610 Office in Yitong County, Jilin Province Prevents Ms. Du Liming's Attorneys from Providing a Defense

October 03, 2010 |   By a Clearwisdom correspondent from Jilin Province

(Clearwisdom.net) In order to prevent two lawyers from defending Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Du Liming, the Yitong County 610 Office instructed police officers to hold the defense attorneys in their hotel rooms and confiscate their cell phones. On the hearing date of September 10, 2010, three plainclothes police officers took the two lawyers to Changchun City, bought train tickets for them, and forced them to go back to Beijing.

Ms. Du Liming, 46 years old, used to be disabled and was bedridden for seven years. In 1997, after she started to practice Falun Gong, her health greatly improved, and she was able take care of herself. However, over the past few years of persecution, police officers have come to harass her, ransack her home, and they have tried to arrest her several times. Her family members have also been verbally abused by the police.

On July 11, 2010, when Ms. Du was distributing Shen Yun DVDs on the street in Yidan Town, Yitong County, she was illegally arrested by Wang Yingchao (from the Yitong Domestic Security Division) and other police officers. She was taken to the detention center in Yitong County. Her child, who happens to be mentally challenged and requires significant attention, has gone missing ever since.

After Ms. Du's arrest, her family hired attorneys Wang Yajun and Han Zhiguang to defend her. On September 9, 2010, after the two lawyers arrived in Yitong County, they submitted the required paperwork to the Yitong County Court in order to attend the hearing against Ms. Du.

On the afternoon of September 9, 2010 Cui Limin, the head of the Political and Judiciary Committee, took two plainclothes police officers and found the lawyers. They claimed that attorneys from other counties were not allowed to read the case documents, meet with their clients, or attend the hearing and present a defense for this type of case. Around 7:00 p.m., the two plainclothes police officers, Liu and Zhang, instructed the attorneys that they couldn't attend the hearing. The officers also confiscated the attorneys' cell phones and held them in their hotel room. Around 6:00 a.m. on September 10, three officers knocked on the attorneys' door to wake them up. After they were refused entry twice, the officers broke into the room at around 7:00 a.m., escorted the attorneys to Changchun, and bought tickets for them to send them back to Beijing. After strong requests from the lawyers, the officers returned the cell phones to them after they entered the train station.

On September 10, 2010, as instructed by the 610 Office, the Yitong County Court held a hearing against Ms. Du.

Later, 610 Office personnel intimidated Ms. Du's family, demanding that they not ask the lawyers to continue defending her case.

Ms. Du was persecuted in years past. On the morning of October 9, 2006, police station head Tian, Liang Xiqian (from the subdistrict office), Wang Jiaxian, Song Chunlan, Zhu Yanli, Nan Fengqin, and Kong (from the Residential Committee) came to Ms. Du's house to harass her. Ms. Du wasn't at home at the time, so they harassed her husband instead. On the morning of July 25, 2007, Zhou Hongde, the head of the Fengman Street Police Station, and Liang Xiqian came to Ms. Du's house and confiscated two photos of Falun Gong's founder Master Li and two Falun emblems. On March 14, 2008, Zhou Hongde and three other officers broke into Ms. Du's house and arrested her. Her left arm was badly injured during the arrest.
