Once Imprisoned for 7 Years, Liaoning Woman Tried Again for Her Faith

December 28, 2016 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Liaoning Province

(Minghui.org) A Dandong City resident was tried for using a cult to undermine law enforcement, a standard pretext used by the Chinese communist regime in its attempt to frame and imprison Falun Gong practitioners.

Ms. Zheng Shuchun, 62, recovered from her liver problems after she began to practice Falun Gong in 2005. Having had firsthand experience with Falun Gong, she has never shied away from telling people that the persecution is wrong. This landed her in police custody, and she was sentenced to 7 years following her arrest in 2009.

Her latest arrest came barely one year after she was released from prison. She was seized by police on September 11, 2016 and appeared in court on December 13.

Ms. Zheng was brought to the courtroom with her hands cuffed and feet shackled. Her lawyer demanded removal of the handcuffs and shackles per a ruling by the Supreme People’s Court, but judge Ma Shuhe said, “I don’t care about the higher-up’s regulations. I’m following our provincial and municipal rules.”

Prosecutor Shang Shu asked Ms. Zheng, “Why are you still practicing Falun Gong after being imprisoned for 7 years?”

Ms. Zheng said that Falun Gong gave her a second life and she just wanted more people to benefit from it.

Shang accused Ms. Zheng of being a repeat offender, and the lawyer argued that his client’s past imprisonment was a result of groundless persecution.

Judge Ma mocked Ms. Zheng when she struggled to catch what Shang said due to her poor hearing.

Ma kept talking to his clerk when the lawyer was presenting the defense arguments. He eventually protested against Ma’s demeanor in the courtroom.

During the cross examination, Ms. Zheng talked about how the police deceived her into signing the interrogation record. She said, “I am an illiterate and had no idea of what was on that piece of paper. The police refused to read the contents to me. They just said it’d do me good if I signed my name.”

Ms. Zheng also testified that the police didn’t give her any food even though she offered to pay for it.

Both Ms. Zheng and her lawyer demanded her acquittal, but Ma adjourned the hearing without issuing a verdict.
