait. He came over and asked me for money to fix his motorcycle. He said I had blocked his way and was at fault.

“I have no money to help you,” I said. “If you give me your address, I will send you money as soon as I have it.” He said it was his boss's motorcycle, and he would have to get it fixed right away so he could give it back to him.

I offered him the only money I had: 12 yuan. He pointed to the damaged motorcycle and said he would need over 20 yuan to fix it. He said he would come to my house and get the rest of the money. Having just found a job, I told him that I could give him the rest of the money in the near future, but could not pay him right then.

I came to realize that this person had a predestined opportunity to learn the truth about Falun Gong, so I began to tell him the facts about Falun Gong and the persecution as soon as I could. I told him that I had been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party for my belief in Falun Gong. I told him that we practitioners only want to be good people, and that he should repeat “Falun Dafa is good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good.” He stretched out his neck and looked at me. “What did you say?” he asked. So I repeated it for him.

He did not say a word. He just got back on his boss's motorcycle and rode away. One woman who saw what happened said, “That man is lucky you practice Falun Gong.”

When we got home, my daughter told me her ankle felt broken. She had not told me at the time of the accident, because she knows Falun Gong practitioners should be good people and not add trouble to others.

It soon became ever-more-clear to me how much we were protected by Master Li when that accident occurred. If not, we might have been badly injured, or worse. Our bicycle could have easily been destroyed, yet we were completely unharmed.

My daughter is in high school now. I often mention the incident to remind her of our Master’s boundless compassion.
