Du Guocong Tortured by 30 Criminals Over the Last Three Years at Daqing Forced Labor Camp

April 09, 2005 |

(Clearwisdon.net) In March 2002, Falun Dafa practitioner Mr. Du Guocong from Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province was detained and sent to the Daqing Forced Labor Camp. During his detention, the guards inhumanly tortured him.

Upon his arrival at the camp, he was forced to take off his clothes for a so-called security check and then sent to a solitary compartment (1), where he was confined for one month. During that time he was watched by four criminals and not allowed to step outside the compartment to totally curtail any contact with others.

In May 2002, Du Guocong was escorted to the No. 1 Division for what was called "strict control." He was forced to do very heavy manual labor. Mr. Du Guocong was beaten several times a day by a group of criminals by order of Wang Yongxiang, Deputy Director of the camp and Wang Yingzhou, Deputy Head of the Division. Mr. Du lost consciousness many times as a result of the severe beatings. However, even after he lost consciousness he was propped up so he could be kicked and punched by the criminal inmates. Wang Yingzhou asked the head of the clinic to give Mr. Du an analgesic drug four times in four days. Mr. Du was force-fed painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication many times. Even the guards and criminals who still had a sense of justice could not bear to see this happen, and there was widespread grumbling amongst themselves. They said that people could be killed by that kind of torture. However, criminals Zhao Jinfa, Li Chunfa, Fei Qingwei, and some others followed the orders of Wang Yongxiang and Wang Yingzhou. They hit Mr. Du Guocong's body as if it were a punching bag.

When the criminals were told to beat Mr. Du, they would usually use a restroom, water supply room, small cell, or the on-duty guard's room to carry out the orders. The torture methods and implements used include punching and kicking, elbowing, hitting with a wood plank, hitting with a 2-meter-long, 6-mm-wide rubber tube, force-feeding of urine and feces, and dousing with cold water. The torturing would last for one to four or five hours. After the torturing Mr. Du was too incapacitated to participate in the drills or to work. The criminals would hold him up and force him to take part in the drills and do manual labor. One day, 6 to 7 criminals were torturing Mr. Du Guocong in the water supply room. Just as Mr. Du was about to shout for help, he was choked by several of the inmates. Criminal Li Chunlong placed a plank on Mr. Du's neck, which several criminals pressed on until Mr. Du's neck was severely swollen. Eventually he lost consciousness. When he came to, he could not speak for two weeks and had difficulty swallowing.

Criminal Fei Qingwei was the most ruthless. He would always hit Mr. Du in the abdomen. Sometimes he would put a cushion on the part he was going to hit. It was said that this was the invention of the guards. Even though the victim was internally injured, you could not see any wounds externally. During his term of forced labor Fei Qingwei did not mend his bad habits. He was discovered stealing money from the guards and was crippled by the beating he received. When Mr. Du Guocong took care of Fei, Mr. Du asked Fei why he was mistreating him so viciously. Fei said that Wang Yongxiang and Wang Yingzhou promised to reduce his sentence if he participated in the beatings. Then Mr. Du asked Fei if he was afraid of karmic retribution. Fei said, "I am not afraid. I would rather become a dog and eat excrement in my next life! In order to reduce my prison term I have to beat you!"

In the five months between October 2002 and March 2003, dozens of Falun Gong practitioners held at the No. 1 and No. 2 divisions were brutally tortured. Mr. Du was locked in a solitary compartment. Every day he was forced to sit on a stool that was approximately 20 cm [6 in.] high for 20 hours a day. He was made to endure this for two weeks. During that time, four criminals would monitor him. Mr. Du was only allowed to rest from 12 midnight to 3 a.m. and then he was forced to get up and sit on the stool again. Four criminals, on two shifts, watched him around the clock. The personal monitors (2) would beat Mr. Du several times a day.

The four criminals that monitored Mr. Du were Zhao Jinfa, Zhang Tie, Lang Yuzhu, and Zhao Junmin. One day they put a plastic bag over his head and tied it at his neck with rope. Then the four of them lit several cigarettes each and took turns blowing the smoke into the plastic bag through a thin plastic tube.

The criminals stripped Mr. Du naked and tied him to a Tiger Bench. Then they handcuffed him and doused him with cold water. October in Northeast China is very cold. However, the guards instructed the criminals to open all the windows and doors and used a homemade sprayer to constantly spray Mr. Du with water. Several criminals used plywood to fan the air to cool him that much faster. They also inserted a square stick into Mr. Du's mouth and tied him up so that he could not shout for help. Some criminals beat Mr. Du with rectangular boards. At night, the criminals still felt cold after putting on cotton-padded shirts and trousers. The torture and severe beating lasted for 16 hours (from 8 pm till 12 noon the following day).

The Deputy Head of the Division Wang Yingzhou asked 4 personal monitors to drag Mr. Du to the water supply room and hose him for over an hour. The lawless official also told the criminals to use a shoe brush on Mr. Du's back while hosing him with the cold water. The sharp, unbearable pain and numbing cold made Mr. Du lose consciousness. Only then did the criminals stop the torture.

Those who were chosen as personal monitors most often were the criminals that had been previously sentenced, served time in forced labor several times, or been imprisoned. They tortured the practitioners using the same torture methods guards had used on them. Mr. Du Guocong used to ask his personal monitors who had instructed them to do such terrible things. They replied that the instructions were from guards Wang Yongxiang, Lai Zhonghui, Wang Yingzhou, and others. They said that they would only torture people when they were ordered to do so. At that time, even if they tortured someone to death, the deputy head of the division would take full responsibility.

In October 2002, criminal Zhao Jinfa and others stripped Mr. Du Guocong naked, forced him to squat down and then kicked his testes until they were swollen and blackened. As a result Mr. Du had difficulty urinating for two weeks.

Between October and December 2002, Mr. Du Guocong was locked up in a solitary compartment. He was not given enough to eat. Each meal consisted of half a steamed bun and a few mouthfuls of soup.

One day in November 2002, guard Li Haitao incited personal monitors to strip Mr. Du Gucong naked in the name of conducting a so-called security check-up, but actually the perpetrators used a 6 mm thick rubber tube to whip Mr. Du. He was knocked to the ground several times. Each time he would be punched and kicked. They kicked Mr. Du in the nose with their leather shoes, which caused heavy bleeding. He was quickly covered with blood and there was blood on the floor. Guard Li Haitao stopped the torture and said to Mr. Du angrily, "Why did you write a letter to me? Why did you provide evidence accusing me of beating Falun Gong practitioners and of enjoying using violence?" Then Li Haitao called in 4 more personal monitors to drag Mr. Du into the water supply room downstairs, where they beat him with their fists, feet, elbows, and a long, thick piece of wood for more than two hours.

One day in early November 2002, Wang Yingzhou called Mr. Du Guocong into his office. As soon as Mr. Du entered the office, the door was shut and he was beaten. He was punched and kicked for an hour, and Mr. Du was knocked to the ground many times. The beating continued as soon as he was pulled up and leaned against the wall. Wang Yingzhou only stopped when he was too tired to continue. Mr. Du Guocong asked him, "Why do you treat me like this, since I don't have any hatred for you?" Wang Yingzhou said, "Why did you write me a letter of advice? Why did you write letters accusing me of beating Falun Gong practitioners? I will beat you as long as you are a Falun Gong practitioner. Go ahead and sue me! If you want to sue me, you'd better do it when you get out of here because it's no use for you to sue me while you are here. Don't you know this place is a dictatorship?" "You are the one I want to persecute!" "I don't want to see you being comfortable!"

The No. 1 Division of the Daqing Forced Labor Camp received a Group Merit Citation Class II from the Daqing Justice Bureau for its persecution of at least ten Falun Dafa practitioners. This is evidence of one of the many crimes committed by the Daqing Forced Labor Camp staff.

In mid-November 2002, Wang Yingzhou again called Mr. Du Guocong into his office. Upon entering the office, he was punched and kicked. Wang Yingzhou verbally abused him while beating him. After the beatings, Wang Yingzhou would tell the criminals to give Mr. Du painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication. If Mr. Du refused to take the drugs, Wang would take pliers and screwdrivers from his locker and use them to force open Mr. Du's mouth.

One day in late November, Wang Yingzhou called Mr. Du to his office again and used the same old tricks to torture him for more than an hour, and then told criminals to take Mr. Du to the water supply room, where they stripped Mr. Du naked and poured cold water all over him. Eventually, Mr. Du was destroyed both physically and mentally. He constantly felt dizzy, could not see clearly, fell into a trance, suffered from memory loss, and vomited.

One day in November 2002, due to the long period of torture and persecution while in the No. 1 Division, Mr. Du asked to be taken to a hospital for a check up. Guard Wang Yingzhou refused his request. Instead, he told criminals Zhang Tie and Lang Yuzhu to strip off all Mr. Du's clothes and then parade him in front of 40 criminals. Wang Yingzhou said, "Who can certify that Du Guocong is injured? It would be correct, though, for you to say that he has internal injuries throughout his body." Criminal Zhao Jinfa said, "It's all right to beat him to death. I can reduce my sentence by 20 days if I can force him to renounce Falun Dafa. Even if I truly beat him to death, I have the support of the Deputy Director of the camp Wang Yongxiang and Deputy Head of the Division Wang Yingzhou." Zhao Jinfa also said, "Wang Yingzhou said he would back them up if they should torture someone to death. Wang said there is a legal quota for the number of deaths at the camp.

Because Mr. Du Guocong was tortured for a long period of time, he collapsed one evening in July 2003. He vomited half a basin of blood and was sent to the Daqing People's Hospital for emergency treatment. After checking him over, the physician requested that he be hospitalized. However, because the camp staff doesn't care about the lives of Falun Gong practitioners, Mr. Du was taken back to the camp. As a result of the hard labor and torture he experienced over the past years, Mr. Du's blood pressure was very low -- 50/80 to 60/90. His eyesight was very poor, he often felt dizzy, he was anemic, frequently vomited, and was extremely underweight.

During the three years of forced labor, Mr. Du was not allowed to make a single phone call or see his family. He was beaten by at least 30 prison guards and criminals in the forced labor camp.

Notes:

1. "Being confined in a solitary compartment" refers to locking up a single detainee in a small cell, which contains a basin and a pair of handcuffs. The basin is used both for face washing and as a toilet. One end of the handcuffs is attached to the door railing and the other end to the confinee's wrist. The handcuffs can be fastened to the door railing at three different heights. In the highest position, the detainee has to extend his/her arm above the head. The middle position is at waist level. At the lowest position, the detainee must sit on the ground.

2. Personal Monitors: People designated to supervise the behavior of practitioners.
