Ms. Zhang Hui is a Falun Gong practitioner in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province. She was illegally arrested by local police for upholding her belief and telling people about Falun Gong. She was tortured during interrogation and while being detained. In 2007, she was illegally sentenced to two years of forced labor.
In the past fourteen years, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been using every means at their disposal to cover up the truth of the persecution, which has resulted in Falun Gong practitioners' persecution cases not being reported in a timely fashion. The outside world has learned of the outrageous criminal acts only from practitioners' sharing their personal experiences in prison or labor camps after being released, or from witness reports from kind-hearted people.
These shocking facts of the persecution are merely the tip of the iceberg. Countless more persecution cases have not yet been investigated or reported.
Scores of police officers from the Xingfu Street Police Station led by Hui Chunlai from the Xinpu District 610 Office, broke into Ms. Zhang's home on April 16, 2007, ransacked it, and confiscated Falun Gong books, Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party brochures, Falun Gong flyers, and other personal belongings. The police coerced Ms. Zhang's family to tell her on the telephone that her relatives had come to visit, so she should come back home. As soon as she returned home Ms. Zhang was arrested and taken to the Xingfu Street Police Station.
The police kept her in the interrogation room for hours until dusk. Her family became worried about her and went to the police station to see her. As soon as her family left, the police handcuffed her and locked her up in an iron cage until noon the next day.
The police then took her to the Zhongzheng Hotel, where several 610 Office members and over 20 thugs took turns beating her. They demanded that she tell them where she obtained the Falun Gong materials, and they deprived her of sleep for seven days.
Ms. Zhang was forced to squat, stand, and walk for long hours. She was not allowed to brush her teeth or wash herself. She was deprived of sleep and drinking water. Usually the only food she was given was a bag of instant noodles at night. Otherwise she was not given any food. However, the officials and thugs who tortured her ate at restaurants at every meal, squandering the taxpayers' money.
When Ms. Zhang became very weak and ill, she was taken to the Lianyungang City Detention Center.
At the detention center, she was interrogated again and threatened by the 610 Office officials. She was sentenced to two years of forced labor and within a month was taken to the Judong Women's Forced Labor Camp.
At the labor camp, Ms. Zhang was locked up in the third team, where Falun Gong practitioners were detained. She was forced to recite camp regulations every day. She was also coerced to write statements to slander Falun Gong. When she refused, she was made to stand and squat for long periods of time. She was also deprived of food and sleep.
Under the camp guards' instigation and urging, the inmates had no fear and did not hold back at all in their vicious abuse of practitioners.
Two young inmates were assigned to watch Ms. Zhang every day. They forced her to clean the toilet, wash their clothes, and undergo harsh military style drills, which included endless running and walking. She was also ordered to ask for permission before doing anything.
Ms. Zhang developed severe migraine headaches while imprisoned in the labor camp, so she wanted to do the exercises. As soon as she began, a group of five inmates started punching and kicking her, smothering her by choking her neck and covering her mouth until she fainted. During the attack, camp guard Zhang Jing stood by watching and did not stop it.
Near the end of her labor camp term, guard Lian Shaohua ordered inmates to force her again to give up her practice of Falun Gong. Ms. Zhang refused again, so one inmate violently slapped her face, poured water on her face and forced her to ingest an unknown drug for over a month. When Ms. Zhang refused to take the drug, she was deprived of sleep.
Other methods used by the Judong Women's Forced Labor Camp authorities to abuse Falun Gong practitioners included: arbitrary forced labor term extension, brainwashing, using inmates to constantly watch and record practitioners' speech and behavior, forbidding practitioners to buy daily necessities such as toilet paper, making them stand for long periods of time, dragging them across the ground, sleep deprivation, extended exposure under the scorching sun, exposure to freezing cold, forbidden restroom use, savage beatings, high voltage electrical shocking, tying up on the death bed, punitive force-feedings, forced ingestion of unknown drugs, slave labor, sexual assault and humiliation such as stripping off their clothes.
