1-1-5. Using Mistreatment to Kill One's Spirit

For Falun Gong practitioners, completing the required work is a small matter.

It is agonizing however, when a prison guard wants the practitioner to write an article attacking Master, Dafa or oneself. Refusing to write it will bring on attacks, insults, and critiques, etc. When there is a desire to leave this hell-like place or to have the prison term reduced, then you are under their control. You have to continue attacking Master, Dafa, and yourself, and help the prison guards force other practitioners to give up Dafa. Furthermore, if you have family members practicing Dafa, you are forced to write to them about quitting, giving up their books and related materials, and singing praise to the prison guards.

Prison guards require people to write articles praising the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). They also want articles that praise themselves, and their work in trying to convert practitioners. Articles must include words such as "great, selfless, and dedication."

1-1-6. Using Recordings and Phone Calls to Brainwash People

Over the years, the Fifth Brigade of the Shanghai Women's Prison has been responsible for persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. The guards repeatedly and loudly play tapes in the prison rooms that are abusive to Dafa, in order to achieve the so-called "transformation." On June 7, 2007, Shi Lei, the commander of the Fifth Brigade, called Ms. Zeng Aihua's daughter, a Falun Gong practitioner, in Hong Kong and played a brainwashing recording.

1-2 Persecution in Other Squads

If a practitioner is able to withstand the persecution in the Fifth Brigade, she will be sent to other brigades.

In 2001, the second brigade devised a new torture--"wearing tight clothes" (also known as a contracting bag or contracting clothes) to harm practitioners. It was said to have come from Masanjia Forced Labor Camp. On the surface it seems that tight clothing is not as bad as handcuffs. In reality, it is very harmful to the body, because it disrupts the proper blood flow over the entire body, and affects breathing. It consists of a special garment made of thick canvas that is not flexible. Underneath the arms are rubber bands to make the outfit contract. If a practitioner is caught doing the exercises, she is put into such a garment. For 24 hours, she is forced into a fixed position with both arms tightly closed below the armpits, and hands in front of the chest. It is so tight that no movement is possible. Furthermore, the practitioner is not released even when she needs to use the bathroom.

1-3 Investigation Leads of Organ Removal from Living Falun Gong Practitioners

A lead to organ harvesting: It has been learned that blood tests were carried out many times at Shanghai Women's Prison. A practitioner who was imprisoned at the Shanghai Women's Prison for five years, along with another practitioner there, recalled some important incidents that could be of value to investigators.

2. Severe Persecution Cases

2-1 Ms. Xi Jiao and Ms. Li Huayan Suffer Mental Trauma as a Result of Torture

A healthy Xi Jiao

Xi Jiao after suffering a mental collapse

(1) Xi Jiao, 33, lived in Baogangjiu Village, Baoshan District, Shanghai. She was illegally arrested in July, 2001, when she was 24. She was first kept at Baoshan Detention Center for more than a year and was persecuted until she began suffering from spasms. In July 2002 she was illegally sentenced to four years and six months in prison and was transferred to Shanghai Women's Prison.

Not long after being transferred to Shanghai Women's Prison, she suffered mental depression and was sent to the prison hospital. After a month she was sent back to stay around criminals who were abusive. This terrible environment hurt her a lot and led to her mental collapse. In 2003 she was sent to the Baoshan District Mental Hospital. Prison officials didn't want her family to know about it and gave her another name, Xue Jiao. She was in that hospital for three months.

From 2007 to 2010 police officers never stop harassing and pressuring her. During this period she was sent to the mental hospital three more times.

This person, who wanted to practice Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, has been turned into a mental patient by evil people. Even though she suffered a mental collapse, the authorities continued to persecute her. She is not able to have a normal life and both her and her family members are under intense pressure mentally and financially.

(2) Dafa practitioner, Li Huayan, now in her thirties, was arrested and sent to the Shanghai Women's Prison in November 2005. She was put in solitary confinement for long periods of time. In May 2006, her hands were cuffed behind her back for a week. She was unable to think clearly after that, and acted erratically. The guards said that she was pretending to be mentally ill, and didn't send her to a hospital. They did not release her until her prison term was up in February 2008.
