WASHINGTON--Mr. Hiller, a reporter and producer for a local public radio station, was part of an impressed audience who attended the Divine Performing Arts (DPA) show at the Kennedy Center in Washington on Friday.

"It is always exciting when you see something like this. You know it is good when they make the difficult look possible and even easy," he said.

In his work in the radio station, Mr. Hiller primarily focuses on culture, health, and some arts, he said, and was accordingly interested in similar facets of the DPA show.

He liked the physicality of the traditional Chinese dance depicted in the show and was taken with "the illusions with the fans" in the piece, Welcoming Spring.

The elongated sleeves in Flowing Sleeves were "wonderful," he said, but he was especially impressed with the technical aspects of the show--"the stills, the graphics, the backdrops."

Mr. Hiller also noted the unusual blending of Eastern and Western influences in the music. The DPA orchestra breaks new ground by combining both Chinese and Western instruments, thereby bringing together two of the world's great classical music traditions.

"I don't think I have heard a lot of it before," he said. "I think the blending of the music works very well. The erhu, it is amazing; the power that is generated by that instrument!"

The erhu is a two-stringed Chinese instrument, known for its mellow, haunting sound and wide range of notes.

Mr. Hiller said the stories depicted in the show, many of which portray traditional Chinese myths, were easy to understand and he commended the caliber of the performers.

"The expressive ability of a number of the performers was very good," he said.
