February 12, 2014 |   By a Minghui correspondent from Tianjin City, China

(Minghui.org) A Tanggu Court judge in the Binhai New District of Tianjin, secretly sentenced Mr. Wang Guiqi to four and half years in prison. Mr. Wang's attorneys appealed his case to the Second Intermediate Court in Tianjin, but the judge ignored the facts and upheld the verdict.

The day after the second trial, Mr. Wang's lawyers filed charges against the officials involved in Mr. Wang's trials.

Arrest and First Trial

Hangzhoudao and Daliangzi Police Stations in the Tanggu District arrested Mr. Wang in November 2012 because he practiced Falun Dafa. They illegally searched his house.

Tanggu Court tried Mr. Wang secretly on March 21, 2013. The court didn't inform his family and appointed him a lawyer despite his objection. During the trial, Mr. Wang insisted on defending himself.

Judge Hinders Attorneys Preparing for Mr. Wang's Second Trial

Mr. Wang's family hired two human rights lawyers from Beijing after they learned about the secret trial. The two pled not guilty for Mr. Wang at his second trial. They went to the Tanggu Court on April 25 and May 8 in 2013, asking to see Mr. Wang's files. Chief judge Li Hongliang denied their requests. On May 8, the lawyers officially appealed to the court.

Mr. Wang's lawyers received the verdict on July 29. He was sentenced to four and half years in prison. The lawyers appealed to the Tianjin Second Intermediate Court on August 2, 2013.

The intermediate court notified the lawyers on August 30 that they could read Mr. Wang's files. This was the first time the lawyers had been allowed to see them. The court asked the lawyers to submit their defense in writing on September 1 and September 16, planning to conduct a secret trial again. The lawyers refused to comply and submitted letters demanding to have an open trial.

Previous Verdict Upheld after Open Trial

The court finally held an open trial on the morning on November 4. Only one out of two dozen of Mr. Wang's family members was allowed to enter the courtroom and witness the trial. During the proceedings, the presiding judge interrupted the lawyers repeatedly to prevent them from defending Mr. Wang effectively. The court upheld the previous verdict passed down by the Tanggu District Court.

That afternoon, Mr. Wang's lawyers filed a complaint with the Second Court of the Tianjin Procuratorate against those who participated in Mr. Wang's unlawful trials. The lawyers accused them of abusing their power, malicious prosecution, and illegal detention.
