Changwon, South Korea: Professor Deeply Moved by Shen Yun Show: 'It exquisitely presents forgotten traditional cultural values' (Photos)

February 26, 2010 |

(Clearwisdom.net) The first performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts in Changwon, Korea was greeted by a capacity audience who enthusiastically applauded the performance by the New York-based company on the afternoon of Feb. 23.

Professor Choi Ki Sung, President of the Institute for Peace Studies, was deeply touched and said, "Through this show, one is truly able to understand from one's heart the intentions of the creator. Shen Yun is a very valuable show to me."

Mr. Choi is currently a guest professor at Pusan National University and Changwon National University. He had originally planned a trip to Japan this week but postponed it one day so as not to miss the Shen Yun show.

Deeply Impressed by China's Traditional Culture and values

"Shen Yun enabled me to experience the splendor, unrestrained freedom, dignity and immensity of traditional Chinese culture. China is a big country with many ethnic groups interspersed and living together. I experienced the profundity of ancient Chinese values watching the dances and traditional costumes of several minority groups in China. I saw the primary driving force behind Chinese society, and all this is truly unique. It left a deep impression on me.

"Chinese culture encompasses compassion and respect for the heavens. Nowadays, people have lost so many of these values.

"Every story is perfectly portrayed in the limited time frame given through music and dance. Many levels of important messages are also transmitted through these stories.

"My favorite item is the opening program The Emperor Ushers in a Glorious Age. It shows the development of the human world from the heavens.

"Many of us today have already forgotten what heaven looks like. That scene is something modern science and civilization is unable to replicate. It is very touching to have this as the opening part of the show. I am very grateful to have seen Shen Yun."

Mr. Choi was greatly touched by the program Splitting the Mountain. He felt that it was very poignant. "In today's society, where people think only of themselves, the story made me understand indirectly some kind of power that exists beyond the material world. The mysterious workings of God are inconceivable."

"Through the performance, I feel that if indeed there is a creator of this universe, then there must exist realms where Gods reside, as well as the secular world that we live in today. The heavens and secular world are perfectly manifested in today's show."

Mr. Choi said: "With the progress of science, much of man's original nature has been lost. In the course of watching Shen Yun shows, people can truly understand in their hearts, the intentions of the creator. Once again I have a deeper awareness towards respect and reverence for heaven as well as why humans should be compassionate towards one another."

"Shen Yun shows depict China's traditional culture, which transcends religious differences. It exquisitely and discreetly presents forgotten traditional cultural values using stories from historical classics up to modern day social phenomena.

"Music and dance flowed naturally and everything was arranged appropriately in today's show. The whole event was harmoniously coordinated, it was spectacular. I am infinitely gratified to have the opportunity to watch this show."

Ballet School Director Describes Shen Yun As 'Amazing'

Ms Kim Hyun Jung is currently director of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy.

A former professional dance choreographer: "I am very fortunate to see such a great show in Changwon."

Former ballet school director Ms. Kim said: "The word 'amazing' came to my mind. The backdrops were exquisite, the expressions of the dancers were vivid, the movements were very beautiful, the costumes were gorgeous."

China and Korea have a long history together, "I discovered that this group of people are promoting Chinese culture. It is a great opportunity to spread Chinese culture. This is fantastic! Thank you very much! I feel so blessed to see this show today." Said Ms. Kim.

Ms. Kim took note of the crowded Auditorium "To my knowledge, all the tickets for today's show were sold out. Indeed, it was hard to get hold of a ticket! You will not regret seeing the show. It is the best choice. I whole heartedly recommend others to watch the show."

Famous Korean Dancer: "All the works were immaculate"

Ms. Jeong Yang Ja is a famous Korean dancer and also the chairman of the Masan Dance Association. "All the works were immaculate, the dancers were well trained, the costumes, dance, music, everything blended together in perfect synchrony." Said Ms. Jeong. To her trained eye, she saw only perfection in Shen Yun's revival of true Chinese dance and culture.

Ms. Jeong continued to compliment Shen Yun's performance. "I am so fortunate to see such a splendid show in Korea. It is as if I am watching the history of China. From the dance gestures today, I saw the implied meaning of Chinese history and I am deeply touched." she said.

Ms. Jeong believed Shen Yun is beneficial to people and hopes more people will witness its beauty. "Everyone should come and see such a show. It will broaden our perspectives. I heard that Shen Yun will also put on shows in Daegu. It is not far from here. I must spread the word so that more will come to see the show and share the same joy that I have experienced."

Renowned Korean Painter: "very wonderful."

Veteran Korean painter Mr. Jang Young Joon is the adviser to the Korean Professional Artists Association and the Korea Art Association. He has sat on the review board for many important arts events, such as the Korean International Culture and Art Exhibition, for successive years and won many awards. His artistic ability allowed him to experience the depth of Shen Yun's spectacular show.

"As a painter, I often visualize things and have learned many things too. I felt many things from the show." said Mr. Jang. He also felt very inspired by the scenes he witnessed and told reporters "From now on, I should draw scenes like those depicted in the show."

When asked about the music of the show, Mr. Jang felt that his soul was stirred by the music. "[the music has] gone beyond individual emotions to present one's innermost feelings from its fundamental source."

He said his favorite piece of music was Ms. Xiaochun Qi's erhusolo rendition of Saving the Predestined. "The sound makes me reflect on the path I have taken in this life and also makes one have the desire to find out what it is like in the future world."

Mr. Jang went on to expound upon the spiritual feelings Shen Yun had stirred inside of him. "I can understand that world. Recently, the infiltration of Western culture has made people more materialistic and superficial. This makes it hard for them to see that world."

He also found the ancient beliefs in god's and right and wrong to harmonize with his soul."One's physical body can be destroyed but the soul is eternal. It means that one is only in the cycle of reincarnation. According to Buddhist teachings, a life has reincarnated into this human world because of accumulation of karma. Although it is said to be fortunate that one has reincarnated into a human being, however, there is also the possibility that one may become an animal in the next life. A life can be reincarnated into many different forms. Thus one should not commit bad deeds in this life and should sincerely believe in Buddha."

After sharing so much about how Shen Yun's performance had affected him, he expressed his deepest gratitude. "I am truly grateful. Today has been a most pleasant experience. It is really a great pity that Shen Yun is staying in Changwon for today only. If they had another show tomorrow, I would like to call home and recommend more to come and watch it."
