Honoring My Prehistoric Vow to Save Sentient Beings

October 12, 2016 |   By Ruzhen, a Falun Dafa practitioner in Heibei Province, China

(Minghui.org) I had been a member of the Communist Youth League for 12 years by 1996, but had much broader interests outside communist ideology. I read books on Buddhism and practiced several styles of qigong.

However, it was not until I picked up the book Zhuan Falun that I realized what true cultivation is. I read it during the day, in the evenings, waiting for the train, and on the train. After I finished reading the entire book, I still wanted to read some more. The more I read, the more I realized the richness of its content. I couldn’t put it down.

Every time I received my paycheck, the first thing I did with my money was to buy 12 copies of Zhuan Falun to give to my family members, classmates, teachers, superiors, colleagues, friends and relatives.

I somehow sensed the book’s true value. I have been practicing Falun Dafa (aka Falun Gong) for 20 years. That's 20 Years of trials and tribulations, joy and wonderment. Thanks to Master, I have arrived at where I am today.

Advancing Diligently in Dafa Cultivation Right From the Start

I belong to the group of Dafa practitioners that are in the state of gradual enlightenment. When I first obtained the Fa and was learning the third exercise, my celestial eye opened. I saw in front of me a big, pure and innocent eye.

When I was learning the fourth exercise the following day, I saw two eyes in front of me. Within half a year, when I sat down in meditation, I would levitate. When I lay down, even my bed covers would float.

A Fa Conference was held in the State Planning Commission auditorium in Beijing in the fall of 1997. I was one of the speakers. I talked about my cultivation and some personal understandings on the Fa.

A lot of people were touched and many government officials stunned at what I had to say. Those who had experienced the Cultural Revolution were especially sensitive to some of the topics I spoke about.

I was warned by more than one person to be careful not to jeopardize my “political future.” My response was a faint smile.

My performance at work was highly praised, and I slowly moved up to leadership positions.

On April 25, 1999, I had just been transferred to the Petitions Office. On that historic day, Dafa practitioners from all over the country arrived in Beijing to participate in a legal and peaceful petition outside the national Petitions Office.

I joined them without hesitation.

Some practitioners were afraid the petition might extend to the following day and called their offices to request leave. I thought to myself, “I might be the only practitioner working for the Petitions Office. Will my being here affect my job and my political future?”

I made a decision, “I will continue to stand with the others to appeal for Falun Gong, even if it means I'll get fired.”

I stayed until the end before going home. The next day, I was indeed placed under investigation.

Focusing on One Thought - To Step Out to Validate Dafa

I was arrested, detained and imprisoned several times after the persecution of Falun Dafa began on July 20, 1999. My reputation was dragged through the mud. Local government officials and the police extorted huge sums of money from me. I was also brutally tortured multiple times.

I went to Beijing for the third time in 2000, carrying a petition letter. The letter raised three issues: (1) Falun Gong is completely beneficial to society, (2) the incidents of persecution since July 1999, and (3) an appeal to all levels of government to cease and desist persecuting Falun Gong practitioners.

I was arrested on Tiananmen Square and was given a five-year prison sentence. My father-in-law passed away in great distress after my sentence.

In the spring of 2001, I was forcibly carried out of a detention center by four military police and taken to a prison. I was transferred to another prison a week later.

My hands were cuffed behind my back for long periods of time. I was shocked with electric batons, put in solitary confinement and injected with unknown drugs.

I became disabled in the spring of 2002 and lost all strength. I could barely stand on my feet. I shivered under my thick winter coat in the dead of summer.

My mother came to visit me and was shocked to witness what I had become. She passed away about a month later.

In the spring of 2003, I got news that my husband, who was a government official, had been sentenced to 15 years for practicing Falun Gong. Our 11-year-old daughter had to move to the countryside to live with her grandparents.

I was tortured to the extent that I could barely walk. When the inmates had to go out to work in the fields, four criminal inmates dragged me along. They dumped me somewhere and left me there all day while they worked. My physical condition worsened.

Seeing my condition, some practitioners, lured by the promise of possible early release, began to waver in their faith and stopped practicing.

The rate of Dafa practitioners renouncing their belief increased, and the police likewise got their monetary rewards or promotions for making this happen.

I was dragged to the infirmary for a check-up one day. While waiting in line, I couldn’t hold myself up and slid down to the floor. Everything turned black in front of me and I believed I was at the brink of death. I called out in my heart, “Master, please save me!”

A voice replied, “Hang on to that one thought!” I knew it was Master, and went over and over Master’s verse in my mind:

“His palm erected, the whole Cosmos shakes,A grand Buddha stands between Heaven and Earth.” (“The Awakened One” from Hong Yin)

I went on a hunger strike for the ninth time on July 12, 2003. A plastic tube was inserted into my nostril and I was force feed for over three months.

I gave myself to Master, and after two days, I could feel that the bad substances in me had been eliminated. My whole body felt light and my mind was clear. I was able to gradually recall many verses from Hong Yin.

A guard later called me to her office, and asked me why I wouldn’t eat.

“I’m not hungry,” I replied. “I haven’t eaten or drunk anything for nine days, yet I feel fine.” I even sung her a song.

The guard remarked, “You’ve got pretty powerful lungs. However, in here, when you don’t eat, you'll be force fed.”

The inmates came to carry me away to be force fed, but when they opened the door to a corridor. I dashed off and found the Corrections Office.

I told the Corrections Officer that the inmates were trying to force feed me even though I wasn't hungry. The officer looked surprised, and then yelled at the inmates for letting me run around.

I was returned to the first prison in mid-October 2003, where I was put in solitary confinement. There were no windows in the cell and no heating in the winter. The place was cold, dark and damp, with only a wooden door leading to the corridor outside.

Before 4 o’clock every morning, several criminal inmates would come into my cell, handcuff me to the bed, and proceed to beat me. Tears of pain would flow uncontrollably sometimes, but I never uttered a sound.

Whenever I ate the food provided, I had a stomachache, my pupils would dilate and my hair fell out in big clumps. I realized that the food had been poisoned, as I had been given various kinds of unknown drugs in the other prison.

One day, one of the criminal inmates asked me if I could sing. I didn’t know about Dafa songs at the time, so I sang a song about being a good person. Her tears were falling freely while I sang.

When I finished, she exclaimed, as if having just made a discovery, “She's not mentally ill!” The guards had apparently told the inmates that I was mentally unstable.

I was allowed to go out in the yard in handcuffs one time. One of the inmates recognized me, and told the others, “She's not mentally ill. She's a Falun Gong practitioner!”

Since then, I was able to obtain Dafa materials and copies of Master’s new lectures from other practitioners in the prison.

I dreamed about two fairies placing some fresh flowers next to my pillow. They turned into colorful clouds as they flew away and disappeared out of sight. Then, another two fairies did the same thing and disappeared the same way. I knew it was Master encouraging me.

Growing Crops to Validate the Fa

My prison term ended on August 2005. I was finally let out of solitary confinement and relieved of my handcuffs. I put on my own clothes and went home. My mother-in-law couldn’t recognize me.

The first thing I did was to clear out and burn all my books, graduation certificates and awards; everything that had anything to do with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

My mother-in-law missed her only son. Every day she would say, “My son has never done anything wrong. He's a good man. Will I ever see him again?” She passed away in the spring of 2009, while repeatedly calling out her son’s name.

My own son was about to go to a university. I had no source of income, so I borrowed some money from friends and relatives to buy some seeds to grow corn to sell.

I had no money for fertilizers or pesticides. I could only pull the weeds out by hand.

When I harvested the corn in the fall, I saw nine udumbara flowers on the corn leaves. Udumbara flowers are said to signify the coming of a great sage or enlightened being to save people on earth. I enjoyed a good harvest that year.

The following year, my neighbor said, “You grow crops, but don’t use fertilizer. As time passes, it won’t work. I’ll do an experiment with you.”

She then planted two rows of well fertilized corn right next to mine.

We had a drought that fall, and my neighbor’s corn became small and dry. However, my corn grew tall and plump. I also grew peanuts that year, and they showed the same results.

When the others noticed my crop, they said that they would also not use fertilizers next year. I told them, “Just remember to frequently recite the nine golden words: Falun Dafa is good! Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good!”

This is my seventh year planting crops with no fertilizers or pesticides, and the yields have all been extraordinarily good.

I was the envy of all around. My neighbor said, “All you use is water and your crops just grow! We all need to practice Falun Gong.”

Since farming involved pulling weeds and killing lives, I felt a little uncomfortable with this. But my mind was put at ease after reading “The Approach to Cultivation” in Hong Yin III, where Master mentions “students, farmers, and workers alike.”

I knew then that I was walking on the right path that will enable me to return to my original, true self. Natural food is exactly what people should be eating – not those with fertilizers or pesticides. Dafa practitioners are leading the way and validating the Fa in different ways.

The Hebei Provincial 610 Office ordered officers from the Domestic Security Division to arrest me on the evening before the 2008 Olympics. They harassed my family and relatives to obtain information on my whereabouts.

In order to save these misguided officers from committing crimes against Dafa practitioners, I went into hiding for a week in my cornfield. I spend my days sending forth righteous thoughts.

There were many mosquitoes in the field, and one landed on my forehead. I said to the mosquito, “I am a Dafa practitioner. I am about to send forth righteous thought to eliminate the old forces. If you are here to mess with me, to persecute me, I will have you eliminated.”

The mosquito then flew off.

A kind-hearted neighbor came to tend to my field and found me. She returned with some food and water hidden in a basket under some clothes.

She was building a new house that already had a roof and walls, but no window or door yet. She let me stay there so I could keep dry when it rained and I didn’t have to worry about food and drink any more.

I was able to return home after the Olympics.

People Meet with Retribution for Mistreating Dafa Practitioners

I went to Beijing to petition in 2000, and was arrested. The police officer who wrote up my report and fabricated my “crime,” was found dead in his garage three years later.

September 2009 was the first year of my farming venture. I did not use pesticide. A village head threw his leftover pesticide onto my peanut field on purpose. A patch of my peanut seedlings withered. He did the same to my corn field the following year causing similar damage to a patch of sprouting corn. He died of a heart attack at age 54.

In October 2011, my building’s custodian tricked me into opening my door under pretext of checking my water meter, so that the police could arrest me. I was persecuted to the point of losing consciousness. After four days, the 610 Office was afraid to take responsibility and released me unconditionally. The custodian had refused to listen to me when I told him about Dafa and the persecution, and insisted on doing the evil Party’s bidding. He died from cancer six months later.

Duty-bound to Help Save People With Righteous Thoughts

When I witnessed these lives gone one after the other because of what they did, I honestly felt sorry for them. They didn’t know the truth and were misled by the CCP's lies and propaganda, and so were unwittingly doing things they didn’t truly mean to do.

I understood the seriousness of my responsibility to do my best to pull these people out from under the lies and deceit of the CCP's manipulation.

In 2013, I voluntarily sought out the head of the Domestic Security Division to talk to him about Dafa and the persecution and offer him my apologies that I hadn't spoken to the people there earlier.

I told him earnestly that I was sorry I was unable to stop them from committing sins and accumulating karma, as my cultivation was not good enough.

He smiled and questioned, “Who has cultivated well enough?” He even helped me establish residency so that I could apply for an identification card, and went to the Secretary of the Politics and Legal Affairs Committee to negotiate the payment of my back pay in wages.

I took a beautifully-packaged CD about Dafa and went to see the director of the local 610 Office in 2015, meaning to offer it to him.

The director hesitated for a moment, and said in a loud voice, “Bring it over. I’ll smash it for you. I can easily do something about you too.”

As he reached over to snatch the CD from my hand, I said to him calmly, “I’m sure you can make a call and the police will be here promptly to have me arrested. You have that kind of power. But, I’m here for your good. I want to save you from future disaster. What you decide to do is your choice. Yet, I believe if you decide to put me in harm’s way, you will one day regret it. The 610 Office is an illegal organization, and you will not be one of its directors for the rest of your life.”

He asked me if I had sent criminal complaints against Jiang Zemin to the Supreme People's Procuratorate and People's Court.

I told him I had, and sent forth a strong righteous thought to stop him from committing further sins.

When I next visited the 610 Office, the director had his accountant offer me a 500 yuan subsidy. It was a token amount, but it made me realize the power of compassion, which is what every Dafa practitioner must possess and practice.
