Mr. Pang Guangwen from Shanghai on Hunger Strike for 17 Days to Protest Being Shackled and Tied to His Hospital Bed

July 11, 2012 |   By a Minghui correspondent from Shanghai

(Minghui.org) Mr. Pang Guangwen, a Falun Gong practitioner who was doing business in Shanghai, was arrested on April 27, 2012. He was locked up in the Changning District Detention Center. His feet and hands were shackled on May 14, 2012. He began a hunger strike on May 22, 2012. He was transferred to the prison hospital on May 27, 2012 where his hands and feet were tied to the hospital bed; he has no freedom of movement.

On the morning of June 4, 2012, Mr. Pang's lawyer rushed to the Procuratorate in Changning District to inquire about his case. The lawyer learned that his arrest had just been authorized. The Procuratorate was unwilling to reveal the name of the person in charge. The woman at the Procuratorate's office appeared very nervous. She asked why so many people had come. Actually, including the lawyer, there were only 4 people involved.

On May 14, 2012, Changning District Detention Center shackled Mr. Pang's hands and feet together, so that he had to bend his back. On May 22, 2012, he began a hunger strike to protest this treatment. They force-fed him for the first time on May 24, 2012. On May 27, 2012, he was transferred to Zhoupu Prison Hospital, where they continued to persecute him. They force-fed him 8 large bowls of liquid diet as well as 4 to 5 bottles of a brine mixture mixed with unknown drugs through an intravenous tube daily.

The lawyer asked what kind of drugs he was given. The doctor said they were to protect his stomach. Mr. Pang Guangwen was shackled to his hospital bed and had no freedom of movement. He wasn't able to attend to personal hygiene or shave. He was only able to bathe once from the time he entered the hospital on June 1, 2012. His appearance was slovenly.

The lawyer asked why he went on a hunger strike. Mr. Pang answered, “To protest the public security organ depriving me of my personal freedom. Falun Gong practitioners are often deprived of their personal liberty, and have even lost their lives. This is the only way I can protest this unfair treatment.”

As of June 7, 2012, Pang Guangwen had been on a hunger strike for 17 days. He had been forced to wear heavy shackles on his hands and feet since May 27, 2012.

Mr. Pang Guangwen, a resident of Shandong Province, was doing business in Sanzao Township in the Nanhui District, Shanghai City. He has a three-year-old daughter. Mr. Pang and another Falun Gong practitioner, Mr. Zhao Bin, were arrested on April 27, 2012 at around 8 p.m. by police officers from the Jiangsulu Police Station in the Changning District. After arresting him, they confiscated his computer, printer, and other things. They locked him up in the Qingchilu Detention Centre in Changning District.

Mr. Pang was unable to pick up his daughter from nursery school after he was arrested. His daughter had to stay with his feeble mother since his wife had no time to take care of her. His company is faced with bankruptcy because he was arrested.

We appeal to all the good people in the world to play close attention to Mr. Pang's condition and to support his lawful rights and interests.
