Mr. Li Haijun and His Wife Imprisoned

January 29, 2012 |   By a Clearwisdom correspondent from Hebei Province, China

(Clearwisdom.net) Mr. Li Haijun and his wife, Ms. Liu Huiping, from Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province, were arrested in Changde, Hunan Province in 2009. They were sentenced to prison by the Wuling District Court in 2011. Mr. Li was sentenced to eight and a half years, and is now being held in unit No. 6 of Jinshi Prison in Changde. Ms. Liu was sentenced to seven and a half years, and is currently being held in Changsha Women's Prison.

Mr. Li (42) from Gaojiaying village of Chongli County in Zhangjiakou was formerly an employee at the Community Supply Store in Chongli. He began practicing Falun Gong in 1996. Mr. Li went to Beijing in 2000 to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. He was later arrested by Zhang Guisuo and others from Chongli Police Department, and was detained at Chongli Detention Center. Officers Shi Jinjun, Zhang Guisuo and others from the local 610 Office extorted about 10,000 yuan from him a few weeks later.

In 2001, Mr. Li was arrested again and sent to Chongli Detention Center. While he was held there Shi Jinjun and Zhang Guisuo beat him. Mr. Li went on hunger strike to protest the persecution. During the hunger strike, he was sentenced to one year of forced labor at Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp in Baoding, Hebei. He was released in 2002, after one year of inhumane treatment and abuse at the labor camp. A few days after his release, Shi Jinjun, Zhang Guisuo and others from the 610 Office went to his home to threaten and harass him. They forced him to write a guarantee statement to stop practicing Falun Gong. After being threatened and harassed on numerous occasions, Mr. Li had to leave his home to avoid further persecution.

Officers from Chongli Police Department and Hunan Police Department arrested Mr. Li on August 5, 2008, while he was working as a laborer in Hunan. He was taken back to Zhangjiakou and was detained at Zhangjiakou Detention Center.

Mr. Li, Ms. Liu and over ten other practitioners were arrested by officers Huang Junhua, Wang Yongkang, Wu Xiyong and others from the Domestic Security Division of the Changde Police Department on the afternoon of December 16, 2009.

On the morning of June 11, 2010, Mr. Li, Ms. Liu, Ms. Wang Xiaohui, Ms. Ceng Lihua, Ms. Liu Xianju and other practitioners were put on trial by Wuling District Court in Changde. The practitioners' lawyer remained adamant that the practitioners were not guilty of any crime. The judges were infuriated by this comment and issued threats to any Falun Gong practitioners who say the words “Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.” Mr. Li said, “By practicing the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, I am being a conscientious member of society who abides by the law. I am also striving to be a kinder person with a higher moral standard. How can this be unlawful? How can this be a crime?” The judge became furious. She rushed over to Mr. Li and yanked on his handcuffs to stop him from speaking.

The practitioners were handed their prison sentences on November 4, 2010. Ms. Liu Xianju was sentenced to ten years in prison, Ms. Li Fangyun was sentenced to nine and a half years, Ms. Wang Xiaohui was sentenced to nine years, Mr. Li Haijun was sentenced to eight and a half years, Ms. Liu Huiping was sentenced to seven and a half years, Ms. Ceng Lihua was sentenced to seven years, Man Sanqing was sentenced five years, and Ms. Chen Lingci was sentenced to three years. The practitioners then attempted to appeal.

An appeals hearing was held at the court on March 30, 2011. During the hearing, Ms. Liu Xianju, an elderly lady, had a seizure and vomited. She pleaded with the court to allow her to go to the hospital. Eventually the court had Ms. Liu and another elderly practitioner, Ms. Li Fangyun, who was also not well, taken to the hospital. The hearing continued and the original decisions were upheld.

Wuling District Court opened the cases against Ms. Liu Xianju and Ms. Li Fangyun at the detention center on May 4, and again upheld the original sentences. Ms. Liu lost consciousness during the hearing, but the court refused to allow her to receive medical attention.

On the morning of June 27, officials at Wuling District Court handed the sentence papers from Changde City Court to Mr. Li Haijun, Ms. Liu Huiping, Ms. Wang Xiaohui and others. There were no court hearings, and the court upheld their original sentences. In addition, officials at the court illegally seized Mr. Li Haijun, Ms. Liu Huiping and Ms. Wang Xiaohui's appeal letters.

Mr. Li Haijun is currently being held in unit No. 6 of Jinshi Prison. His wife, Ms. Liu Huiping, is being held in Changsha Women's Prison.

Mr. Gu Zhihui is a 38-year-old practitioner from Linli County in Changde. In March of 2004 he was sentenced to three years in Cendan Prison in Hunan by Linli Court, where he was beaten and subjected to physical torture. He was later sent to Wuling Prison in Hunan and was released on March 22, 2007. Mr. Gu is currently serving an eight year term in Jinshi Prison.
