Ms. Zhang's husband came home on the evening of December 16, 2014 to find his wife handcuffed behind the back. Their home was being ransacked by eight police officers from Lüyuan Police Department and Chengxi Police Station. Seeing their hard-earned money taken away, he censured police, calling them robbers. At the police station, Ms. Zhang's daughter was interrogated. She was forced to sign a pre-printed interrogation record. When she questioned its accuracy, police officer Li Zheng threatened, “For your own good, you had better just sign it!” Fearing her own detention, she reluctantly signed.

At noon the following day, Ms. Zhang's daughter was told by a police officer that her mother was officially detained and was on the way to Changchun No. 3 Detention Center.

Ms. Zhang's husband was released later that afternoon. He had been tied to a heater on cement floor throughout his detention, and not given food or drink the whole day.
