Renowned Painter from Yunnan Province, Professor Liu Yong, Illegally Tried

January 25, 2013 |   By a Minghui correspondent from Yunnan Province, China

(Minghui.org) Mr. Liu Yong was born in 1972 in Changling City, Jinlin Province. After he began cultivating Falun Gong in 1994, all of his illnesses, including neurasthenia, severe insomnia, and a persistent cough, disappeared. He became a much kinder person who worked very hard and earned the trust and respect of his boss. In 2001, Mr. Liu and his wife, Ms. Liu Yan, moved to Kunming City, Yunnan Province, where he became a well-known painter and sculptor. He had previously worked for the Institute of Posts and Telecommunications of Changchun, Jilin University, and the Business School at the Teaching University of Yunnan.

Mr. Liu painted and embossed “Falun Dafa Is Good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance Is Good” on a wall on September 1, 2012. Officers from the Menglian Public Security Bureau arrested him for “Using a cult organization to undermine the enforcement of the law,” and he was held in Menglian Detention Center.

On December 17, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) tried Mr. Liu in the Menglian County court. This was the first trial of a Falun Gong practitioner in that county. During the trial, all seats were taken by Communist officials, who intended to send out a “message” to other practitioners.

The audience was surprised to see the upright Falun Gong practitioner, Mr. Liu, a distinguished and highly-educated university professor, appearing before the court. He was calm and smiled peacefully. Along with his lawyer from Beijing, Mr. Liu defended himself reasonably and sensibly, with a plea of not-guilty.

Mr. Liu said, “The police ransacked my house and took away my Dafa books, the Minghui Weekly, and the Zhengjian Weekly, which I downloaded from the Internet. I didn't harm anyone. How can these things be construed as 'incriminating evidence?' I went out to distribute truth-clarification CDs, which I made myself, and I didn't cheat anyone out of their money. These CDs are good for our society. You should play one of them in this courtroom and make a determination based on the content as to whether I should be considered guilty or not. If you don't play it, the presiding judge won't know if what it contains is good or bad. It would be ridiculous to charge me based on the number of the CDs you confiscated. I wrote 'Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance' on a wall. These words are good for all people in all countries. I didn't harm anyone or our country. I should therefore not be found guilty. What I handed out were truth-clarification materials. Whether they are true or not, I invite all of you to read them to find out. Why do you want to convict me without reading them?”

The trial lasted from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The spectators in the courtroom listened to Mr. Liu attentively. The presiding judge finally concluded the proceedings and said the verdict would be announced separately.

Mr. Liu was arrested on September 1, 2012. On September 3, Li Zhibing, Luo Yun, Wu Wenwu, and three other police officers (who refused to show their IDs) from Wuhua Public Security Bureau and Menglian Public Security Bureau barged into Mr. Liu's house in Kunming City and took his notebook computer, printer, CD burner, CDs, Falun Gong books, truth-clarification materials, etc. On the morning of September 5, Mr. Liu's wife, Ms. Liu Yan, also a professor, was harassed by officers from the Kunming Public Security Bureau. The officers went to her university and forced the university administrators to fire her. In order to escape persecution, Ms. Liu was forced to move from place to place for a month, disrupting her family. Many of their colleagues were outraged by the behavior of the police.

Because of their belief, the Liu family has suffered numerous tribulations due to the Chinese Communist Party's persecution of Falun Gong. The details of their persecution were documented and published in the article “Renowned Artist's Family Suffers Cruel Persecution in Yunnan Province.”
