Ms. He Xianggu Barred from Work at Hunan Province Women's and Children's Health Institute

May 04, 2009 |   By a practitioner in Mainland China

(Clearwisdom.net) In 2008, officials at the Hunan Province Women's and Children's Health Institute sent Falun Gong practitioner Ms. He Xianggu, a 47-year-old nurse, to a psychiatric hospital for persecution. Pressure from overseas forced the Institute to release her. However, the Institute officials began to persecute Ms. He financially. She was barred from her place of employment. At the same time, her personal savings were withdrawn from her bank, leaving her penniless. Ms. He, an experienced nurse, had to find temporary jobs to make a living. Even under this circumstance, the Institute officials continued to harass her in an effort to force her to renounce Falun Gong.

Physical Torture

On April 23, 2008, officers from the Wujialing Police Station in Changsha City broke into Ms. He's home and arrested her because she practiced Falun Gong. Later, she was sentenced to forced labor and sent to the Baimalong Forced Labor Camp in Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province.

On July 10, 2008, officials of the Baimalong Forced Labor Camp notified Ms He's employer, the Hunan Province Women's and Children's Health Institute, of her medical parole. She was on the verge of death due to the torture she suffered in the labor camp. However, that very night, Institute officials sent her to the Hunan Province Brain Hospital (the former Hunan Province Psychiatric Hospital). On October 10, 2008, medical staff injected Ms. He with a nerve-damaging drug. When this incident was exposed overseas, people around world criticized the action and brought attention to the persecution of He Xianggu.

On October 28, 2008, due to pressure from overseas and from the demands of Ms. He's family, the institute officials finally agreed to release her from the hospital. After being detained for 101 days, Ms. He regained her freedom.

Deprivation of Work

In the middle of November, 2008, Ms. He regained her health and returned to Changsha City from her hometown in You County, hoping to go back to work. However, when she tried to talk to the Party Secretary, Zhang Hui, and the chief of Party Committee Office, Hu Hui, as well as the director of the Institute, Zeng Chunlin, none of them would help her to regain her former position.

In February of 2009, Ms. He once again went to talk to Hu Hui, and asked to have her job back. Hu agreed to let her work under the condition that she would write a guarantee letter that she was not now, and would not longer be involved with any Falun Gong activities. Since Ms. He refused to accept the conditions, she was unable to return to work.

Financial Persecution

The institute officials not only deprived Ms. He of work, but also persecuted her financially.

In November of 2008, when Ms. He returned to Changsha City, she went to her bank to withdraw some money. She found that all of her savings, totaling over 10,000 yuan, was gone and nothing was left in her account. She checked with the bank and was informed that officials from her workplace issued a letter to the bank and withdrew all of her money on October 13, 2008. This took place right after she was injected with the nerve-damaging drugs.

The institute officials had been persecuting Ms. He financially for a long time. In December of 2006, when she was released from detention, she was to work in the operating room; however not as a formal employee. She earned half of the bonus each month while other nurses received about 2,000 yuan per month. Although Ms. He was paid less, she still worked diligently.

The officials from her workplace spent a lot of money to persecute He Xianggu. During the time she was detained at the psychiatric facility, they paid about 50,000 yuan for her detention there.

Harassing Relatives

Besides persecuting Ms. He directly, the institute officials also harassed her relatives and disturbed their daily life.

On October 28, 2008, the day Ms. He was released, the institute officials forced her brother to sign a warranty letter as part of the condition for her release. The letter indicated that her brother would take on the responsibility of monitoring Ms. He. Under pressure, her husband was forced to divorce her. Ms. He was not allowed to purchase a computer, printer, or distribute Falun Gong materials. If she was arrested again, she would be fired. Although her brother knew that Falun Gong was good and that Ms. He has the right to freedom of belief, he still signed the letter against his conscience.

Ms. He had to find temporary jobs to make a living. The officials from her workplace constantly called her relatives to harass them. The officials from the Hunan Province 610 Office drove to her hometown in You County, to ask for her phone number. The harassment and disturbances over the years has brought a lot of anguish to her relatives.

Under pressure from the top institute officials, Ms. He Xianggu's colleagues - doctors and nurses who work at the Hunan Province Women's and Children's Health Institute - did not dare show their sympathy to Ms. He, although they knew the truth of her persecution. However, there were also many people who did not know the truth and believed the lies from the officials and Chinese Communist Party, and mistakingly thought that Ms. He was responsible for her situation.
